Wednesday 25th Feb 2026

Congrats to Seniors management team today, CST was sat in a low cloud with limited visibility for first hour or so. Huge pile of earlies were hanging on as it refused to lift and more and more people arrived.

Honor stepped out of the bat cave at 09:15 and declared it playable and it amazingly was gone 5 minutes later. Chris, James & Ian scrambled to put out WL Teams in pairs, not helped by a few disappearing to Bulbury Woods - and we were striding down the first at 09:20. A few went over to 6th to start, but not in the Comp.

Wearther improved, no wind and 13 Degrees , with the sunshine adding warmth. Buggies were back on and it was very playable.

See below for John Sweet  mystery

Big crowd in waiting

Jeremy & Dennis close the gap, as does Mark 2  ; Nick Gabb's Team got a major boost as he upgraded Rutherford to Bargery and leapt up leader board with 43 points and a £12 Payout.

So, when we returned to the Clubhouse at around 12:50, John Sweet was sitting there.  I asked him about his Golf Trolley, and there the confusion began...
Last Week, John's Trolley had failed and Matt found him a repair outlet in Exeter, so as far as we know, he booked his Trolley in and was driving down on Thursday 19th. Meantime I lent him my spare Motor Caddy to play on Friday, and when he came in, took the battery off him to re-charge and he placed my trolley in the container.

Today I asked him how his trolley repair was going and he replied "What Trolley ?", denies any memory of going to Exeter , or having my trolley and saying he had a New One.

I marched him to the container , where trollies can be stored. He unlocked the unit by spinning the combination wheels like a professional Peterman, and pointed to the corner. "That's my Trolley" parked in the corner. "I've never had your trolley"

Alongside, however was my Trolley complete with a Bass Pro Shop Towel I got for xmas.
I was checking if it was Waterproof !

I reclaimed my trolley and wondered where did the new looking trolley come from. John had no idea. Asked Matt in the Pro Shop and he hadn't sold him one.

If you have any knowledge of where this Trolley came from , or if he ever went to Exeter - it would help us to help him a little.

Unfortunately, John is deteriorating week by week and surely needs some medical intervention soon.

Update from Bob Rees

Hi John

Thank you for my front page splash yesterday. A few details not quite right.

It was Bob Dennet who I was talking to not Martin Leigh,Bobs daughter lives in the same village as me Hinton St George and he was over doing some gardening for her.I was under the surgeons knife for my hernia in June 8 months ago at Frome Hospital, and that’s turned out OK. My sciatica which I think was a trapped nerve driving off the fifth tee took longer to sort out but it seems OK now.

I did speak to the club and told them I wouldn’t be joining last year but may try again when the weather gets better with a buggy. I did want to play the 3 new holes but I don’t suppose the are up and running yet. I am 82 not 84 until Dec 2027.

Hope you and your wife are in good health.

Bob Rees

Meanwhile from somewhere a little more South, greetings from Norman and Sue Markby in a place few ever get to see....

Thurs 19th - Closed again after heavy rain overnight.

Sir Clive has asked us to post a few words that he spoke at Dickie Hall's Funeral - telling the Family how much he meant to us up at the Golf Club.

John, for those Seniors who missed it and want to donate towards the juniors section of the cricket club let me know and I’ll collect it and forward any donations.

It’s the least we can do considering the amount Dickie must have raised for the Seniors charity over the years.

 Clive  Fisk

My eulogy ( Sam and Maia ) are two of their grandchildren. Happy for you to post it .

  Well done Sam and Maia

He will always be Dickie to us, Jenny always called him Richard and the grandchildren? “Dickie doughnut”.

Today we are here to honour a dear friend, a loyal club member and a man whose quiet strength left a lasting mark on all of us. He faced his illness with remarkable stoicism. Not once did he complain, and not once did he allow his own challenges to overshadow his kindness or his commitment to others. That was simply who Dickie was.

His generosity was woven into the fabric of our club. Month after month, Dickie ran the golf club raffle, Jenny and Nikki would make up a fantastic food hamper for the annual Charity golf tournament. Over the years, raising thousands of pounds for good causes. It wasn’t just about the money—it was about bringing people together, creating a bit of fun, and doing something meaningful for the community.

And speaking of fun, he was never one to shy away from a bit of fancy dress. Charity golf days were his stage and he embraced them with enthusiasm and humour.

I like to think I only managed to outdo him once—when I turned up as “Pikey” from Dad’s Army. He took it in good spirit, of course, because he loved seeing people laugh.

He had one last milestone he was determined to reach; his granddaughter Alice’s wedding this coming  October. Although he won’t be there in person, there’s no doubt he’ll be there in spirit—proud, smiling, and watching over the family he adored.

In true fashion, even in his passing he wanted to help others. He asked that any donations go to the juniors at the cricket club, who are in need of new nets. It’s a gesture that reflects exactly who he was: a man who believed in supporting the next generation, in giving back, and in leaving things better than he found them.

Apologies to anyone who stayed away due to the somewhat erroneous weather prediction on the Blog, It did rain, but not until about 45 seconds after the last group was in the 19th.

Biting Northerly wind and a light drizzle at the start allowed 6 groups to venture out - expecting the worst !

Messrs Dennett; Hilson; Evans & Heath just played 11 Holes whilst Laughing Jim played Pool and Long Tall Rob gallantly pulled out of the roll up and walked around with Group 4.

Chris & James were absent due to Hospital appointments.

apol for missing James from attendees at Dickie Hall's wake,.

Nice to see a memorial in paper from Christine Curtis, who never fails to remember Martin Curtis who we lost 13 Years ago.

Bob Dennett tells us he bumped into Bob Rees who says he is considering returning to Golf when the sun shines again after recent problems with Sciatica and a Hernia Op 8 Months ago..

Bob aged just 82 1/4 - still time to come back Bob

The Buggy Ban, despite being annoying, was probably correct as the course was very slippy in places as it was like walking on wet clay in some places.

To Jeremy, however, a veteran of 1000 Point-to-point races in boggy going - it felt like home as he eagled the 10th with the only 2 of the day and Birdied the 17th on a bumpy temporary green. Sometimes, you just have to doff your cap and say "well played".

Monday 16th Feb 2026

Brrrr but beautiful...following a meeting with their bank managers, Martin & Mike  switch to earlies who scoop 94% of the £48 kitty as Dennett & co wrestle a quid each.

Wednesdays comp will be a 2 from 3 Stableford not an individual stableford

2 February 2026

A service of remembrance for Dickie Hall was held at Taunton Crematorium on the 13th February attended by 80-90 friends and relatives. A number of tributes were paid to our friend Dickie with particular emphasis on his generosity and fund raising, which we remember well within the Senior's section of CST. After the service, there was a wake at Chard Cricket Club, another of Dickie’s passions. The collection was in aid of the Cricket Club.

Clive Fisk paid a moving tribute to Dickie on behalf of the club.

CST members attending were : Messrs Beale, Davis, Hackling, Heath, Hill, Hilson, Hone, Robinson, Clarke, Wandless, Williams and several wives of members.
