Tuesday 4th October 2022

Tonight's social evening starts with Meet & Drinks 6:30pm, Presentation 7:00pm, Buffet dinner 7:30pm followed by live entertainment.

Sunday PM- Just heard the sad news of the passing of Mrs Marian  Robinson , Wife of Bert of Course. We know Marian has had a long struggle with illness over the past couple of years. All of us who knew Marian will remember her as a Lady full of fun and ever-present at any Seniors Social Event.

Seen here after Celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversay. Hope this is appropriate Bert and our thoughts are with you and your Family.

A lovely Lady.

Not sure if you want to put this on the blog, a lot of people think their energy bills will be no more than £2,500 per annum.

Like many, I thought there was confusion by the energy cap which came into force today the 1st of October. To clarify, the figures below relate to the unit price of gas and electricity. The cap does not apply to the amount you use.

If you are on a fixed rate tariff, it does not apply to you.

I don’t think many will find their annual bill for energy as low as £2,500.

Electricity

£0.34 per/kWh
 Daily standing charge: £0. 46

 Gas

£0.10 per kWh
 Daily standing charge: £0. 28

Headlines say "Total War" - as Tivertoni Bandito wins El Cuppo del Mondi and £150.00  Prize Money for being the only Player to correctly fill out his score card for a Yellow-Ball Discard Scramble off 85% allowance and with preferred lies and forwarding his Card via WhatApp directly to Adjudicator without using a Group Address- all other entrants were disqualified for various misdemeanors.
When Interviewed by El Sporto, Senior Ian was modest in victory and simply said " I owes it all to Cricket Seniors ( sic) for all the bollockings ( no translation avail)- and Disqualifications . Also to Jim Lauchlan for sending me the navigation plan as I was supposed to be playing in Madrid but ended up in this Ole-Hampton  local comp, which  was so much easier.

Warm welcome to New Member Tony Andrews & Wife Stephanie who have moved into Lopen from Eastbourne in Sussex where he was Director of an Engineering Firm until Retirement.
Baptism of Fire in the Roll-up as his Tee Shot on 16th ( where we started) shot right and was never seen again. But he recovered  by the 18th to score 4 Points to keep his namesake Chris Andrews a little happier.

The Andrews Brothers seen here - Tony comes to us from The Royal Eastbourne Golf Club so be sure to say hello if you see him around.
All Chris A was saying all the way round was
" I wonder if Chris Basterfiled is missing me "

This Year the Cyder Cup will be played Wednesday 19th Oct 4BBB, Friday 21st Foursomes & Monday 24th Singles. Sign up on the sheet on the notice board.

Talk about lots of fun - please think about joining us on Tuesday Night, 4th October for a Social Night and a chance for our Ladies to mingle once more.

Already approaching 40 , a full night of entertainment for just a Tenner - including food and Music - We'll grab a spot for Prize Giving so those that won silverware in James Siabi Year & Mark Cording Year can be presented with their Trophies. I'm sure we'll have a raffle ( Prizes Welcome) and a couple of fun elements. The Club is generously giving us the Room for Free and paying for the Music. Very Casual, no posh frocks - Irish Bingo
18:30 for Buffet at 19:00 - entertainment until 22:00 & Bar Closes at 23:00.

It would be great to welcome  some of you we haven't seen for a while. Search for "Somerset Golf Captains"  to see full results.

Something you May wish to put on the blog, Alan Chance and myself recently played at the Somerset Captains Autumn meeting at Orchardleigh golf club near Frome.

With great weather and fast greens scoring was good,  but some solid play from Alan and me being there at the helm we carded a score of 45pts to win the event.

Many thanks Martin.

Seniors Committee Meeting
21 Sep 2022

Convened by Captain after Roll-Up - ( thanks for allowing us to go out first) - Much on the Agenda and here are the snippets .

  • Seniors Dinner - Captain off to St Lucia Mid Nov so  ended up with date of Friday 25th November - so get those posh-frocks ready Ladies.
  • Seniors AGM - Wed 23rd November, 14:00 but straight after Roll-Up.
  • Seniors Prize Giving - Past 2 Captains ( James & Mark) - never got the Chance so idea is to complete  a double ceremony on Tues Oct 4th at the Buffett & Music Night organised by Katie & the Club - so you'll finally get your hands on that Trophy you won - but it may only be for a few minutes.
  • Then got into position of captain & vice captain - and the reluctancy for members to take on the role for various reasons. One very clever Committee member then outlined a possible solution, to split up the duties of Captain on a formal basis - so he can have a normal life and take his holidays and have a family Life. See Flow Chart below - which may have a few tweaks before finalised. The Member also mentioned names for all those involved in running the various sub-sections - but with the Captain always in overall charge.  This person also added, that if this were adopted he would consider becoming Vice Captain with immediate effect.  In a flash , 9 hands were raised in support and the plan was adopted and would be formally presented at the AGM. We'll let the Captain announce any further details.

