2 from 3 Stableford Discard

Note from Matt in Pro Shop

I was wondering if you could put a little note on the seniors blog for me?

We have Mizuno coming on the 22nd March to run a singles competition and we are after a few volunteers to help with marshalling, starting etc.

Any issues, please let me know.

 Take care

We will bring in the following Local Rule for the Senior Section for the foreseeable future:
Flowerbeds around the course will be treated as Ground under Repair. Balls lying in Flowerbeds MUST be dropped at the nearest point of relief.
We have submitted this Local Rule to CST for consideration and for adoption by the Club.

Captain.

Seniors 3 Man Par Bowmaker 07-02-22

Another Buggy Ban due to overnight rain, but still had another very big roll-up as the weather held fair. Farmer Bob braved the walk and managed 18 holes...just !!

Eric Williams led his rag-tag trio with a stellar performance, playing off 26 bagged 6 Pars and a birdie. They pulled ahead of the field on the Par 3 Holes, scoring 6,8,7 & 8 - a total of 29 Points.

Bob Dennett was on a bit of a birdie-fest and it must have felt like a good score as they entered the Clubhouse.

Lots of fun on 1st tee with many errant shots from good players. We smirked when Mark C smashed one through the gap, heading left, cleared 4th and looked to be heading into field aside the 16th fairway...but it was found nicely in 17th Tee and 6 minutes later he was sinking a putt for the 3-points and a nice Par to start with.

This is the first time we have played this exact format and all  most agreed that it could be further enhanced by adding 10th & 15th as Par 5's like we do in a Discard.

Great start for the Phantom-Pro Mr Sweet, 1st shot hit tree and fired onto 4th fairway - recovery shot then hit the big bare Fir on 1st and landed nicely as shown. He did, however,
add another 12 to the score of Danny & Andy

Keith , Bob & Martin were early Clubhouse Leaders..and it was nearly +1 as Keith came very close to an Ace on 2nd , Bob's ball, also pictured was his 2nd.

Couple of points from Gingell Bells:-
  • Reason we don't play 10th & 15th as par 5's is that Club Computer cannot handle this format..but he'll see if the wonderful Mr Lawrence can help,,,

  • Gentle reminder that 3-minutes is all the time you are allowed to look for your ball.

  • Comp was initially set-up with 100% handicaps, which meant the Computer differed from the cards (85%) - please don't mess with your card in order to align - just enter your gross scores as recorded and Computer issues can be resolved later.

Get back here...I've only got 3 Minutes......
"That's nuts...you should have played a Provisional "

Perfect Chip from Bob on 3rd Hole..always follow the rainbow...

Can we swap Pearce for Danny ?

Ian & Jim up13th...first time walking 18 Holes and nae pasties today...

James claims Hole-in One on 12th

Jeremy, David, Ian & Clive on 15th...
their home run of just 15 Points on last 4 holes was 7 less that
Peter & Co and had they matched them they would have won today.

Passed Jeremy & Co on 10th ..Jeremy was mad as his 2nd shot was pin-high but just off the green

James, Nick & Bob head down the 7th as you can see remnants of earlier rain

3-Ball Scramble

Top 3 Teams, with Handicap Allowance of 14-16 were too much for the 'All-Pro' Team in 4th place with a paltry 6 shots, despite a 64 Gross !

Dickie Hall was playing with a brand new set of Callaways which certainly seemed to have worked, Birdying both 1st & 4th  Par 5 Holes.

Dickie said 'we were on the Green in 2 on the 4th and putting for Eagle, but both Danny & Mark missed the putt after he showed them the line.

Chatting to Dickie Hall on 19th, discussing Alcohol Free Beverages..Dickie related how he had tried them all but they were all horrible. He did, however, have a solution.
After paying £18 for a bottle of Waitrose Gin-Zero - if he added 2-parts Gordons to 1-part Gin-Zero it wasn't too bad.
Ingenious and makes you wonder why they even bothered to invent Tonic a £1 at Litre.

