Monday 8th January 2024

What a difference a day makes, as we rolled up to minus 3 degrees of crispy sunshine. Good thing that buggies were back and farmer Bob was able to play for the first time this year.

Went out with Farmer Bob and Dave Mugridge - which was quite an experience, Dave had to adjust quickly as his normal chips made a sound like Bairstow hitting a six when it bounced onto the Green - then off again.

It was rock-hard.

temperature crept up to around plus 4 for a while, then a new front moved in and a cold wind lowered it once more. Luckily out trio were unimpeded and just about caught the earlies and had our hands around a warm coffee before 12:30...

BEWARE

The snow is set to arrive this evening with a dusting expected across some the county's largest conurbations. A flurry is expected in Yeovil at 6pm while similar is forecast in Taunton at 9pm.

The city of Bath could see a significant dump of the white stuff with heavy snow expected at 7pm with lighter snowfall set to continue until 10pm.

We knew we were in trouble when  Terry Hackling and his early 3-ball were sitting on 97 ..without counting any contribution from the Phantom Pro.
Let's assume it went into the hole
10 Points on 1st 3 holes, when  Roger birdied 2nd, a healthy lead which they never lost.
..then Terry scored 16 points on the Par 3 Holes on own, with 32 Shots he got 2 shots on most of them.

..to be fair, pick and place is a huge advantage to us high handicappers as those delicate chips from atop a tuft of grass are a tad easier than having to dig them out of the longer grass.

Dennis & Rod peruse The Levels..but no sign of water like previous years...

If we zoom-in a little more, Glastonbury Tor is visible

We are about 707 feet, looking across The Levels to  the 515 foot Tor - which was built by Queen Guinevere to keep an eye on King Arthur when out Golfing. Her previous 3 husbands had been drowned at Long Sutton in  1163; 1182 and 1191 .
It was Merlin the Mathematician that calculated that at just 4 Meters above sea-level, Long Sutton was the more likely place where the Lake of Excalibur would be located and thence the Control Room at Glastonbury was sold-off to some high-fliers from Londinium.

Thanks to Mike Hone for his historical research.

Wednesday 3rd January 2024

Anyone who has ordered a club Polo Shirt please make sure that you've paid your £25 before Jan 15th.

Wow, it was wet up there Wednesday as bookend pairing of Sweet (34) & Hildred(8) almost stole the show, with 46 Points.

Never seen the footing quite so wet and putting on the greens was like throwing pebbles into the sea at lyme regis - depended on how many hops the ball got.

Jamie Parkhouse had great judgement of distance and effectively threw the ball to the exact pin distance and it always stopped where it landed, usually an inch into the ground.  Keith was always thereabout on the occasions that Jamie needed help, including the classic Por Favor on 18th.

We had one period of rain that lasted 20 minutes which soaked many to the skin.
