What a Day as Storm Agnes threatened to blow away the Gazebos and all those lovely cakes. But we got away with it as rain finally arrived as some 90 People sat down for a Buffet Lunch.
Committee were up there at 06:30 to prepare as registration with Quinny started at 07:30 with the Branchflowers running the raffle.
We missed Dickie & Jenny hall up there - get well soo both of you.

Nice to see lots of old friends, Tim Ackland, Mike King, Stuart Forbes etc

Once again you all came up trumps with the raffle
..and plenty of sponsorships prizes 'organised' by Dave Walgrove & Clive

Then it was  time to head off to the Starting Holes - with the much-fancied 'Team England'  starting on the 7th - after a 30 minute pep-talk from Manager Jim Lauchlan - whoe lovely smile lasted for nearly 4 minutes..until that first 'whoosh'..

At EVERY HOLE WAS A SPONSOR RAISING SOME £1,600 ALONE !!
THANK YOU ALL

As usual, lots of Cakes.

Everywhere were chances for an ACE - from Cash to Holidays to Club memberships

The Ladies of the Air ambulance had another Cake Stand with the ever-popular Pope cider

Steve Holt fires one to 5th Green as clouds lingered but retained their wetness for those further North.

Around Midday it was all over for the earlies as they saw their fine 54  sit in 2nd place on Leader Board..but at the TOP of the Par 3 Competition.
Dennis, Jeremy, Gordon & David

We were delighted with the continued support of Poundbury Wealth Management who sponsored  a hole and the Hole-In One Prize. New Girl Kirsty is taking over from Katie and seen here presenting Phil Hunt with the Large Bottle of Red Wine for winning the Registration Draw.
It could not have gone to a more worthy Liver...sorry Winner !

Farmer Bob looking particularly impressed with the Buffet !

Lots now began to happen..starting with Sir Clive who put his heart & Soul into boosting the fund-raising - earning a special Thank You from the Skipper.

Another £200 was raised by the Auction of a Henry Hoover....
just kidding..Henry Vacuum Cleaner generously donated by Numatic and The Hamper donated by Dickie & Jenny Hall

Dave got mighty close on 3rd hole to an Ace, with his ball stopping 16 inches from the pin.

Mark Kilpatrick was closest on 13th - with Paul England just falling 5 centimeters further away - as Captain had supplied measuring tapes on every hole.
Paul was last to play in his group as JKP was in bunker, Jim was even shorter and martin thumped an iron onto left band. Team England were mighty relieved when Paul put his 8- Iron into heart of green.

Think other NTP's were won by Long Sutton who not surprisingly won the Par 3 Competition by finishing the 5 Holes in just 12 shots.

Team of low handicappers
N Griffiths (9) ; M Hawkins (8); A Lyons (12); R Body (12)

4th Place
winning Ironing Board covers were The Earlies

The Captain made a long speech so maybe if he has it in hard copy he can paste it here.  Ladies got special thanks, especially Ruth & Mari who were sat by the par 3's all day adjudicating for the Aces - looking a little chilly at times.

Tuesday 24th August 2021

One of Devon's oldest courses, Wrangaton sent 2 Teams to support our Charity Day.
The clear winners on the day were Wrangaton 1, with 158 points.
Bill Purser, Peter Scott, Phil Edwards, Dave Roase, Pete Bryant,
Steve Bryant, Neil Parker and Pete Barravel.

..with of course the magnificent new Trophy from the mind of Mr Stuart Pope...

Runners-Up were a Team of renegades and Brigands, who were re-named "The Sinners" after their interpretation of the Smart-Casual Dress Code...unlike the vert smart Seniors Captain ...

