Captain's Charity - Age UK ( Somerset)
AGM - Observations - personal from JKP only
- Tea & Coffee - excellent
- Biscuits would have been nice ( I will donate)
- Layout - Poor
- Do not have Committee Table 37 Yards down the end, please centralise - half of attendees are deaf.
- Stop Jolly Roger photo-bombing every picture
- Control of Meeting - stick to Agenda- Good
As a personal observation, felt we as a group had forgotten who we are and attempts & proposals were tabled to alienate older / infirm members - despite having given up to 50 years service to The Club.
EG - Proposal to not allow buggy sharing as they keep getting drawn together - we have members that do not attend now as buggies are too expensive to hire alone and they are often not available.
Preventing winning of Trophies unless you attend regularly at roll up - luckily I think that was watered down at the end - They have paid their £10 and done much service to Seniors in their prime - they have formed their own groups as they do not want to play so much competitive golf and get sworn at by the younger more vocal ones.
There is plenty of Competitive Golf available in Club Competitions, and prestigious events such as Avalon/ Knighton Heath/ Challenge Cup/ County Seniors/ Somerset Bowl. It was the Club that insisted we lower age to 55 - but we must retain our respect for those up to 40 years older and not make Roll-Up so "Life & Death." - but gladly Chris G keeps a good balance.
|
You are Knocked out you bastard - you only showed up for 3 Roll-Ups |
AGM Response from a former Captain
As I was unable to attend the
AGM much of the content of the day has come to me second hand. As a very early
morning player I was disappointed to hear that we as a group are going to
penalised as we don't play with the main group. All of the players who tee off
before 8am are members of the Seniors Section of the Golf Club and have paid
their membership fee for those who are under 80, the remainder are exempt and
the club acknowledges this as we now are categorised as Veterans. Many of
us have served the club and the seniors section, I've no idea how many years it
all adds up too but it is significant. We have a Club Secretary a Seniors
Secretary and a Seniors Fixtures Secretary. We have 5 former Vice-Captains and
Captains and 3 who organised charity and open competitions.
Perhaps many of you don't
know why we chose to play at these ridiculous hours. Many of us have
commitments with our wives/partners who require hospital appointments, younger
family members who require transport and other requests that we are able to
help with. Starting at sunrise gives us a chance to not only enjoy playing golf
with our friends but also completing other tasks during the day however,
committing to play regularly in competitions is very difficult. We do have 3
away days a year and try to do regular qualifiers and our cards are kept . We seldom when playing hold up those behind us.
There are few competitions
that we would wish to and are eligible to compete in; these include Memorial
trophy, Past Captains trophy and Super Seniors Cup.
We are comfortable to be a
self contained group. However, I'm saddened to find us being relegated to the
has-been group. I am unable to find a good reason for this; could it be that we
cheat or disregard competition rules. Clearly, if you serve your club it
counts as nothing as one gets older. I would ask to the committee to reconsider
this decision; a written response would be appreciated.
By the way, EGGS translates
to Elderly Gentlemen's Golf Society with the emphasis on GENTLEMEN.
Alan Davis.

A debate ensued to change the format to stop High Handicappers winning this Comp, by changing to Medal Stroke-Play so every shot counted and a couple of other devious methods.
A stirring speech from Clubman of the Year proposed that we stick to the rules and spirit of Golf - saying if that was the genuine handicap then that is how it should be played on the day. The Chairman, Mark Cording quickly realised this proposal was going nowhere and did not need to put it to a vote.

Personally chosen by Captain
But so many others thanked by Captain for contributions during the year:-
Dickie Hall; Clive Fisk; Barrie Heath; Dave Mugridge; Match Captains; Mark Cording; Keith Branchmanager; Ian Thomas; Norman Markby ; Chris Gingell and a few more.
New Captain - Andy Rowland was on his feet and outlined the year ahead.
He was delighted to reveal his Vice Captain as Keith Hunt.
Thanks to all of you that were able to attend and who contributed to some very lively debates.
One Match Captain asked if they could be allowed to place reports directly onto This BLOG.
The answer is 'Yes' - but The Blog is a delicate beast and can easily be messed up by deleting in the wrong area or being in the least bit 'bold' . We lost it 3 Years ago and Adrian had to ressurrect it for us. It would be great if we had an expert Google Blogger in our Midst - but until someone stands up and takes ownership, we have to play it carefully. Several people have access, but we are always nervous about adding others.
Seniors Fixture Card will be available shortly, Barrie is still awaiting final dates. This Year will be trimmer as Monthly Qualifiers will only be on Chris's 'Golfing Program' page and not on the Fixture Card to have less clutter and allow more flexibility when other factors cause us to adjust dates.
Until Secretary Ian publishes the AGM Official Minutes.

