Honiton home match report Monday 19th August 2024.

This was the return home fixture on a drab windy day following our earlier three all draw

away at Honiton. Yet again the home team had a fine win this time five to one  at ' Fortress Cricket'.

The combination of the wind and hard ground made it difficult to hold the ball on the greens

making course knowledge a distinct advantage.

As always a very enjoyable outing with very friendly opposition.

For the record:

Spencer-Farr/ Leigh won 4&2

Rutherford/Gardener won 1up

Lauchlan/Heath won 3&1

Asquith/Mugridge won 4&3

Cording/Hunt won 3&2

Gingell/Wandless lost 2&1

Big thank you to John for stepping in at the last minute having already played in the mornings roll up.

The surprise winner of the wine for nearest the pin in two on the eighteenth was myself. Miles from the pin but the only home player to hold it on the green! Must have been the backspin.

Brean Away 25th July

Gents. Please see attached the results sheet from Brean this afternoon. Over the combined home & away matches we were beaten by 1. The weather could have been better with most games getting a bit wet on the back 9, this wasn’t helped by a 5 ball group from the fairground employees who have free membership and little etiquette (the Brean Capt has formally complained to the Pro Shop) overall it was a good days golf with good company and good food which is what friendly matches is all about. Many thanks to all who travelled today. Keith (Vice)

 Taunton Result 22nd July

Honiton Team (Away) 17th June

Beautiful sunny day, Honiton course in superb condition. Fairways wide and running
for England where's the challenge? GREENS! Very slick with huge borrows and
undulations. Also 17 of the 18 holes have bunkers, lots of them. At home we rarely
get to practise out of bunkers. Perhaps we should lobby for, at least,  our one
practise bunker to be improved?
Always a pleasure to visit Honiton. Friendly inviting good facilities and a great meal
afterwards. Beef stew ( think they thought rain would continue) and dessert.
A three all draw was a decent result could have been better. The gallery from the
Clubhouse saw Mark and Keith, despite both almost being on the green in two on
the eighteenth 3/4 putt to loose 1 down. Heh easily done!

For the record:-
P Three names and Martin Leigh won 2&1
Rob Shelly and Rich Holmes lost 2&1
Terry Rutherford and Derek Gardener won 1 up.
Jim Lauchlan and Dave Asquith lost 6&5
Barrie Heath and Dave Muggo won 3&1
Mark Cording and Keith Hunt lost 1 down.

Bridport v CST

CST suffered their first defeat of the season away at a very breezy Bridport. Players and balls were blown from tees as 50mph winds lashed the cliffs above West Bay making playing conditions almost impossible. Neil Cochran asked for a whip round after golf having lost 10 balls in knee high rough but still managed to half their match with partner Roger Williams.

Match captain John W endured the walk of shame losing 6&4 which would have been much worse if it wasn’t for the valiant endeavours of Jim Lauchlan.

Barrie Heath & Rob Shelley won 2&1

Mark Cording & Dennis Hussey won 4&3

Dave Asquith & Jamie Parkhouse lost 4&2

Martin Leigh & John Baker lost 1 down after been 5 down at the turn to former CST player Tim Ackland. Martin won the bottle of wine for NTP on the infamous 6th hole.

Bridport 3.5 - 2.5 CST

Friendly match result v Brean
Home 21st May 2024
Match Captain - James T Lauchlan

Well done cst for a sterling effort against what seemed wrong handicaps.

A 3_3draw was a great result.

Thanks to all who played today

I have been asked to report more fully on Tuesday's game against Brean

  • Lauchlan and Eric Williams lost on the 18th despite a valiant effort.
  • Mark cording and Edmondo won 1 up despite giving 20 shots.
  •  Barry Heath and Keith Hunt won despite terrible jokes from Keith.
  • The remains of the match to come.
  • I seem to remember Roger Williams collecting the money, .although I am sure they played well.
  • If you are not mentioned yet please send a personal report to me.so I can enlighten the Captain and Readers ( excluding Mr Hone)
  • Charles Summers adds:

Some errant drives by me, offset by solid putting from John B couldn't prevent us going down 4&2 to a seasoned pair of Brean boys.  I will forgo the Ryder cup opportunity if Liv want to make an offer.

Rob Shelley  Chris Gingell lost 3 and 28

Friendly match result v Weymouth

A good result considering we were all giving many shots to Weymouth pairings.

1. J Siabi & T Rutherford won 6 & 4

2. M Cording & M Hone won 2 up

3. B Heath & J Lauchlan lost 4 & 3

4. K Hunt & D Asquith won 1 up

5. C Gingell & J Parkhouse won 5 & 3

6. D Hussey & J Blackburn won 1 up

Thank you everyone for the day.

Cannington 18th April
AWAY - Won 5-1
Match Captain James Lauchlan

Well done CST a great result at cannington..5_1 giving away so many shots and still coming through the victors deserves applause. Thank you r stone for stepping in for Barrie .A true trooper, see you all tomorrow

CST 3 ½ - 2 ½ BRIDPORT

The first friendly of the 2024 season was a hard fought contest with CST recording a narrow victory.