Lots of discussions within those groups, such as the 4 Opens that we Run - under the new Club Rules, where they deal with all the money - and is it worth us continuing on this basis ?

Lots more chatter about Tee Times for Seniors & further squeeze from the Club, Scheduling of Friendlies clashing with Avalon, Somerset Bowl & Knighton Heath.  DQ on Cards - do we start to get Tougher ? - closer relations with the Ladies, Cheaper cost of Seniors Friendlies,  and so much more .

Seniors Open Texas - I (JKP) was asked to raise the issue of 'Handicap Limit' that was imposed for the recent event. Max Playing Handicap of 28 -  but no matter what the Maths did ( 25%, 20%, 15%, 10%) - a further limit if 12 was applied.

This had several effects that basically ruled out the value of any Team using a High Handicap Player.
See full results on Opens page, but you'll see a long list with 12 Shot allowance all at the bottom.

Aldridge team, for example were all clipped at 28 individually ( Mick dropped 8) - then their calculated Handicap was dropped from 24 to the 12 max.
At other end of the scale PSF was included in a Team as a 25 handicapper - but they could have replaced him with a 16 handicap and kept the same allowance. Same for Stuart Pope team.

Clever ones were the ones that engineered a double figure allowance based on handicaps without using an over 20 handicapper.

It was noted by Committee for future consideration, re-enforced by some calculations that Quinny had done on the results. JW had said 12 Limit was used as it appeared on others in Golf Empire. Matter as yet unresolved.

Now we just have to work out who won the Trophies, where they all are etc - Nick Hill made up a fantastic Folder with dates, names & pictures but Covid sort of screwed things up. Chris G has the book and as many trophies he could find and Roger D has done some chasing. So if you could help us with who won what and the whereabouts of any Trophies it would be much appreciated.
Dave looking Coy after being presented with a rather special award from the Odd Balls Golf Society

Tough to make out wording but Dennis assured me it was for the most fake heart attacks...

Although it was a Qualifier - it was done as a roll-Up so much more of a buzz in the Clubhouse as everyone awaited the dreaded 'out-last'  call. ..but it was much more fun and enabled those like me, with medical issues at home to play in a Quyalifier as I have been unable to confidently book anything for 2 Months. Around 55 Played in the Qualifier as John Sweet cleaned up in Div 3 - He had the privilege of Danny D marking his card. John took 20 strokes over the first 4 holes for 12 Points - Danny took 1 less stroke for just 6 Points , as Danny handed over the card he commented
" I've got no more lead in my Pencil" - and we'll leave it there.....

Such is the life of a Seniors Golfer, that when it comes to announcements of Births, Deaths & Marriages - there is one that always dominates ...
Such as Today when we have just been informed of the passing of Mrs Rachael Hunt on Monday after a long battle with Cancer. Phil Hunt , who we all know and love has had his own battles of late and we wish him all the best in dealng with this latest sad blow.

Thursday 15th Sept
Victor Lloyd GANE

3 of us attended Victors Funeral on Thursday, along with 7 Family members and 30+ Friends from Stoke Sub Hamdon .  Yet another non-religious ceremony conducted by a celebrant.  We hadn't seen Victor for a couple of Years as he had been quite ill.
He made it to 93, having mastered the Clarinet aged 91, under the name of Acker Vic, then the Saxaphone aged 92  under the name of Saxon Vic. His Wife Jackie passed away in 2019. They had 4 Boys, 10 Grandchildren and 1 Great G/C.
Vic was schooled in Devizes Grammar School and then off to university.  He was Deputy Head in Cornwall then Head Teacher in an Army School in Dortmund, along with Gareth Jones - another Golfer.  He completed National Service in Egypt with the 3rd National Canal Builder Regiment,  Vic then returned to Stanchester School in Stoke Sub-H where he was Head again from the 1970's until retirement. He met Jackie down in Plymouth and they were married for 63 Years.  4 Sons, Neil, Mike, Tim and John. Only Mike was at the funeral as the others couldn't make it - which seemed a real shame for such a loving Dad . We heard a lot about Vic via a Video compilation which was very good and showed how he was a much-loved Grandad - just a pity they did not attend from Australia, Hong Kong or the Philippines. For that reason, I didn't bother with the wake on Ham Hill - and both Nick George & Alan Davis headed for home anyway - but I appreciated not being there alone as Vic was one of the nicest persons you could ever wish to meet.

They closed with a Poem, which captured Vic's sense of humour and his ever-smiling face which brightened up our Roll-Up for so many Years.

Feel no guilt in laughter, he’d know how much you care.

Feel no sorrow in a smile that he is not here to share.

You cannot grieve forever; he would not want you to.

He’d hope that you could carry on the way you always do.

So, talk about the good times and the way you showed you cared,

The days you spent together, all the happiness you shared.

Let memories surround you, a word someone may say

Will suddenly recapture a time, an hour, a day,

That brings him back as clearly as though he were still here,

And fills you with the feeling that he is always near.

For if you keep those moments, you will never be apart

And he will live forever locked safely within your heart.