4 Captains Report
Pete opened by remarking
*where did the year go* and said it had been an honour and privilege to
represent the section. Although he had been counting the time down he was going
to miss it. Things like George saluting him every morning was PRICELESS.
He was conscious he had
less hassle than the previous Captains with improved club management and chef.
His job had been made much easier by back up support of the committee and other
members.
His year didn’t start
well with the Capt drive in down the A30. Then the interclub matches got off to
a poor start losing 6 of the first 7. However the year finished with 12 wins
and 15 losses, many very close. He thanked James for stepping in when Ian had
to forgo the vice captaincy. James had been very helpful and was sure he would
do a fine job as captain wishing him every success for the coming year.
The unprecedented sum
of £7500 had been raised for Guide Dogs for the Blind largely to the generosity
of the group. Three people stand out as fund raisers:
Dickie Hall for his
monthly draw and Pie/Fish and chip nights.
Stuart Pope for the
Charity Open working hard cultivating friends and connections to generate
donations.
Nobby who raised £1000
for his haircut.
As a result of the
donation we can name 2 dogs with one being presented to us after 10 months of
training. Sensible suggestions were requested.
Pete was looking
forward to reducing his handicap which had risen from 17 to 22 during his
captaincy.
Finally he thanked
everyone again for their support stating he had enjoyed his year and hoped he
had done a half decent job.
5
Financial Statement
Keith presented the
financial statement (copy attached) going through many items in detail.
We currently have 148
members of which 14 are exempt and 20 new members joined during the year.
The total money paid
into the pro shop for the Roll ups amounted to £7800 all of which is allocated
back to the winners of the competitions.
6
Clubman of the Year
Pete had a new trophy
and decided to award it to who he considered to be most deserving as Clubman of
the Year.
He considered Bob for
all his work in organising some roll ups, staying to scrutinise the cards and
working tirelessly to complete the open results.
He also considered
Keith for the management of the money, allocating winnings/banking/keeping the
accounts all with good humour.
Finally the trophy was
awarded to John Pearce for his terrific sense of humour handling the
blog/taking photos/attending every function and always taking an active roll.
He also could be relied upon to substitute at the last minute if someone had to
drop out of matches.

8 Elected Captains Statement
James started by stating
he was outside his comfort zone addressing the seniors and was much more
comfortable in front of students who accepted everything he stated.
He thanked Peter for
his year of captaincy and helping him as vice captain. He also thanked Mark for
agreeing to be his vice captain. James stated he had been a member under the 3
previous captains and if he fulfilled his duties half as well he would be
pleased.
His chosen charity is
The Royal Brompton Hospital.
The Royal Brompton
specialises in heart and lung surgery and is a teaching hospital supplying
surgeons to other hospitals.
He was looking forward
to his captaincy and wished everyone an enjoyable 2020 and hoped to play more
social games during his year.
9 Items for discussion
(i)
Birdies and 2’s
It was proposed to play for birdies in individual competitions and 2’s in
team events. This was agreed
unanimously.
(ii)
New Roll Up Competitions
New competitions have been suggested to add more interest to the roll
ups. More suggestions were encouraged and the committee would meet to discuss.
(iii)
Early and Late starter issues
The issue with the early and late starters is that on occasions the late
starters feel that they are held up by the early starters if they play a fourth
player in a rolling stableford joining a team of 3. This item provoked a long
and heated debate which did very little for the harmony of the section. With a
little bit of give and take from both this would not be an issue.
Nobody likes playing the rolling stableford so either the spare men from
the earlies hang back and go out first with the lates or the early arriving
lates make up numbers with the earlies.
The situation is worsened by a block of club t times between the seniors
start times. This is going to be requested to be given to the seniors. There is
a danger that the seniors who are treated extremely generously by the club may
lose more allowing more time to be offered to other club golfers.
Finally a vote was taken to stop the earlies playing 4 men in a 3 men
competition. This was a totally unfair vote as the early starters were grossly
outnumbered. The motion was
agreed with only 2 against.
(iv)
Printing of an annual schedule of events
calendar increasing the membership cost
to £5
This item was explained by James but
received no support.
(v)
Captains Day Event
James proposed to hold
a senior captains day as a fun day for all. This was
unanimously agreed.
(vi)
Computerised draws
This item was withdrawn by the captain
The meeting then
concluded at 15-00

