Billy - It's a Volt-Free Drop !

Roll-Up Result:-
Wet & Windy, so Early 5 just went out and did their own thing, with  Brian & ANO giving up after 5 Holes , and Clive giving John Baker & Ian Frost a good spanking.

We were 7 in the later roll-up, with rain forecast to clear by 09:30 - which it did and the sun shone.
Rob Coombs, Chris Hiam & John Sweet were in one Team  and Farmer Bob, JKP and Billy H in the other.  Martin Bargery was grumpy as Debbie had packed his sandwiches, spare socks and pants - but forgot his Trolley - so he left us trying to remember where his new House was.

Bitter wind made it tough, even though we were just playing a scramble.  Rob led his Team to a Par, Par, Par start - with Farmer Bob making 5,4,4 so a couple behind. Bob pulled it back by 9th - both Teams taking 42 strokes - at this time we did not know the Handicaps.

Both Teams had bagged their '5-drives each' by the 16th so it was the 3,4,4 finish by Umpire Rob that stole the back-9 from Bob's 4,5,4.   80 Gross for Rob and 83 for Bob - and we reckon Rob maybe had 1.5 shots extra handicap .

Despite Farmer Bob's detailed examination of the opposition's card - no-one was listening and no money had been collected so we all went home penniless but purged of the weekend malaise.

Bob's credibility had taken a blow earlier when he had failed to notice that the Staircase to the 19th had been floored over and 12 foot Patio Doors gleamed 3 feet behind him.

Can everyone check in up stairs so the good folk running this know your here and can check you in, and bring your card upstairs after you've entered in on the computer.

This competition is a qualifier (Acceptable) round

BARRACUDA/SPLIT 6 Scoring

Another matchplay version, but in this one everyone plays on their own. Six points are awarded for each 3-Ball , based on Stableford Points on the 18 Holes.. If there is an outright winner and an outright second place then it is four points to the winner and two to the second place. If two people tie for first it is three points each to them. If two people tie for second they get a point. If everyone ties, ie same Stableford Total ,  they get two points each.

Example:- If John Sweet score 31 Points, JKP 29 Points and Chris H scores 29 Points, then Chard gets 4 Points and other two Towns get 1 Point each.

All we need are your Stableford Points and we can allocated the scores for your Town.

A fine victory for for Peters team. Well done

Monday 8th April 2024

 Gentlemen

WHS

As we get to grips with the new handicap system, and considering the

variety of games that we play, in the short term it will be easier all

round if you just put your gross scores into the computer.

Later this month the committee will get together and John Wandless

will take us through all the new numbers and those where 4BBB scores

will/may affect players handicaps, and we can update the seniors after.

Chris Gingell will set the computer up so that it works it all out for us.

Charity Open

The charity open is not far away, and in order to make it a successful

day for the charity and all those taking part, I would like to ask “if any

seniors have any contacts either in local businesses or further afield to

enquire whether they would either, sponsor a golf hole (suggested

amount is £100) or donate a prize either for the raffle or as a prize.

Likewise with seniors, if you wanted to club together to sponsor a hole

it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you to those seniors who have already entered a team, there is

room for more teams.

Captain’s Away Day

There are currently 43 names on the list for the away day at Isle of

Wedmore. Could I ask that all those named please pay a £10 deposit to

Keith Branchflower via the brown envelopes in the changing room.

Please put your name on the envelope and “Captain’s Away Day” if you

prefer, you can pay the full cost (£46) if you prefer. Full payment is

required by 20 th June. Any payments made up to this date will be

refunded if you cannot make it. However once I have given the final

numbers to Isle of Wedmore depending on their generosity you may

not get a refund if you cannot attend the day.

Friendly Matches/Avalon/KHKO/SSB

Thank you to those seniors that have already indicated or been

nominated to play in any of the above - mentioned matches so far. We

are now entering the busiest period in our calendar with games coming

thick and fast. The Avalon, KHKO & SSB are the competitive matches

and is suited to those players who relish competition. The friendly

matches are a more laid-back affair and although winning is great it is

as the heading says “friendly” also it doesn’t matter if your handicap is

a little on the high side. Some clubs have limits others don’t it is 4BBB

so you won’t be out on limb but if you haven’t tried it is an enjoyable

day. Coffee/Bacon Roll 18 holes and a meal for no more than £20

what’s not to like? Please check the seniors notice board for all match

sign-up sheets.