Seniors Open - 4Ball Texas Scramble

CST Seniors once more held their popular Texas Open and welcomed over 40 Visitors from Clubs far & Wide.

Captain & his support Team were up at the crack of dawn to set up, with Quinny in the Brains  Dept setting up his Results verification & Display system to take care of the tricky calcs involved, with the Visitor only being separated on the back 6 holes for the 2 Top Teams  who both had a nett 52.
Full results posted in Seniors Open Page

We started with a CLOSED COURSE due to the correctly forecast low cloud & rain so a 1 hour delay was imposed by the Club.
View from Clubhouse window

JKP & Roger Hinds were 2 spare players - both called into action straight away as the casualties appeared.   David Asquith was up early but looking a little subdued. He then soon realised all was not right and departed for home to have his worrying 'Chest Pains' investigated.   So JKP was placed in Team 1 with Dennis , Jim & Ian.

David reports this morning that 'It was a false alarm' - so all is well.

Plenty of raffle prizes arriving and cakes for the half-way house. Many thanks. Chris G was another early bird and helped set up the new Seniors Gazebo over by the 10th Hole , It's a great Gazebo, about 5 Metres by 3 metres and one of those easy-erect convertina types - so if you need to hire one for your Garden - why not contact the Treasurer who may allow you to rent it for a reasonable price.

Team from Fingle Glen - Bronze Medal with fine score of 54

Leader board nearing the end   with stunning 47 from Captain Mugwash & his Pirates !

Farmer Bob, with Roger, Rod & Robert held the lead for an hour, with 50  which looked unbeatable, 18 Under-Par with 8 Birdies !

But then this card came in...14 Birdies , Three '2's' and an amazing display of power golf.

2nd Place Taunton Team - nett 52 and just pipped on back-6 holes

First team out in the Fog and rain - terrible conditions and on return demanded a 10 Shot Courtesy Handicap " Pathfinder" bonus - but Adjudicator took a considered look at the Score Card  and replied "Even if I gave you and extra 10, you'd STILL be out of the Money - so enjoy your Dinner ""

Nice Day's Work I'd Say

Other Prizes were for Best Home team
Rog, Bob, Bob & Rod £ 160
( Captain won best overall and you can only win 1 Prize)

Runners-Up Home  £100
Martin, Peter, Mike W & Keith Hunt
see rule 3 - 1st & 2nd had already won prizes.

Best Away Team
£160 Michinghampton
Runners Up taunt & Pick  £100

See below update on leader board

Talk about rules - can you answer this one ?
16th Hole, JKP on green so marks it on greenside marker ( easy as we were first team out)
. Jim was just off green and needed 1 more drive ( have to have 4 each)...

So, could we mark 1 ball as NTP and chose a different ball to play out the hole and credit Jim with a drive.

Asked 11 people and got 43 different answers - Is NTP a separate Comp / Sweep

please discuss so Chris can define on Roll-Up format page , think Captain  is in the 'Yes'  camp as he says NTP decision is separate to getting Drives completed.

The Raffle raised up to £20,000 as they say in those stupid adverts...
..and I hope there's a Blue mac in there somewhere...

..anothere casualty on the day was Jamie Parkhouse, who went down with Covid - Jamie was happy to come up & play - but wiser heads substituted him with Roger Hinds..

Dore , Load, Evans & Parmiter some good Golfers but just 3 shots out of the money with Nett 55

Ladies on duty running the halfway hut....but who scoffed all those sausage rolls before the Visitors got a chance ?

Chris G was out early to assist putting up our brand new Gazebo. Nice and easy to erect as one of the concertina types, but a few challenges.   One of the corners would not click into place so we had to cut a wooden peg from the hedge. JKP later took frame apart and found spring clip inside Leg had been pushed inside. Using Garden Wire & cunning managed to extract it and reinsert correctly.

Next found we only had 4 pegs to secure it, so used on guy ropes - which did not have tensioners ( now purchased by JKP) = also added 4 extra strong steel pegs to secure into Legs as well as Guy Ropes.   All now packed away ready for next use.

..also bought a new Mallet to go with package.

Hi John, would it be possible for you to put the following on the blog. I have a Hill Billy electric golf trolley which I no longer need. It is in good workable condition, but now requires a little TLC. The battery has been little used since new and always kept fully charged, but obviously cannot be guaranteed. It comes with a battery charger.

I would like to give all of this free to someone who is prepared to make a donation to the Captain’s charity (Prostate Cancer).

Best regards, Ted Bryden.

Hi John
I thought I'd better tell someone at the club that I'm on my 3rd spell. I've been in from
June5-11.  July3~28th and August 13 and I'm still in Yeovil hospital
The problem is fluid on the lungs caused by heart failure    They are trying to get the balance right between getting the fluid off without damaging the kidneys    They are hoping to succeed so I go home later this week. I hope to improve so that I can visit the club mid September when it will be my 89th birthday
Good luck to you all
Tony

I've had another consultation and they now say my kidneys are much better and I may be able to have the balloon job after all
See you all soon

Dear John,

Further to our call last week I can now confirm that the funeral of Victor Gane will take place at the Yeovil Crematorium (Bunford Lane, BA20 2EJ) at 1200pm on Thursday 15th September. This will be followed by light refreshments at the Prince of Wales, Ham Hill, Stoke-sub-Hamdon.