Winter League followed by AGM

2 Captains admiring 'The Windwhistle Trophy' won by them +2 at Burnham - originally presented to The County by Leonard Fisher, one-time best mate of Chris Basterfield...

A very well controlled AGM by the Chairman, John Wandless - gave everyone a chance to speak & be heard, but Stuart Pope had to be handcuffed at one point !

AGM Minutes now fully Published and are factual so replace casual observation made below.

Following are some of JKP Observations and are purely personal and do not necessarily represent the Committee Views. ( we have to write this stuff)

  1. Election of meeting Chairman - John Wandless as you can see.
  2. Election of Senior Section Officers, all pictured plus others such as Blog, Fixtures, Matches, Roll-Up Formats etc etc much the same but with vacancies for Press Reporter and Vice Captain.
    • Retiring Officers, such as Andy Beale, Nick Clark, Bert Robinson, Stuart Pope were thanked for their service.
  3. Apologies for absence - at least 12  14 were read out and much appreciated.
  4. Agreement of minutes of last AGM
    • Bit of discourse on when we last actually had a Meeting so difficult to know what we were agreeing on, so rain-check
  5. Financial report
    • Beautifully presented report by Mr Branchmanager, showing us in a healthy state and some amazing contributions towards our charities, especially Dickie & Jenny's Monthly Raffle which made 4 figues once more - with loud applause  to them.
    • Treasurer had the Annual Fixture Card available for collection ( Prepared by Barrie) - and those of our 131 members that had paid their £3.00 could collect one. Those over 80 had a complimentary one carried to their Chair.
    • Small discussion about raising Fee to £5.00 but no-one could answer the simple question "What for" - so it was not carried.
    • Keith is in the process of transferring our business from the antiquated Nationwide to Nat West so that we can have a Cheque Book and even use BACS.
    • In a final hard-hitting statement , Treasurer reminded members that from Monday if you have not paid your Seniors Membership, no Roll Up money can be won by you.
  6. Past Captain’s Report
    • Mark Cording had a well-prepared speech in which he coverd his period of office, such as Covid, WHS, New Summer Knockout, 4 Opens Turkey Trip, etc etc
    • But the most impact was when he announced that YOU ALL - helped raise....wait for it... £10,000.00 for his SURE Charity - a Sum never seen before and pretty sure we could never match that again.
    • Also mentioned those we had lost in the past Year or so, Mike Burt, Ron Sutherland, Cliff Medcraff, Rod Drayton.
  7. Plans for the forthcoming year
    • Dave Mugridge covered this one, with topics such as the new holes replacing 8,9,10;  Challenge Cup ( Dainton/Sherborne/Knighton); New Charity Day etc
    • Captain also announce on his 69th Birthday he plans to play 69 Holes straight off with sponsorship for how many steps he will take during the feat.28th June.

  8. Formats & Tee times
    • We lost Tee-Times last Year as Club get given start sheet every day to enter on Computer - so we gave them all the evidence they needed to reduce them - we simply were not using them, so hard to argue.  Now the evidence shows that we exceed them most days, so we should get some restored.
    • 2022 will stick to plans of 3-balls on Mon & Wed  , with 4-balls on Fri( I think that's right).
  9. Friendlies & Matches
    • Lots of chats about these  but basically there is a hard-core of about 20 that supply their names when the sheets go up. Why not make it your 2022 resolution that you will sign-up for at least one Match this season - they are great fun, a cheap day-out and within 48 Hours no-one can ever recall who won or lost .
  10. Charity Fundraising
      • Captain told us about his Charity, which is close to his heart, but rather closer to other parts of his body - Bowel Cancer UK - and he intends to hit it hard this year.
      • Big Charity Day is May 8th, 12 Man Teams playing 4BBB
      • Voted to buy replacement Gazebo for halway house.
  11. Social events
    • Plenty of informed debate and individuals from the floor relating why they didn't sign-up for the Seniors Dinner that had to be cancelled through lack of interest.
    • More Pie-Nights, Fish & Chips, Curry - and even a BBQ. Fortunately The Food and Bar Manager  Tim Ackland, ( also a Seniors) was in the Horizons with us and was able to answer questions directly - being very supportive of several suggestions that arose.
  12. Seniors Captaincy
    • This certainly took some time and brought up some interesting issues and barriers, as to why The captain has been unable to secure a Vice-Captain thus far.
    • We cannot survive without a Vice-Captain getting ready to take over the reins for next Year and if anyone would be prepared to take over please let the Captain know.
    • Lots can be done to help in the duties of Captaincy. He already gets Free Membership for his Year ( Thanks Steve) - but he is not chained to every Roll-Up or every Match -plenty of people are able to run day-to day affairs.
    • IPC Mark detailed some of the personal expenses that he incurred in 2021, including supplying wine for NTP in Matches - which I think was voted to be now paid by Seniors , although I know vote was tight .

