Wednesday 21st October - 4BBB
Forecast rain duly arrived and boy have we been lucky, having so little to mess us about to date.
Early boys showed little interest in going out as persistent drizzle and low cloud made it pretty dull looking. Only Andy Beale stayed on until the later ones started to drift in, Bert, Keith ,Nick, J-Mac etc ..but most of them drifted home again bemoaning the work they will have to carry out.
A big Society had meantime arrived and were trying to orientate themselves around the clubhouse. They were the British Legion Club from Portland and were gobsmacked with all the changes.
Mind you, Jackie has not been idle as a whole host of other tasks are underway. Faded Gable-end of Liam's wall has been painted white and both Locker Rooms are undergoing big lighting changes.
The long- awaited blinds have been fitted on the sports bar, so that summer sun will be an issue no more. Also appearing on the walls are more 'collectors' item pictures etc that have been collected by Jackie & Steve.
All the Windows have been replaced to the Locker Rooms & Gents Toilets, most of which were broken.
Talking to Nick Hill this morning it seems that the Seniors are going to be Dressed-Up rather than Dressed Down as J-Mac is coming in his ceremonial Kilt and Ted wants us all in DJ's - so be warned if you fail the dress code. See my note on Gala Page about the event being moved into the Main Restaurant, so we'll be nice and warm.
Another bit of news that we picked up from the Portland Visitors was the impending closure of Canford Magna Golf Club..so you heard it here first folks. Apparently the owner also has Remedy Oak.
Story is confirmed in Bournemouth Echo.
SHOCKED members of Canford Magna golf club have been told it will close on March 31 next year.
Staff of the course and will lose their jobs and around 1,000 members will have to find other clubs. Dorset's largest golf course, on green belt land to the north of Poole, has confirmed that it will shut at the end of the season, saying it was "struggling" and continuing "to make a loss".
..how lucky are we to be alive and thriving.
So what about the Golf Today !
The Weather continued until 09:15 when it lightened up, so 6 brave souls were left to go and play, so we drew 2 three-man teams to play another Hassle, keeping Barrie Heath and Bob Barrow separate. It was a tad damp as we started, but got better and better as we went around and the course was absolutely bone-dry. Only Water was at the entry to the course by 5th Tee where the Rooks were enjoying a lovely bath.
Farmer Bob, Mike Hone and myself formed 1 team as we discarded handicaps and drives and just played it as it came. We were faultless as not a single bogey appeared on our card with Bob performing a few magic tricks on a couple of holes to keep us on track, such as a 60 Degree bend on a 7-iron on the 18th as all three Tee-Shots were in the Trees. Handsome Birdies on the 7th, 9th and 17th gave us a grand total of 67 as we stood on the 18th awaiting Barrie, Richard & Andy B.
Every-time we bumped into them, Richard was boasting about Birdies, but he never actually mentioned the bogies they made until the Score Card was produced. They also had 3 Birdies but those 2 bogies made all the difference as their total was 69.
...bit of a Grey Day !
The season is changing fast as the trees begin to turn. The Greenkeepers were busy removing that annoying one twixt 5th & 18th that was just hanging there.
Nick Hill has just sent through start times for Mondays Medal, so I'll put them up later.
Captain J-Mac is desperately collecting all the 2014 Trophies for re-engraving, so if you have any lying around, now would be a good time to bring them up.