If you are unable to attend the in-person, may I refer you to the below link for the live screening of the funeral service.

May I again thank you for being a kind friend to my father. We all enjoyed reading the Windwhistle Seniors updates and the amusing pics and comments that you posted. My Dad also truly valued all the friends he made at the golf club and the wonderful fun and laughter that you all shared. My thanks to all.

It would be much appreciated if you could kindly circulate the news and the date of my Father's funeral.

 Respectfully / Neil Gane

What is the difference between NR and NS ?

Gentlemen, I gather that the rain spoilt a few rounds today and the weather forced several to abandon their rounds and walk in.
Unfortunately those who did so, did not record the score for those holes correctly.

If you start a hole and do not complete it by holing out, for whatever reason, the score on your card is NR. (Not Recorded/ No Return)

If you do not start a hole for whatever reason, the score on your card is NS. (Not Started)

The difference in terms of adjusted scores for handicap purposes is huge. For example those who abandoned their rounds after 8 holes, and recorded 10 x NS would have received 10 net pars to their adjusted scores. Those who recorded 10 x NR would have received 10 net double bogies, a difference of 20 strokes to the adjusted handicaps.
Please be mindful of the difference between NR and NS for future rounds.

They think it's all over...It is Now !!!!

Dear Member ,

As you are probably aware, we have been planning and preparing for our Course Remodelling Project for a long period of time now and after some recent discussion we will be moving forward with this from Monday 1st August 2022.

This means we will be closing holes 8, 9 and 10 for the remodelling to begin and moving on to the 3 new holes from 7am Monday morning.

The green surfaces have had rabbit scrapes removed and areas re-seeded and are looking good. Approaches have been heavily watered and fertilised and have also filled in well. However there are still some small areas with poor coverage, which will be marked as GUR from which relief can be taken. With the closing of 8, 9 and 10, this means the green keeping team will have less areas to focus on and therefore can concentrate more time into getting these areas up to speed as soon as possible.

We also have an additional green keeper joining our team later in August, to help move the course forward throughout the remodelling project.

Golfers with GPS watches and devices, we ask for your patience as we have contacted the relevant companies and they are unable to make any changes to the layout until after this date, so for an unknown period of time (hopefully short) your devices will be synced to the old layout.

If you have any questions regarding the changeover, please feel free to get in touch.

Thanks for your patience with this, and your continued support of the club.

See you again soon.

Kind Regards,

Alex Hill

General Manager

Hole 1 – That nasty Dog-Leg and OOB becomes a 400 Yard Shot straight down the middle to a beautiful new elevated green with spectacular views towards Wales and Glastonbury Tor.  Still SI 5

Hole 2 – Nice little 275 Par 4 with dog-leg left to old 1st green, from a brand new tee protected by fencing from 1st hole approach shots.  SI 17

Holes 3, 4 , 5 & 6 unchanged but all numbers up by 1.

so Hole 3 was Hole 2 etc...

Hole 7 – from old 6th Tee to a lovely little Green, sparklingly  new & tempting after a kick-right and 335 Par 4.  SI 9

Hole 8- Tester for that little wedge, as a 120 Yard shot to the old 6th green awaits you. Brand new Tee in use and promises to be a busy little triangle of golf. SI 13

In the Winter, when we lose West part of course periodically, we’ll now have an 11-hole Couse without crossing any roads.

Hole 9 – Unchanged layout from when it was the 7th, but with a lower stroke index – Need a new location for the halfway Hut at the end of it – time to eat that banana.

Holes 10, 11 & 12 – Unchanged but all numbers down by 1.

so Hole 10 was hole 11 etc

Hole 13 – Brand New 115-yard par 3 with green guarded by new bunkers. May look easy but errant shots that are long or right will be OOB and anything left will be lost !

Holes 14 through 18 are all unchanged as you head for home and some welcome refreshment.  Hole 15 drops to SI 2 and Hole 18 to SI 6.

Do we see change of rule for Fixed sprinkler heads ?- getting relief for putting even though off the actual green.

No Play Zones - have they taken over from GUR -

With estimates of 3 to 5 years - regrettable many of us  will never see them played, so let's enjoy our new course.

For you younger ones, visit the Club Website and view the Course Flyover of the proposed new holes after the landfill, it is rather fancy looking.

Covid Updates:-

Roger Withers: HI Dave thanks for enquiring, I’ve had all the normal symptoms, a bit like having a mild dose of proper flue, it might be to early say but after the weekend, I am hoping I’m looking at the tail end, I am feeling a little better and very fortunate nothing serious. Looks like the vaccine is doing its job

Edmondo : Slight improvement but still positive
Good for the diet
Do not wish to anybody
Thanks should be ok next week
I hope so
Take care

Rod Young: It is like a very nasty cold - let’s hope it stays that way. It did for Sue.