  13. AOB
    • Chairman then went through list of submitted items as requested, but honestly I can't remember a blooming thing..oh yes, just one
    • PSF asked if it was time we increased Roll-Up should catch up with the world and increase Fee for each day to £1.50 . Fair debate, but not much anti- so is was voted in from Monday, so it's now £2.00 for each Roll up including the Birdie option
I'll stop there and await a plethora of corrections via WhatsApp...By the Way - the Captain asked that more of us get onto WhatsApp- which is a feature on your Mobile Phone. You agree for your Mobile Number to be added to a 'CST Seniors' Group and Captain can quickly message the membership when he needs help, or a player for a Team , changes to Roll-Up, Course Closures etc. He added a plea that the channel was left clear of nonsense. The Application can be used for individuals to chat to each other by selection that person from within the group..only use the Whole Group when for good Golfing reasons. Mike Hone had been issued with 37 Red Cards for abusing it during 2021.

Golf Trophies:-
Captain made an appeal for the return of any you have
at home so we can have a Presentation Day.

JKP suggested we hold it on a Roll-Up,  15-Hole Scramble
followed by Presentations ( 12:30 for 13:00) with a buffet of Chip Butties & Sausages
so we can all sit around in Bar or Horizons, 60 minutes max - and have lunch & a pint.

The Ladies would be welcome to join us if they wished, with Seniors sponsoring a free Sweet ( pudding) for every Lady.

Small Raffle so we could make a few bob for Charity at the same time.

Get the Wife to drop you off in the morning so you are free to enjoy yourself and get a lift home. ( Sorry Ladies, we'll drive next time honest)

Nick Hill CIA -
Cup Investigation Agency

But we can't do anything without those Trophies -you   don't want us to send Nick Hill around do you ?

Blog apologies to Ladies Section for not including pictures of the hardest-working Golfer up there for the past few years, Donna. Love to post a Picture if anyone has one of the 3 Captains we would give it pride of place.

News Update - Chris Gingell is now a full 'Blog Editor' - so I can't be rude about him any more else he will just delete it.

 Dave Mugridge

Captain                                      ———————————————————

From our 2019 Captain

This is a long overdue update on the present position of our sponsored Guide Dog which was the outcome of our Seniors £7500 charity donation in 2019.

The original dog allocated to us 'Willow' went through initial training but unfortunately proved to be unsuitable. This is not unusual as they need very special attributes to make the grade.

Willow has been found a 'Forever' loving home and will enjoy a full life.

Guide Dogs have given us a new pup which we named 'Benje'.

It has been 10 months since we began to follow Benje and although he will be with his Puppy Walker for another 2 - 4 months he is doing really well at this stage.

We have just received his Third Pupdate, just before his birthday, which describes him as confident and self-assured.

I have posted the full report on our notice board for anyone interested.

Peter Spencer-Farr.

Just 2 Rounds to go and getting interesting..If you drop worst score, Edmondo & Co leap    up to 2nd place just a couple behind the leaders...and we are dropping 2 in total.
Love the way this Comp is now working and everyone who Rolls Up gets a game.   Eric did his team proud as he paired up with random partner Steve Holt who after a sticky start was hitting the ball a mile. On 10th Hole he was pin high after 2 shots and missed the birdie by mm.

