Monday 8th February - 3-Ball Hassle

Not much sign of life from the early birds, just Malcolm sat there playing with his clip board, but numbers gradually built by 9 o'clock so Captain Roger managed to organise the 10 players below to go out and challenge the 9-Holes that were available to us.

Not an easy drive up to the Club as trees were down and floods everywhere. Somerset Roads Dept had been called out 200 times over the weekend and we hear Donyatt was flooded.

Take care if you have to go out today as lots of wood and water on roads and wind is due to exceed 70 mph.

Des claims he was ready to go out but Celia had forgotten to clean his clubs over the weekend, so withdrew. Mick Aldridge and Brian were delighted to be able to join the main roll-up and take full part in the comp.

1st hole was not too bad, downwind and everyone managed a Par to the Main Green.. 2nd was very tricky as wind was 90 Degrees from left and Crater was target. Farmer Bob hit a perfect 3-wood over the trees and onto the green, but unfortunately the main one and not the temp. Again, nothing between the teams as all managed a Par 3.  3rd hole was from ladies tee, but very aggressive wind from left saw JKP put his drive on course for Ilminster High Street, luckily Norman kept one low into the gulley. 2 Teams again managed a Par, but an outrageous long putt from Pearce gave his Team the lead with a Birdie 3.
4th was directly into the wind and playing long for Teams 2&3 who made Par once more - but again 3 great shots from the leaders saw Norman sink another Putt for a Birdie.
5th saw the first crack from the Star-studded Team as they carded a bogey 5 to slip behind.
6th was down wind, but the skies suddenly darkened and the golfers were battered by an icy-cold 10  minute hail storm that would have sent most sensible players back to the Clubhouse, but not the Seniors as there was £10 up for grabs and Roger had already declared 'Winner takes All'.
Bert & Co pulled a shot back here as they made Par, with the other Teams both hitting bogies.
Unfortunately this slight edge was given straight back as they did the unforgivable and bogeyed a 110 yard Par 3.
17th was tricky into the wind and a waterlogged temporary green. Another slip by the leaders as they 2-putted to a bogey 5 with the others making Par.
So the 18th was going to be crucial as JKP hit a massive drive that went beyond the Temporary, whereas Norman was just short and the better option. Three Putts for Eagle all stayed out, but a tap-in Birdie set a good target for the following Teams. Nobby was complaining that it was like being on a route march as has was nagged from tee to green.
Roger & Co all were  passed the pin with their chips and failed to sink the returns, so finished with a Par and a Round of 37. Bert & Co nearly stole it again as Mike Hone's Putt for an Eagle 2 stopped inches from the hole, so Birdie it was and a Par score of 36 was achieved.

Nobby was now looking a little happier as the small pile of £1 coins was edged towards him by the adjudicator. Even in the Clubhouse, however, there was work to do as Farmer Bob & Roger dug out every trick in the book to try and effect a DQ - written in pencil, use of nicknames, only 1 decimal point, too much bragging & gloating and much more, then followed efforts in trying to enforce handicap reductions....but eventually the money was handed over without encumbrance.

Alan has just sent over Start Times for Round 4 of Winter League, which I'll post shortly and Norman was shocked into action on the March Hare as he suddenly realised the February is marching on.

I bet Captain Nick is really sorry he's missing all this lovely weather..but Wednesday is looking like an absolute 'Scorcher' in relative terms, so come on up and join us.