It also supports your warning on the blog. We know too many in the same situation at this time. Neither are they connected.

Will this be the last time we play the current course from white tees?

Friday 8th July 2022

Wed 6th July 2022

We have decided to delay the changeover to the new course layout. While the greens and tees surfaces themselves are generally progressing well, we still have some work to do on the approaches and fringes.

At some point in the next few weeks, we will of course make the transition to the new layout. Whilst our green keeping team are doing their best to produce 3 new holes which are close to the standards of the current holes, realistically this will take some time. There will therefore be a period of adjustment and we ask for your continued patience and support.

We will keep you updated in the weeks ahead.

Kind Regards,

Alex Hill

Covid Alert

David Asquith

John do you have contact details for Brian Marsh, Jerry Stephens and Terry Hackling - my playing partners on Friday? Felt rubbish after golf yesterday and this morning and have tested positive for Covid. If not can you put a message on the blog as they don’t use WhatsApp. I think they need to be aware. Thanks.

Brian aware & OK; Jerry aware & OK;

Bob Dennett latest:-

Lungs have improved, still got an infection, but improving all the time. Won’t be long now hopefully. Cheers Bob

PS Doc recommends a 20 handicap Minimum.

Think Rod Stevens is Roger Stone.

No more can we scorn at Stuart's Cider offered at the half-way house in our Opens - it has finally been recognised at the Devon County Show in Honiton as the region's finest. Thanks to ace reporter 'RS' for spotting and sampling the brew.

Couple of shots of the Captain, fully recovered from his marathon  and still gathering the many £100's in sponsorship....

Hmmm....I know this Pennisetum villosum tends to grab a little -
so a full blooded 58 Degree methinks !

Flag please Barrie.....and you'd better call Dave's boys as there could be some carnage...

Barrie & JKP had the ignominy of been whupped by Dave playing alone in Medalford ( off 85%) and being 5 ahead at the half-way point....

Note There's no Roll up on Monday 11th July and the July Medal has been rescheduled for Wed 13th

Wed 29th June 2022

It didn't start very well, as Bob was heard to say "here we flipping go again" -
after an NR on the 1st....
but 13 Points on the four Par 3 Holes gave him enough to squeeze out The BranchManager

Admired Dickie Hall's persistence on the 7th - by Carding a 10  - but please remember if you can't score in a Stableford no need to putt out and it can make a slow round, as was today.

Heavyweights Martin & Peter polished off their opponents by the 11th Hole in the Semi-Final of the Summer KO Pairs. They now have to take on Boatman Beale & Sir Clive of Sardinia  in the Finals
Peter & Jan have been cleaning up of late in Mixed Doubles - scoring an embarrassing 50 Points in a recent 4BBB Comp to take the spoils at a local course.
Martin commented - "my swollen ankles were no handicap today as each swing produced 3-whooshes, distracting the opposition"

Nice Bench on 15th Remembering Mike.

That's Thursday- hope someone can represent the Seniors.
Nice to Have an Order of Service if you can get one for our Memorial Days.

enjoy our last 7 days on 8,9,10 as the gates go up to form site entrance as 2-Year landfill and subsequent re-modelling begins in earnest...

It only took them a couple of hours to bury a new septic tank for the site-office toilets....

Take a look on Club Website, on Golf Tab for a fly-over over the layout of the 3 new holes - it does look rather special and let's hope we live long enough to see it.

Tuesday 28th June

Captain's Birthday Challenge

Play 69 Holes - Walking

Thanks to all of the Support team that were with Dave every step of the way -  Roger, JKP, David A, Barrie, Martin, Gordon Ian & Chris...and The Clubhouse Team for keeping him fed.

As expected with Royal Navy Veteran's  - The 2 Non-Commissioned Officers , JKP & Jolly Roger were on parade at 04:30 waiting for The Captain to make his appearance.

Dave Duly arrived and we loaded up the Club Buggy ( Thanks Alex & CST) - and were Teeing off just after 05:00 on a chilly morning with a bit of a nippy breeze. Roger was up ahead on his Buggy, JKP in Club Buggy carrying Dave's Clubs and 2 Hampers full of snacks.

Dave started 5,5,5,5,5 and finished first 18 ( of 69) in 79 Gross and what was the time as we walked off 18th...Just 07:15 - around 2 Hours 8 Minutes. That was not by any 'speed' factors, just by minimizing how far Dave walked, heading direct from tee to green, tending the pin etc - but he certainly intends to walk every step of the way and definitely no sneaky lifts on the buggy.

Comfort break in Clubhouse, then back down 1st ( 19th) by 07:30 . After Amen Corner JKP departed at 08:15 as David Asquith & Barrie Heath took over. Jolly Roger carried on for another 18 in his Personal  Buggy. Dawn in the Clubhouse had supplied bacon butties to keep us going - thanks Dawn ( and a nice donation)

Still have Gordon Brent, Ian Fielder, Rod Young, Martin Bargery to take over later with Chris G and Ian H  at the back end to see him home.