Ref front page, Richard Holmes has officially announced that he is to Marry the lovely Carol on Tuesday April 12th

Great pair together, always fund-raising, this one was a long run round the South West Coastal Path.
Say hello to Carol if you pop into Boots in Crewkerne...she's on the counter with Grecian 2000 for men, Aging Cream and Hair Restorer...which is obviously where they met.

After Sun hid for the first hour, it became a beautiful day once more and the Personal Buggy Brigade were allowed out to play again....

was playing his shot from....

from behind a tree at the wrong time.

Barrie Heath has the Seniors Card ready to go..send him  an Email and he will send you one, telling you of all the Matches and Comps for the whole Year..£3.00 Seniors Subs must have been paid unless you are over 80.

Wednesday 12th January 2022 - Individual Stableford

After the pea-souper, 15 stalwarts played 11 holes starting from 5th, with rounds being completed in brilliant Winter sunshine. Balls in hat, 2 from 3 Stapleford, £1 per person, winners take all. Scores ranged from 43 to 47 pts, with an outlier of 55 pts, from the team out last, with highlight of 5 strokes between Derek Gardener &  Rob Coombes on 16th, scoring 7 pts...the Captain had to shrug his shoulders and pick up.
The earlies were spotted playing 16/17, having not been removed from the course by the greenkeepers.

Dave Mugridge

Just about made 3 holes when at 10:04 the fog came in and closed it all down for the next 90 Minutes.

..not sure how far the earlies got...

Pic show Peter walking backwards off the 3rd Tee towards the hedge...yes he did the impossible - his ball hit the 1cm high wood surround of the winter tee and shot back over the  heads of his playing partners..only trouble is everyone was stood right behind him to pick up the ball flight due to the fog...

we were all ordered in by Gareth the Greenkeeper.,,although we are not sure if it was for the visibility or Pete's errant  Golf !

Monday 10th January 2022 - Cancelled Winter League

Good call by The Captain yesterday, cancelling Round 4 and saving a lot of people an unnecessary drive in pretty horrible conditions.

We wondered why there had been no course update ( ie 9 holes only, no buggies....)...

,,but we soon found out.

Greeted by a Police Accident on each side of the A30 approach to the club, and flashing blue & orange lights from 3 Police Cars, Ambulance ( arrived later) Slades Recovery Lorry.

One car was facing chard but well buried into the large trees on the right. Another was in the Club Car Park

The Car pictured had been pushed off the road by the EGGS at 07:45 , the other car is to ,right of Police Car in the trees.

2nd car recovered on Slade's   Truck

Unfortunately the car on the Truck is Pro-Shp Stephan's pride & joy, his Mini.

Stephan had slowed to enter car park when other car rear-ended him at speed , pushing him 30 yards down the road. As you can see visibility was  about 100 Yards, although a mile either , as height dropped, the roads were pretty clear.

Stephan was in the Bar as we arrived, steadying his nerves, waiting to be checked out by NHS. Trauma can be a funny thing, so you can never be too careful. He was quite chatty and seemed OK..just said 'I loved that Mini'

The Driver of the other Car was another young man, who was thoroughly checked out by to Police & Ambulance as you would expect.

Excitement over as those that had arrived were greeted with a closed course, with just 9 holes. others yet to arrive face 'road closed ' signs and probably went back home.

Eggs were in the Bar and 3 of their number had already ventured out, along with Dave Asquith & Neil Cochran..chatting happily as they passed the Clubhouse window, not sure if they were aware of what had happened.

Probably around 20 Seniors in Clubhouse as we awaited official opening of the Course.

Tetley Crew were round back having their own private party, whilst Billy H & Eric drank Coffee for 2 hours and discussed the pros & cons of training Dartmoor  Ponies  to become Olympic Dressage steeds.

