Weekend Update

22nd October 2022

From Bim Morfitt:-So sorry to hear this, such a lovely bloke. I am having a few troubles at the moment, but, nothing like Ray, I have my final lot of tests and X-rays on the 1st of November, and hope to be back sometime after that, as before so sorry to hear about Ray, knew him when he worked for Bass breweries, so sad, but unfortunately old age don't come alone, if you are in touch with Ray please give him my best wishes.

Sorry the Blog seems to be all doom & gloom these days....

I have finally had to call it a day, been diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. Having not played a full round for the last 3 years. I miss all the friends I have made since joining the club in 1969 -, 53 Years ago !

 regards to all Ray Gudge

Windwhistle Club Captain, low handicapper and ornithologist - well he fed the birds up there anyway.  Ray was Mr. Golf - always a stickler for the rules and played everything straight down the line. Involved with Somerset Golf and with his contacts in the brewery trade - was very generous with sponsor prizes for Charity fund raising.

..And it's Goodbye Mrs Robinson

many of us attended the funeral yesterday to support Bert Robinson as he said goodbye to his Wife of 62 years.

JKP. Alan D, Ted & Judith, Dickie & Jenny, Nick & Rosemary, Stu & Mauree n, J-Mac

were all there to represent the Golfing part of his life and of course many social gatherings.

Marian was also a Lady Golfer a few years ago and still remembered by some.

As funerals go, it was a very good one and with a proper Vicar and Hymns - a rarity these days. Rev Georgina Vye did an excellent job of making it personal, as Members of Bert's Family stepped forward to pay tribute. 2 Daughters, 1 Son and 6 Grandchildren, and counting were all in attendance, plus many from the local Community, Bridge Club, U3A etc.  Marian was an excellent Piano Player and the star attraction of many Family Parties.

Bert & Marian first Met in 1958 at a Social Dance in Peterborough. As Marian arrived, she saw the tall & super-fit Bert standing there..with a pair of Rugby-Boots tied around his neck..love at first sight.

We heard many stories of their early life. One day, mid-winter, they were out on Bert's Aerial Hunter Bike and returned shivering to their Caravan in Norfolk and it was like an Iceberg. Marian demanded a Cuppa but they were thwarted by frozen taps. Then they remembered they had put a hot-water bottle in the bed before going out.  So they emptied the water into the kettle and had a brew !

It was back to the Caste Hotel in Taunton where Bert was in very relaxed and social mood ( think the Family may have drugged him) as the Tea & Coffee with Buffet graduated into a little 'session' with the bar close by. Dickie started with a G&T in a large fishbowl glass - then returned to the posh bar and berated the Barman " Are you sure you put any Gin in there ?" - and switched to Red Wine !

The chosen charity was Dementia UK - so I will not dwell on the ending for Marian and the Family as this horrible disease dominated the final months of this really close family which will offer Bert great support in the immediate future.

Thanks to all of you that attended

- it really does make a difference

 you know !

Tony Stenhouse News

Thanks for asking for an update  Clive .  I have been transferred to the BRI

in Bristol awaiting a new valve for my lower left ventricle through

the balloon method.   The procedure is a few days away and I am waiting

patiently. I’ve been in hospital since August and two spells before

that in June and July I can’t tell you how I’m looking forward to

coming up to see you all. God willing Fingers crossed Tony

Funny how a guy called StentHouse can't remember the name of the balloon method !

 TUESDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2022

HOME V ENMORE

A very busy Tuesday up at the Club, with the Lopen debating Society in their bright yellow shirts were late teeing off as they overran their Team selection meeting. The tee was then jam-packed with 32 Seniors ready to start the final Home Match of the season against a very friendly Enmore Team.

First time playing the new layout and with crib-board greens ( after hollow tining) - the Home Team certainly had an advantage.

JKP was paired up with Mr England and we had the rare distinction of being the 'worst winners' - going to the last hole 1 up and every chance of halving the match until Paul put his 3rd shot near the pin to win the hole and give us a 2-Up win.

We still had to collect the Dinner Money

Mr Cording playing his 2nd shot to xx Green from xx Fairway...after a hefty left-hook off the  xx Tee.

I'm sure we can expect a very warm reception on 28th October over at the beautiful Enmore Park
