Report for Wednesday 17th February
Only the brave turned out on a mildly wet day that was
forecast to get worse as the day progressed, and it did.
The ‘Early Birds’ must have looked at the forecast and
had a No Show.
As a result, the late starters turned out in an off the
cuff Hassle (two 4 Balls) over nine holes.
More than eight
turned up for the late roll up, however for numerous reasons four failed to get into the wet spirit
of the day. It was intimated that the Vice Captain refrained from going out
because the total pot was not worth the effort of getting wet, also he wanted
to rest an elbow injury sustained during
the past weekend so that he would be injury free for Fridays Canadian
Greensomes competition.
On return of the “Wet Larks”, it was a pleasure to listen
to some of the antics that had evolved during their rounds.
For example: 1.
Bob Barrow marked his card in the warmth and dry of the changing
room,(obviously a reason to normally be DQ’d as the card should be completed
and signed prior to leaving the course ) however leniency prevailed and he was let off.
2. Iain Rowland's got so wet,he left after a coffee to
visit the Pro, to invest in some new waterproofs, a dear day for him as he lost
his £1 stake as his team came second.
3. Mick Aldridge was spied from the upper rooms of the
clubhouse standing directly behind his playing partners whilst they were
putting on the 18th to see the correct line of the putt, normally not allowed under the Rules of Golf, but was
let off as he still missed his putt, however he did hit the hole and lipped
out.
4. Norman Markby playing in the Dream Team chipped in on
the 5th to help towards one of the 4 birdies that his team achieved.
5. Keith Branchflower was informed that it was a Left
Handers course, however his majestic drive on the 4th was not
taken,as he was sluggish walking to his ball, and his playing partners decided
not to wait for him, and took a shorter drive to save time. Looks like Mrs
Branchflower will have to buy him a new umbrella as his decided that it had
enough of the rain and turned inside out and disintegrated.
6.Mike Hone had a great STEADY game , picking up on most
holes as not required.
The Vice Captain and diamond Des Denning were glad to
hear the tales of woe, and rejoiced that staying in the clubhouse out of the
rain, enabled them to have a couple of pints and put the World to Rights.
The winning team, which happened to be the Dream Team of
the day, played some excellent golf in the horrible conditions, and returned a
gross 32 against par of 36. This round included 4 birdies.
( Unlucky !!!!!
Birdies were not paid out today).
