The Passing of Peter Smith, Club Captain 1994
Founder Member "Elderly Gentlemen's Golf Society"
Just heard the very sad news. I am so sorry that Peter has passed. I am very proud to have been able to call him a friend. It is only a few weeks ago that Edmond, Jacqueline, Gloria, Chris Willy and I had a very nice lunch at one of his watering holes. He was one of the founder members of EGGS and really its leading light until he had to give up.
I will always remember the dinner in the evening of his Captains day when he had had a few!!! and stood on the table to give a speech. He was subsequently taken home by Sue and then asked her if he could drive her home. Goodness knows what a policeman would have said if he had been breathalised.
Even at the end when he was having a lot of problems
breathing, he still maintained his good humour and concern for all.
Rest in peace Peter and I hope you can now
be reunited with Doreen.

With the Captain engaged in yet another Match, the late Roll Up was swamped by the earlies 15 to 12 but the forecast of rain from midday was probably another factor, which proved extremely accurate as the heavens opened as St Mary's Church rang out 12 times.
A lot of thought, exchange of Emails with our friends from The Dorset, and studying
of the local weather forecast resulted in the decision to play our match in the hope
that the impending bad weather would not spoil our day. Wrong! We did start
earlier than scheduled and used both the first and fifth tees to speed things up
but we all were drenched.
Three matches managed fourteen holes and the rest slightly less.
As it happened we were up in two, down in two and all square in two when we abandoned
and thus an honourable draw was declared and we all adjourned to the bar via
a hot shower. Only the second match affected this year by the weather so we should
not complain and the course will benefit.

..meanwhile back at the Roll Up...
Nice pleasant morning with a few knobbly knees still on display as the Autumn Equinox arrived.
Farmer Bob was firmly in charge as he took home the runner beans brought in by Mike Hone, went out first and came in first - had a run of 5 straight Pars 13 through 18 and found a rare 50p piece in the change.
Bob's Team, with Martin & David - pulled away from the field by virtue of their scoring on the back 6 holes, with 3 to count with holes of 9.8.8.6.6.4 - 41 points and 5 Under Par.
At the other end of the scale were Pearce/Trott/Rees who had a blistering start with 18 points on the first 6 holes - mainly helped by Ken's 4 Points on both 2nd & 3rd . Then it all came tumbling down as the standard of golf was not sustained and they agreed to call it a day as the rain fell heavily and they tried to bluff Bob that they had started on the 16th but the markings on the card had somehow been washed away.
We all passed the Captain & Team playing The Dorset and it rather looked like they were in for a bit of a soaking.
Note Nobby's new Handicap, slashed 3 by Frank.
