Vice Captain away at Yeovil with full Team

Today, we played a friendly away at Yeovil. The weather was good and the course was in good condition.

The result was a 3-3 draw.

Hunt & Shelley won 2&1

Pedro & Chance won 2&1

Cording & Lauchlan lost 2&1

Gingell & Davis won 5&3

Overall aggregate for home & away is 8 &4 to CST.

With all Greens covered in sand and playing Temporary, Chris G switched Medalford to 3-ball scramble - which proved a great idea as some of the temporaries were as long as the 2nd cut - but of course that played into the hands of Mr England who can put over volcanic  pumice on a good day.

Very competitive round with it being down to a single missed put in the end.

As we left Mr Sweet and his Trio were looking good for the win with a Nett 55 - but await Chris G return from Yeovil.

Farmer Bob and Mrs Barrow still recovering from another bout of Covid  over in Axminster.

Here's an interesting one for you...
Terry picked up a Callaway ball today and put it into the little 'tray' on his golf buggy - but the drawer would not close. He swaped it for his usual ball and it closed fine. He tossed it to me and said "someone is playing with an illegal ball"

See Picture  - it was a Callaway Magna - checked out on Internet and it is indeed oversized, but apparently still LEGAL.    Any comments of explanations ?                                                                                             Regarding the oversized ball mentioned on the blog... see the following, after a discussion with my dad:

The rules only give a MINIMUM size of 1.68”.  So, in theory, you could have a football sized ball.  However, holing out would become difficult!  Also, as size goes up, drag increases, so the ball slows down quicker and you lose distance.  At 1.73” diameter, the Callaway Magna is 3% wider than the standard 1.68” ball, but drag is actually related to the area of the ball facing the air, which is 6% more for the large ball.  This doesn’t seem much but results in 10-15 yards loss of distance for a good drive.  The same effect was found in the 1960s when comparing the American 1.68” ball with the British 1.62” ball.

However, the larger ball raises the middle of the ball higher off the ground (by about 0.03”) which, it is claimed, makes it easier for high handicap players to get ‘under the ball’ and make better contact.

The other ball rule is that there is a MAXIMUM weight of 1.62oz.  So your football sized ball would be more like a balloon, and you wouldn’t hit that far with your driver!

(PS  Not my own work!)

County Stableford at Bath

Must have been a pretty miserable day as even the winning Team only had scores of 36, 34, 33 and 26 ..normally you would need four scores in the 40's. Well done for such a huge entry and you sure didn't miss much as a wet and foggy CST. Congrats to our Vice Captain for picking up some silverware.

Nice to see nonagenarian  Geoff Dean up there playing yesterday - setting a fine example that when you join us at age 55 - you have another 40 years to perfect your skills. Geoff did admit to being All fingers and fumbs' these days.  Also saw Iris and John Willard on my trip with Eric, David, Clive & Captain to put up all the Signs, banners Gazebos etc for today. Wow - never seen so many prizes on offer and David Walgrove seems to have mugged every shop in Ilminster for Sponsorship. Once again we will owe a huge Thank You to our Ladies for their support in all these functions.  Iris told me there are pictures of Donna at the Solheim Cup Venue alongside some of the Golfing Superstars  on the Ladies Blog pages... Latest forecast shows Storm Agnes missing CST by 47 Feet today, so Captain is confident the 'Fairy Cakes' will be fine.  Every pound you drop into those Cake collection Tins will buy fuel for those choppers...

Axe Cliff v CST
Thursday 21st September 2023

A biblical downpour greeted our team as we arrived for our friendly against an Axe Cliff team seeking revenge for a 5-1 thumping at CST last month.
All credit to their greenstaff for clearing all the greens of standing water in record time to allow the match to go ahead.
Big Jim L parred the 18th to win the opening match 1 up.
Mark C & John B got a hammering from a couple of bandits 6&4
Ian T & James S couldn’t pull back an early deficit losing 2 down
Roger W & Dave A had a hard fought half.
Chris G & Derek G had a great game eventually winning 2 up.
With the match finally balanced at 2 1/2 to 2 1/2 we eagerly awaited the final pairing of Dave M & Stuart P, and we waited, and waited, and waited.  But with Stuart turning on the after burners on the back nine, they ran out winners 2 up, thus securing a 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 win for CST.
Well done guys.

Digger working on foundations and clearance for relocation of  Maintenance Facilities. Just saying, but with old 1st fairway now overgrown and unlikely to return, why not just move Facility 50 Yards East which would be a lot more secure, easier to power and still enable buggy storage near Clubhouse   ?