The Dress Code was rather a strange one as this is usually a dressy affair as everyone dines together at a formal dinner. This time, with people eating and playing in their groups, meals were served from 13:00 right through to 18:30 as it got warmer & warmer in the Marquee..the reluctance to put on long

Thursday 17th September 2020

A day that could have been a success story for our charity event, turned out to be disappointing due to management decision not to allow us to do what other clubs are doing following the same guidelines and yet interpreting it differently to what our club management did. We were not allowed to run raffles, even though we had suggested alternative ways of doing this with no gathering or contact and without handling cash. We had put a lot of efforts to get two hole-in-one prizes which were again ruled against and denied us a substantial amount of funds for our nominated charity. Today (Sat 19th) it was captain’s day at CST and they had all sorts of money raising competitions such as NTP and if I am not mistaken raffles and other bits and pieces. I will dig out more information very soon and be asking for explanations as to why we were not allowed to do the same.

So far we managed to raise around £2700 which is an excellent amount considering the restrictions we were faced with. We were given the score cards yesterday because they were quarantined for 24 hours. We could have had the results almost instantly on the day if we were allowed to set up our computer and enter results as and when they came in. This would not have put anyone at risk and would have been safer than getting the cards home and recording the scores. Any way it is done and hopefully we will have this awful condition come to an end with emergence of a safe vaccine soon.

I like to thank everyone that contributed to this charity event and am very grateful for your good deeds. Impressions from the visiting teams were very complimentary and they all enjoyed a very nice & pleasant day at CST.

·         I'd like to thank the staff for their hard work and lovely service. Everyone I spoke to were very pleased with the quality of food and the service level.

·         A big thank you to Dave King and his groundsmen for having the course in mint condition. The only minor negative feedback relating to the course was the condition of tees and one or two greens with a hole in the middle.

·         A big thank you to Lisa for running this event smoothly and efficiently.

·         A special THANK YOU to PAUL MATTHEWS and MARK CORDING for making very generous donations to our charity.  And Finally

·          I'd like to thank Stuart and all those who worked hard to make this event a success.

The winners of the event were CST team 2 with a total score of 165

Lovely touch by Mike Light, remembering Gracie, his love of 62 years whose ashes were scattered at his favourite Golfing Venue in Cornwall last week.

Typical Yorkshire language, but rather more generous that their County men's long held reputation - well done Bryan & Richard....
,,but there were so many more and hopefully we'll get the full list later.

We were finished before Midday and preparing ourselves for a 3 course meal.

Cards were simply dropped into the locked container and we were escorted to our tables where drinks orders were taken...

It is difficult to decide where to start with the Seniors Charity Day because I thought it was a tremendous day but it is for others to judge. I do know that 104 over 65 Seniors played from twelve different clubs, enjoyed a days golf with friends in dry weather,  ate a fine three course meal in lovely surroundings, raised a lot of money for a worthy Charity and went home promising to come back next year.

These days do not happen without a huge effort from a large number of people. Commander in Chief was Stuart Pope who with his adjutant,  Alan Chance put hours of hard work and personal expense into organising the day and deserve all the plaudits and the major credit.

However even they could not do it on their own. Therefore I want to list those principally involved with my warmest thanks.

Donna Adey, Ladies Captain, and the ladies section for handling the registration, doing the raffle and two's comp, manning the two half way huts and baking cakes.
Mick Aldridge for printing the welcome and score cards.
Head Chef Andy and his team for producing a lovely meal.
Dave and the green keepers for presenting our course in its best possible light.
Denise and the Bar and Catering staff who served us with style and a smile.
Sam and Mark in the Pro Shop with, among other things, printing signs and organising seating plans.
Bob Barrow and James Siabi for handling the arduous task of entering the individual scores on the computer and producing the list of winners.
Jenny Chance for the beautiful flower table settings.
Our treasurer Keith Branchflower who keeps superb accounts and makes sense of the monies that were coming at him from all directions.
To Jacqui Hill, a great friend of our section, who supported the event and presented the prizes.
Nick Hill for taking photographs and, as always, helping in every way he can and also to John Pearce for his considerable input with the playing schedule and using the blog to such great effect.
Last but not least to all our wonderful sponsors and generous Seniors who gave money, auction items and raffle prizes. I am told if we raise over 5000 pounds this year we can name a Guide dog puppy, we are well on the way!

A great day. I hope to give, with Keith's help, a final figure for the sum raised on the day for Guide Dogs but in the meantime may I say how proud I was to front such a fine event.