Finally

Thank you to all those seniors that have volunteered to take on the

duties of Match organisers, match captains and for your support for

the raffle that Jim Lauchlan organises/runs.

If you have anything you would like to discuss or complain about then

please speak to myself or Keith.

Farewell to Bryan Frost.

12th March 1939   Born

…….12th March   2024   Died ….What a tidy Man  was Bryan Lenard Frost.

Fresh back from the Funeral in Yeovil  where I was proud to be in the company of Seniors Golfers his Family were delighted to see so many there. Just about 10 others present- we were the biggest Majority.

Started to jot down initials of Golfers MH, DH, BH, KH, NH  and began  to lose it.

So Mike Hone, Dickie Hall ( loaded with Steroids), Barrie Heath, Keith Hunt, Nick Hill, John Sweet, Ken Trott, Ted Bryden, Bert Robinson, Mark Cording, Eric Williams, Derek Gardener, Paul England, JKP, Maurice Arnold & June, Norman Markby

Apol from Richard Forster who was abroad and gutted to miss it. Jolly Roger had dental issues and Mick Aldridge was also unable to make it at the last. Ian Thomas had intended to attend, but with Golf Course being closed, couldn’t justify sitting around for 7 Hours.

As we sat down for the service, and read about The Wake being held in Palmer’s Fish & Chip Shop- I heard Dickie say “ Can you get a drink there ?”

As usual, we learned a lot about Bryan.

Born in Worksop to an RAF Dad, so travelled around a bit.  Was a keen Scout and spent his youth messing about in Sherwood Forest.  One Sister, Jill who was 3 Years Younger and who had sent a message of support.

Married to Brenda for 47 Years and lost her in 2007.

Son Mark, who was there with Wife Marion,

 and Daughter Alison.

Bryan’s Dad was a Master Carpenter, so was Bryan and so is Son Mark.

Bryan was initially called up for National Service and summonsed to join a Scots Highland Regiment for training.  Transferred to Malay Regiment and served out there, then some time in Ireland, where he got shot in the Leg.

Settled down South, spending time in various places, Coombe St Nicholas, Merriott, Yeovil etc.

Started selling intricate Dolls Houses which he had hand crafted.

Himself and Brenda always finished the day with a Whisky & Dry Ginger.

Nice Floral Tribute from Son Mark & Family.

Mark still has the creased-up blue pac-a-mac.

Still not sold Segway or his 3 sets of Golf Clubs – but may see him soon as Bryan has requested his ashes be scattered around the Golf Course.

Many more strings to his bow and listed randomly below:-

  • ·        Self-taught French
  • ·        Dingy Sailing with the Family
  • ·        Fishing for Trout
  • ·        Played Guitar
  • ·        Very PC literate – and often face-timing with Family.
  • ·        Member of Caravan Club for Family Holidays – often up in Bonnie Scotland.
  • ·        Sheffield Wednesday Supporter
  • ·        Liked Dogs ( Labrador)
  • ·        Final Home was Wyndham Court, Yeovil – where he made many friends ( mostly Ladies) and latterly very close to Anita.

I went up to one Lady and asked “ Are you Anita” – to which she replied “ No, I’m the one before Anita “ ..Ooops !

Apologies if my Taxi left a few minutes early, but we were sat in the Car Park of the Golf Club as Penny came down from the Bar to head for home and told us there was no-one inside – so we decided to head off – but thanks to Derek, Ted Mike etc who picked up the waifs and strays.  It was an easy 20 minute drive with zero hold ups.

Another ‘Wicker Funeral, with a Celebrant Helen Salway-Roberts who did an excellent job and had contributions from several Family Members.

Music Wonderful Life – Louis Armstrong  and we exited to Frank Sinatra singing My Way – but today, for one final time it was definitely Bryan’s Way.

Well done to everyone for taking the trouble to attend, my 2nd Funeral of the day as I was down in Weymouth just 4 hours earlier.

Wednesday 3rd April 2024

New computer system could not handle the Scramble today so with a lot of help from Quinny its now all sorted.