At 08:41 we got the news that it was open, but enthusiasm was waning with quite a number as it was still raining a little and quite foggy. Captain invited "Anyone who fancied 9 holes" to report to the 1st Tee and he would organise a Comp. As it was, 9 arrived and balls were put into the sorting hat.  A 2 from 3 Stableford was agreed format.

1st Team was Roger Hinds, Keith Hunt & John Pearce

2nd Captain, Mark Cording & Peter 3-names

3rd was Barrie Heath, Rob Coombs & Roger Davis

First complaint was from Peter 3-Names who claimed the Crystal Glasses & their contents were supplied by himself , not The Chicken Farmer. The Beverage was Port and 5 Star Remy Martin Cognac.

Off we went in the foggy but dry conditions. It was , however, extremely wet underfoot and even walking was at times somewhat hazardous. Very mild, up at 10 Degrees and modest wind.

Keith on 3rd, good communication between groups kept things very safe.
JKP hit OK Drive, 2nd shot into trees on left, chipped out sideways, 9 iron to greenside and chipped in for a nice 5..for 3 points !

Pete watches on in adoration as Dave goes for the Birdie

Result after 9-Holes:-

1st Barrie Heath, Rob Coombs & Roger Davis  39   £3.00 Each ( Paid)

2nd Captain, Mark Cording & Pete Spencer-Farr   36

3rd Roger Hinds, Keith Hunt & John Pearce           35

Quote of the Day:-

Sat in Clubhouse, Captain asked Roger Davis if he was playing...

Roger replied " I'm thinking about it "...

when Nobby retorted " That's more than your Mother Did back in 1951"...

Welcome to new Chefs. Nobby & James

Just 4 earlies rolled up..but that was enough as Jeremy, Dennis, Mark and xxx set out in the biting North wind...but their score was way ahead of the 2nd Roll-Up .

Captain was in charge and he had made big improvement in the Roll-Up Draw from Wednesday and it all went very smoothly. Terry, Bob, Derek & John  were out first,   Dave, John W, Keith & Roger out last. Roger did ask , tongue-in-cheek "should we go over 16th" but was politely ignored by the skipper. Only other players we saw all day were 1/2  dozen Eggs and the Ilminster threesome, Alan Haggerty/Peter Brook/Robert Smith.

Good Evans did make a brief appearance, but decided freezing his balls off in Axminster laying a hedge was slightly more enticing than trying to hit a golf ball with frozen hands.

Scores that we are aware of ( No Chris G)

Jeremy, Dennis, Mark & xx                  74        £3.00

Dave (Capt) , John W, Roger D & Keith H       70

Terry R, Bob W, Derek G & JKP            66

There was only xx '2' scored on the xx hole paying out   xxx to winners/.

Bob 'cool-hand' White watches Derek sink one on 5th ..but they had only scored 1 point on 3rd hole so knew they were in trouble despite Terry's continues Team Talks and optimism.

Wonderful game golf – we truly are fanatics!

Thanks to Sir Clive for this sobering submission, suggesting that the owners think carefully when adding water features to the course. ( Sorry Steve..he made me write that)....

What is a Golf Ball Worth?
The ball was in the pond on Hole 16 at Oak Crest Golf Club in Norway, Michigan.
It was a brand new Titlelist with the Verso logo on it and he didn't want to loose it
OR take the two stroke penalty as he was already behind in points!!!

NEVER PUT YOUR ARM IN THE WATER TO RETRIEVE A GOLF BALL!!!!!!!!!!!

Everything looks 'armless enough....

gloved hand can be seen protuding, on the right it's a bit more humerus !

obviously pre-Covid when you could actually call an ambulance

Budweiser & Jack Daniels for the Croc Hunters

I'm sorry...please forgive an old croc like me !

OK, gonna need a chainsaw and another pack of Marlboro....

No, not that one either....he was left-handed  and not married....

They managed to sew his arm back on.

He was playing golf again within 6  months!!