Crazy Dave was at Vivary Monday ( Mugged 5.5 to 0.5) - Individual Wed, Avalon Thurs etc - but reemember he is doing it all for Bowel cancer UK - if you feel like donating - wqe can put cash in his box on your behalf - just tell us how much ( which we'll put in tin) -  and we'll get from you at some later date.

Just had Round 2 Completed - 80 Shots inc OOB - 24,250 steps so far - That was 2 Hours 20 Mins and just 10:09.   Gordon Brent & Ian Fielder + Barry for Round 3

So if Round 3 is 11:00 to 14:00 - his final Round will be over before 17:00  - which will be amazing if he keeps it up.

Barrie reports at 11:15 - 41 Holes completed - so Round 3 will finish well before 14:00 so I'm heading up for 12:30 - if nothing else I can eat some of the Scotch Eggs & Sausage Rolls...

Monday 27th June 2022

But he will have a Support Team - see below - thanks to all those that appended name to list.

JKP has keys to a Club Buggy, that will be available from 05:00 ( Alex has promised) - so we can load up Dave's Clubs and some snack & drinks to keep everyone going.

As you can see from the above - shift times are a little bit loose - as basically we don't know how long each round will take and how fast Dave will be as he nears the 20 Mile points...

I think Roger Stone & JKP can pick up the early shift through till past 08:00 when 1st 18 holes should be finishing.  Alex has kindly allowed us to swap buggies as they run flat . So if we have more than 1 on shift - they can assist ball spotting etc or just fill out the Holes Log we hope to keep so that we can do a nice report on this Mammoth event.

Just added Sir Clive to the Sponsor Sheet £1 for every Nett Par - thanks Clive.

Another Mystery sponsor has offered £5 per Birdie Round 1, £6 Round 2, £7 Round 3 and £10 Round 4 - Make him pay Dave !

From Pro Shop

Hi David,

I hope you are well. After quite a few occasions now where the Seniors have not been using all of their allocated tee slots and hearing some comments from other morning-playing members who are struggling to fit in games around your blocks (especially on a Friday morning) we have decided to make the following changes as of Friday 24th June.

Early Slots on Monday and Wednesday. 8:08am, 8:16am and 8:24am.

On a Friday, they will be reduced to 8:08am and 8:16am.

 Late slots will be:

Monday will be reduced: 9:04am – 10am.

Wednesday will remain the same: 9:04am – 10am.

Friday will be reduced. 9:04am – 9:44am.

As mentioned previously, we will continue to review these slots going forward and please ask that you continue to give us your roll up sheet’s three times a week, so we are able to review this accurately. I hope you can see that this is a reasonable decision, as only twice in the last month have you exceeded your 10am slot on any day , both of which were on trophy/monthly competition days. Roll up sheet’s attached.

On a couple of Friday’s we have had numerous wasted slots, despite lots of members wanting to play, which is why we have made the above change.

If on certain days for monthly comps, you believe you’ll need 1 or 2 extra slots, please contact myself and can add on for you if required. Please try and steer away from running the monthly competitions on a Friday though where possible.

Please pass on the message to the Seniors.

Take care and see you again soon.

 Kind Regards,

Matt Contreras

Wednesday 22nd June 2022

..Days get shorter from today....

Thanks to David Asquith for adding name to list of 'Helpers' for  Captain's Marathon next Tuesday,

and from Sir Clive himself...

In Sardinia, sorry I won’t be around on the 28th.

HOWEVER.

The objective I think is to raise money for your charity. Can I propose a sign up sheet is put on the main page of the Blog and updated daily.

Seniors to sponsor £1 for every net par David makes on his 69 hole attempt.

Put me down, hope it doesn’t cost me £69!

LESS THAN A WEEK TO GO!

 Good luck

 Clive

Friendly v. Honiton, Monday 20th June

Our once a year Friendly fixture with Honiton was away this year, played on a very sunny and warm day. Honiton were very hospitable and all involved had a good day. We had Fish for the main course of the post match meal, which was quite unusual. It proved very tasty and was wolfed down by the Team

 Mugridge & Leigh                 Halved

Heath & Gardener                   Halved

Lauchlan & Paoloni               Lost 1 Down

Hunt & Spencer Farr             Won 3&1

England & Stone                   Won 4&3

Cording & Siabi                     Lost 2&1

 NTP                                      Barrie Heath

Match result                                      3 - 3

Away at Honiton..That is Mighty Impressive !

Avalon League v. Oake Manor, Tuesday 21st June

The league team turned out at CSTGC and delivered an outstanding performance on a lovely golfing day. All teams won, with the closest match being the first with Dowell and Wandless winning 2&1. The teams of Mugridge & Cording, Hinds & Gardener and Clarke & Lauchlan were all 6 up when they won. The rearguard of Hildred & Blackburn had to go a bit further, winning 4 & 3.