Match captain John W was thankful for Ian Thomas bringing his A game and excellent putting to close out a 3&2 win.

Dennis Hussey and John Baker’s encounter was extremely close throughout, but they lost on the 18th, 1 down.

Rob Shelley and Nick Gabb found themselves 2 down with 2 to play, but won 17 & 18 to finish all square.

Roger Williams and Keith Hunt suffered the “walk of shame” collecting match fees after a 2 & 1 defeat.

But the cavalry came to the rescue with Barrie Heath and Jim Lauchlan, together with Martin Leigh and Neil Cochran inflicting heavy defeats on their opponents 6 & 4.

Barrie Heath won NTP on 16 for the bottle of wine.

Well done guys.

We all look forward to the return match in late May

We all had a lovely day in the sunshine against a very friendly Weymouth team. Barrie Heath picked up the bottle of wine with a fine shot on the 16th for nearest the pin. Again the match meal went down well

May 24th Brean Home
Dave Mugridge & David Asquith               Won 2 & 1
Andy King & Richard Holmes                    Won 2 & 1
Roger Davis & John Baker                          Lost 7 &5

Roger Stone & Dickie Hall                          Won 2 up
Mark Cording & Jim Lauchlan                    Won 1 up

Another fine win in the sunshine although it looked like we were going to get soaked as we set off. Once again the opposition were great company and its fair to say it was an enjoyable day.
There were quite a few tight matches that we just managed to pull through. Although Roger D was in the losing match he made up for it by winning closes to the pin on 16. Steak and Ale pie was the match meal that went down very well

May 12th Long Sutton Away

Chris Gingell & David Asquith                     All Square
Peter Spencer-Farr & Martin Bargery           Won 4 &2
Roger Davis & Chris Rudling                       Won 3 &2
James Parkhouse & Barrie Heath                  Won 2 &1
Jim Lauchlan & Ian Thomas                         Won 6 &5
Mike Hone & Andy Rowland                       Won 5 &3

A great day was had at Long Sutton with the team securing a fine victory 5 1/2  to 1/2. Jim and Ian were the big winners with a fine 6 & 5 win. Thanks to all the others who apart from Dave & myself had great wins. (we only managed a half). The hospitality shown from the Long Sutton team was superb and it was especially nice for me to see so many old friends that I used to play with when I was a member there. The meal afterwards was excellent.
Thanks again to everyone who played for turning up in plenty of time.

Stand-in Captain on the day

Match report, Friendly away at Wheathill Wed 31st March

A team of intrepid golfers from CST took on their counterparts at Wheathill on Thursday. The weather was very cold, with a strong (2-3 club)`northerly wind blowing throughout. There were occasional snow flurries to liven up the proceedings and keep play brisk..

It was their last day with winter rules, so playing the course over the next few weeks will prove challenging, as growth is irregular in some areas.

The food dished up by Vicky was, as usual, excellent - a very tasty Chicken & Ham pie, with plenty of roast New Potatoes and vegetables, followed by the choice of 3 puddings.

Sadly, one team member had not noted the time or date of the fixture, so Steve Holt took on a better ball pair alone. As he said at the end of his match, “I lost the first 3 and it didn’t get any better…”

The winning CST teams were Mark Cording & Edmondo Paoloni and Keith Hunt & Dave Mugridge. Roger Hinds and Stuart Pope halved their match, coming back from 4 down.

 Result:  - Wheathill 3½  CST 2½

Dave Mugridge

Seniors Captain

Knighton Heath KO @ Yeovil, Thursday 24 March.

Unfortunately the Team went down 6-4 at Yeovil after being 4-1 up with great wins from Danny Dowell, Dave Mugridge, Roger Hinds and late replacement Richard Holmes. Dennis Hussey came closes to winning the one match we needed for victory going down by just 2 and 1.

Thursday 17th March Bridport Away

Bridport Friendly Match Report

CSTGC Seniors played their first friendly fixture of the year away in sunny weather at Bridport GC on Thursday, 17th March.  The match was played in sunny weather, with a slight Westerly breeze which made club choice interesting on some holes as it the wind gusted  and veered near the cliff edges. The greens had had some work on them in the previous fortnight, which made for some tricky putts, as the ball wobbled around as it ran out of pace.

The heavy overnight rain had brought a buggy ban and a new large lake (casual) short and left of the first green. The Captain’s four ball constituted an Englishman, an Irishman, a Scotsman and a Welshman, which would have made a good intro to a joke on St Patrick’s Day. This game was fought out to a half, which was better than most of the team, with the only winning team being the Hone/Cochran partnership. The worst performing team of Davis/Thomas were required to collect the match day fees, in the usual tradition.

Edmondo, our oldest player secured the nearest the pin prize on the 11th hole, a par 3 over water, with a front pin, close to the pond. Mike Hone was pretty close, so Edmondo’s shot must have been quite something.

The food was was tasty, the company great and the weather pleasant. A very enjoyable fixture, albeit a loss and we look forward to welcoming Bridport to CSTGC in the summer.