The meeting accepted the minutes as a
true record and there were no matters arising
4 Captain's Report
Barrie opened by
remarking how quickly the year had passed and thanking everyone for their
support knowing it would continue for Peter through the coming year.
His year started with
the problem of continual rain and also having to deal with Sean the General
Manager.
There had been 31 inter
club matches of which 10 won,13 lost,4 halved, and 4 cancelled. 47 seniors
enjoyed the experience of playing in our teams of which Barry Singleton and the Captain played over 20 times. He encouraged members of all standards to
similarly support Peter next year stating it was a good experience meeting
fellow golfers and playing different courses at excellent rates.
We also entered the
usual 4 external team competitions at clubs in our area of which in the last
one at Minehead we did particularly well. One team coming second overall with a
score of 169 only 2 shots below the winners and 3 of our 4BBB players scoring
46 points 1 point off winning.
We entered a team in
the Avalon league for the first time, set up and run by John Wandless aided by
Chris Gingell. The year was surprisingly successful by winning the league but
unfortunately losing to a strong Enmore team in the semi final.
He thanked the
committee for their background support and in particular Alan Davis for returning
at very short notice to run The Opens, Stuart Pope for organising our Charity
day in May, Nick Hill for organising the internal competitions and backing up
John with the blog, J.P. for his excellent and sometimes outrageous work on the
blog, Alan Chance for organising the external competitions and Norman Markby
for the Challenge Cup. Bob Barrow was thanked for the tiresome work
adjudicating the cards after each roll up and Andy Beale for scheduling the
rollup. Bert Robinson's work in keeping our name in the public eye was also appreciated for his Press Reports.
Finally Richard Hall was thanked for all the work he does throughout
the year organising the raffle for the Captain's charity.
The amazing total of
£5000 was raised for the Clic Sargent Charity and everyone was thanked once
again for their support as he relinquished the captaincy handing over to Peter
with his good wishes for the coming year.

6 Financial
Statement
The Treasurer presented
the financial statement for2017/2018 (attached)
The membership stands at 148 of which 11 are over 80 years
old. There have been 17 new members and 13 not renewed.
The pro shop controls
the competition money and will setup a Seniors Club Account. Invoices are
presented to the pro shop for payment and also RAFA.
The monthly raffle run
by Richard Hall raised £1430.
Other significant
incomes were the 65+ Charity Day and
open raffles.
The excellent sum of
£5000 was handed to the Clic Sargent Charity.
Other charities
supported were Children in Need and RAFA.
It was agreed to
maintain the level of £40 each to be paid to the now 5 Greenstaff.
The sum of £300 was
paid to the cleaner Dee Pie to support her after the death of her husband.
There is a healthy bank balance of £3342.09. Subs are to remain at £3 and
will
be collected after the meeting.
Norman Markby was
thanked for covering as Assistant Treasurer for holiday periods.
7 Elected Captain's Statement
Peter refrained from
telling inappropriate jokes and thanked Barrie and the committee for their tireless
hard work behind the scenes making it a very successful year. He particularly
thanked Barrie for his help, dedication and conscientiousness and he would be a
hard act to follow.
He believes the Seniors
section is special and something to be proud of. It is an honour to represent
us all as captain. Golf is a way of life for most of us and takes up a lot of
our time,” it’s what we do”. Peter will endeavour to do his best to make sure
we enjoy our golf and make it a fun year.
There would be no major
changes from last year, if it’s not broken why fix it.
There is a new trophy that
will be contested as a Greensomes competition.
Peter intends to
recognise someone as Clubman Of The Year who excels in some way in the section.
Peter is very pleased
to have Ian Housham to help him as Vice Captain. He believes having similar
outlooks on life they will work well together to make the coming year special.
The chosen charity for
the year is ‘Guide Dogs for the Blind’. Peter has chosen this charity as he has
seen first hand how man’s best friend can change lives and make a huge
difference to people of all ages. It costs £58600 to train a dog from birth to
retirement and they receive no government funding. So that figure is the target
which would be a colossal achievement. He thanked the members in advance and
stated our fund raising is something we should be duly proud of.
Peter was asked to be
Vice Captain last year as no one else was forthcoming and because of his unique
humour and joke telling. Although he has been warned there are times he has to
be politically correct I believe he should just be himself and he will have all
our support.
Finally he wished
everyone an enjoyable 2019 and will try hard to be worthy of the Captaincy.
8 Items for discussion
(i)
Roll Up and Qualifier Entrance Fees
After debating the proposals the entrance fee
for the Roll Up will remain unchanged at £1 and 50p for birdies.
The result of the vote
was 34 to remain unchanged 19 to increase and 4 to scrap entrance money
(ii)
Birdies and 2’s
The proposal to scrap birdies was defeated with only 7 people in favour.
(iii)
Rolling Stableford
The proposal to make this a weekly
competition was defeated with only 16 people in favour.
(iv)
Cheating
The tricky subject
about members cheating created various comments.
The game relies upon
the integrity of the members and anyone deliberately cheating is very difficult
to prove.
Any one seen to be
deliberately cheating should be challenged on the course.
It was stated that some
cases have ended in court.
There was no known
policy from the club.
A point of order was
raised that a proposal must be seconded before being voted on.