This result garnered 12 points in the Avalon League and we sit in 3rd place in the League with games in hand (mainly at home) over those above us.

Monday 20th June

Blog has been asked to publish Cancellation of Seniors Open  (4BBB) on Wed 6th July due to circumstances beyond our control.

Now a request for YOUR help !

The Club has kindly offered us  a Buggy for use on the day - but we now need a few drivers and maybe spotters if you fancy stretching your legs.   Captain Dave will walk the whole way, which could be well over 20 Miles - so carrying Clubs is just too much, so we'll use the Buggy to transport them and carry food/drinks etc to support Skipper.  Jolly Roger and JKP will support the first few hours, but it would be great  if you could append your name on the list below ( posted in Clubhouse) - to drive Buggy and come up and support him in other ways - once again - It's all for Bowel Cancer UK .

If you think this is a pain in the arse...try the treatment for BC - which is not uncommon in our generation I'm afraid.

Welcome back to Chris Gingell who has resumed his Results Co-ordination and updates.

It's interesting to view results sometimes, was tickled to see Dougie at the Top fail on 11th with Zero...but Phil 'In The' Hunt - scored 4 Points with a Bogey 5...getting 3 shots gave him a Nett Eagle !!!

Just left CANNINGTON with every pair querying their opponents handicaps.

Not the first time and probably not the last.

RESULT

CORDING & PAOLONI.  LOST. 3 &2.

ASQUITH & LAUCHLAN.            HALVED

STONE & BAKER.            LOST.  6&4

GARDENER & WANDLESS.       WON 2&1

HOLMES & LEIGH.        LOST.     4&3

PEARCE & HONE.            LOST.     3&1

4 1/2 to 11/2 to CANNINGTON

I tried not to be churlish but I may have mentioned their handicaps in my speech.   It just slipped out four times.    In the tradition of Captains winning nearest the pin, I did manage a good shot to win the wine.     Mark C

JKP picked up Mark & Martin en-route Cannington, at Mark's beautiful brand-new home in Ilton. 450 Years Younger than his old one, 15 fewer bedrooms, 5 less acres - but sets him up for a quieter life.

As Mark said about Handicaps - Mike Hone tried his very best against our pairing and we managed  ( yes I helped once or twice) - to get us to 4 Up on the turn. Then things seemed to change when their 22 handicapper , who had been longest driver by far - turned on the heat and made Par on 12-thro 17 ( and getting shots off Mike) - and there was nothing we could do as the lead dwindled away.

Mike challenged me to post a picture of my first shot of the day.....which ended within a club length of my feet as a mighty whoosh with the driver imparted the merest 'brush' onto the ball - forcing it to leave the tee-peg and gently roll forward.

Much was said about the catering at Cannington - which is all under the control of Bridgwater College. No reception Butty or Coffee, 1 course Dinner - served 4 at a time ( we were last and an hour behind Captain to eat) -They are still in Covid-Land with Bar screened off and only 1 person allowed in Kitchen - all for the princely sum of £15.00. - Members had apologised to us as there were no showers or change of clothes for Dinner.  Luckily the rain stayed away and it was a nice short drive home with no issues.

Note:- Chris Basterfield has chastised me for 5 different ways of spelling Bridgewater / Brigewater / Bridg..oh I give up !

It was thought the town was originally named Brigg, meaning Quay, but the Domesday Book listed the town as "Brugie".

Following the Norman invasion, it was given to Walter of Douai and the area became variously known as Burgh-Walter, Brugg-Walter or Brigg-Walter.

An alternative story believes the town's name was once known as Bridge Walter as in the Bridge of Walter or Bridg-of-Walter.

At some point, the name was eventually shortened to Bridgwater.

Historical records show the town was never spelt as "Bridgewater".

So even if the exact reasons for the spelling Bridgwater are not known, it was never correct to say Bridgewater.

Derek Gardener.    Won    3&2.

Match result Lost   7 games to 3

But Steve Holt had a hole in one on the 4th hole not an easy par 3 and a hole the none of the opponents had seen an ace before, unfortunately nor did Steve as the hole was blind from the tee.

Picture of Holty handing over a very nice bottle of 10 year old Malt to Wareham.   He donated it to their Charity Day on Friday following his HOLE IN  ONE.

it was fortunate that Steve had a few bottles in his bag for such occasions.

Steve replied " It happens so often to me these days I have to be prepared.  Perfectly pressed trousers & shirt, immaculate hair and my best set of teeth fitted - There will probably now be some sort of Street Parade over in Chardstock, and with Muggo away - I may even have a chance to make a speech "

Congratulations to Andy Rowland, Dennis Hussey and especially Derek Gardener for winning their matches.  Derek was forced to play off 5 less shots as handicaps were 17 max, yet still won on an away course by 3&2.

Thank you to all who played, it was a fun day out with no cost at all.

Shame about the result but at least we fulfilled the fixture.