Thanks to Rod for another nice picture, celebrating a string of 4 Birdies on 1st, 4th, 12th and 17th..but after a wee tot of Richard's latest creation, using crystal glasses no less, they went to pot a little with 5 Bogeys to wipe out all that good work.  Remember Don't Drink & Drive.....or chip, pitch, putt etc....

The Roll-Up started so well, with steady arrivals right up until 09:45, Mike Hone was a tad late, but he explained "It's a long walk from the 10th Tee"

Captain needed a couple of volunteers to play singles as we had 2 extra, so thanks to Rob & Chris for Volunteering.  That left us the simple task of dealing out 10 3-balls for the Texas Scramble.

The deal was fine, until Chris began to write the names and suddenly realised he was out first. He grabbed the nearest scribe ( Stuart) and requested he complete the writing of names on the start sheet so it could be handed to the Pro Shop. A bleary-eyed Stuart put down his cornflakes and commenced writing..but unfortunately started with the 2nd team, thinking Chris had done the first 3, Marby & co...for some reason known only to Stuart ( maybe Maureen)..he then recorded team 3...well just the 2nd & 3rd member - he kept Player 1 same..so now we not only had the order mixed up..but the players as well.  Captain cross-checked number of teams, but Stuart only had 8...not 10..so the missing teams were identified and added at the end as captain had to get the list to Pro Shop and get to the tee himself.

Luckily JKP is in the habit of taking a snapshot of the draw, so the fighting on the tee..based on the individual recall of 30 Seniors that hadn't really listened anyway..was in full swing. Chris, Norman & Derek had rushed out being drawn first, but by the time they arrived on the tee, the list showed them last..so they went over to 16th. Meantime to list was corrected , with the 1,2,3 arrows on the right clearly showing the order. ..then after a few minutes Chris, Norman & Derek re-appeared from behind the Trees, after finding 5 groups on 16th and chaos over there. They were politely allowed to resume their rightful position and the draw continue.

Got a simple text from Stuart, enclosing his winning score of 57   stating  " It was worth the abuse"

Meanwhile it was the most beautiful Day and quite a lot drier than Monday. We saw Mick Aldridge & his Foursome walking the Top 9 as Buggies were once again not allowed.

Cording Trio were 2 shots clear after 4 holes, taking only 4 putts around Amen Corner ..mainly due to some powerful shots from Mark..but poor decision-making on back 9 eroded that margin with bogies on 13, 14 & 17  which is fatal in these tight Comps...whilst the 2 Dicks in the background indulged in substance abuse ...Photo by Mike Hone.

Welsh Hills can be seen in the background as superb visibility gave some spectacular views across the Somerset Levels ...

On Monday, someone had a leather bracelet that was found on course, it was thought to be one of those clips you use to attach towels to bags etc as it had a silver connector. If you know if its current whereabouts Mr Mark Cording would be grateful to be reunited with it.

From Captain:-Until further notice, we will play 'lift, clean & place' through the green whilst playing our Roll-ups i.e. anywhere except in a penalty area (bunkers & ditches).

Thanks Skipper - it sure was wet yesterday...it would have been a disaster with buggies, quite a few had trouble walking up 13th Fairway....Please follow all the ropes and try to avoid those really boggy areas..it's safer for all of us and more chance of keeping course open.

Great turnout Yesterday as the numbers kept swelling on this Bank Holiday and we soon passed our reduced slot allocation as Tees were heavily booked from 10:06 onwards..but we managed to get the last of the 3 groups that went over to 16th, clear of 1st by 09:50.

Game was changed from original format as course was reduced to 15 holes. Thus the Club Computer could not deal with '1 to count on 1st 5 etc' - but with 3,2,1 a simple NR or 8,9,10 was easily accommodated.

Congratulations to Mike Hone for managing a 6 on the the tricky 10th Hole, which proved the hardest hole on the course yesterday.

Yes, Mr Sweet is back and to be honest, looking rather good..if a tad nervous.  Became more relaxed as he was drawn out with Mr Cool himself, Roger Hinds and a Phantom Pro.