Mark Cording

Start of a very busy week with 12 away at Knighton Heath and the remaining 31 participating in a 3,2,1 Waltz.

Bit of domestic news as we discovered Nobby Hodder had been in Hospital for the past 16 Days ( did nobody miss him?)...rushed in with ultra- low blood pressure and bombarded with tests over many days - one firm diagnosis is Lewy Body Dementia - with more results to come .

Poor old James Siabi was subjected to another break-in , causing damage to his newly installed Double Glazing - and this time they took more items of value _ Passport etc

Valuable Scores from Phanton Pro - John Weir whose notable scores included  4 Points on 4th, 4 Points on 9th and 3 other 3 point holes - but not quite enough to move those teams onto the leader board.

We let Gordon & Co through off 4th and they sounded quite confident - no wonder as they had scored 6,7,2,8 ( 23 Points) on Amen Corner - 10 ahead of the bottom Team and 5 ahead of the nearest Top Team - but threw it all away on the back 9 - dropping 5 points on 10th hole alone.

Payout Calculation by JKP as Chris G & Skipper away having fun.

With my Braces and new shoes...

all my balance problems have disappeared overnight...

Platinum Day 4 -

Hi All

I have decide that my days of golf are over.

My game has deteriorated of late and is an embarrassment to me and those I play with. The only enjoyment now rests with the company it provides.

I will play at Honiton in order to say goodbye and maintain the numbers agreed with Keith.

Thank you all for your patience and encouragement over the time with Eggs.

Best Wishes        Malcolm Roy

Malcolm came to Somerset in 1962 - and his first job on the A30 was to clear the snow outside the Golf Course as a Highway's Engineer. ( it was blocked for weeks) - He's been here all my Golfing Life, and although never wishing to be Captain - has always been involved in Committee of The Seniors Section and more latterly, with The EGGS Section and their very busy Itinerary.

Malcom wrote ::-
Guess who was in charge of clearing the Chard area road network?
Arrived 31st December 1962 1830 hrs Chard Junction not Chard Central as expected. Found snow 12 to 18 inches deep throughout which with two items of luggage proved difficult plus I was dressed for the Train not the Arctic. Proceeded to trudge through snow until a farmer in a Land Rover rescued me at Tatworth Tree and dropped me at the Copper Kettle B&B where the ice never left the inside of the windows for the next 3 months.
The direct labour force in the Chard division were magnificent and under the direction of the Divisional Surveyor Leonard Denman and myself , used what few facilities we had to maintain a flow of traffic on roads and footways. The County were ill prepared for the amount of snow and cold so we had to commission any help we could get from farmers and contractors who were unable to work as normal and were pleased help.
The A30 was closed to traffic on a number of occasions due to drifting snow and when it was opened the snow became sheet ice due to traffic. We had 70 tons of salt in the depot which went nowhere and was used as much on footways in Town as it was on the Roads.

Quite an inauguration for a young engineer but I got to meet a lot of people very quickly.

Malcolm Roy

Malcolm was a stalwart of the Early Birds and organised the early Roll-Up until recently, looking after all the Sign-Up sheets etc

One of those people that every Group Needs - The Engine room.

Thanks Malcolm for all you have done for The Golf Club over many decades.

Look after him Jill !

..I don't normally get to do this for people who are still alive !

Team Sheets are also up for Honiton (20th) & Vivary 27th

Our Captain once again demonstrates his wisdom and courage - he is leaving these shores for a short while, so we will have shorter Roll-Ups until 17th June ( speeches)..his courage is  on display as he and his good lady   MUG1 in the fleet of cars - are off to Bristol Airport on Sunday for an Easy-Jet flight to Greece...our thoughts will be with them !

OK, If you insist.......I'll Fly the Plane...but as I've said before, I'm not actually  that sort of Captain...

Meantime he is concerned that we will manage the hoard of fixtures and games that loom ahead of us and is LOOKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

( I'LL NIP UP CLUB AND SNAP ANY TEAM sheets SO  WE CAN GIVE YOU THE FULL PICTURE)

Mixed Open

John Hi

Thank you for the pictures-they are great.  Nice write up on the blog as well!

Please would you mind to put a small piece on your blog just to thank all the seniors from myself and ladies section for their help in making the mixed open a success.

  John Wandless / Quinny Lawrence

Mark played his 2nd shot on 4th to within 12 inches - for his partner to make an easy-eagle

We were stunned when her Majesty arrived, needed the loo en-route to a tea-party at Bryan Frost's Apartment in Crewkerne.

Quinny-Vision showing Leader Board

Terry feeling guilty for putting Donna into bunker - but she was well up to the task...can you spot the ball  ?

No surprise that The Ladies excelled with their baking efforts once again

another good raffle, all run by Dickie , making a handy Sum for Asthma UK ( Donna) and Dave's Charity somewhat lower down in the body...

As usual, Donna's attention to detail, with little easels for the Prize Envelopes/

Quinny & JW took no prisoners when checking cards - no-one was above reproach....
