Winter League Round 4

Interim League Table after 4 Rounds. Thought it funny that 2 players that played as singletons beat their WL Team Players.

So Roger Davis played with Mike Hone in the 4BBB Comp, beating his WL Team Mates Dave & Mark .

Similarilillyy   James was ahead of the dream Team of Gingell / Taylor.

If it ended now, with all Teams dropping a score, the top 3 teams are only separated by a single point.  has it ever been more exciting than this ?

Captain / Chris G request - Please pick out your own cards from Roll-Up box on arrival as mistakes can screw-up the draw if others are relied upon to differentiate between Roger Williams & Roger Withers; Ray Wilson & Ray Wilton; Martin Jewell & Martin Dew etc...

Well done to Richard for deciphering the Anagram  Nuclear Web Lock.

Had to apologise as I accused him of using his Partner to work it out, who is a big campaigner for Cancer Research, - but he says "All my own work ,,then generously added another £10 to the charity fund.

Neil Cochran claimed the only reason he failed to crack the anagram was

the misspelling of Bowel..then immediately fined himself £10 for being nit-picky..so here's another £10 Keith...

He's back..

"Hi All Seniors and Turkey comrades it’s Sweetie here still alive , just sorry I haven’t been in touch before  to say thanks to you all for looking after me after  my accident you know who you are !  ( which is more than I did for a few days !)..  I am eternally grateful and  I hope I didn’t  spoil your trip too much.  I understand that you all where a bit upset but again thanks to you  all  and hope to see you soon.
Best Regards
Sweetie"

Quite a big turnout for Roll-Up as the bad weather skirted around us.

Divided up into 4-balls to play 4BBBBB Matchplay.

Won't bother you with all the scores, but at the very top we saw Chris Gingell & John Pearce take out James Siabi and Mike Hone.

Nobby & Dickie were the best of the rest

Mike on 16th where he landed 8 foot past the pin.

Captain continues to Flash... ( go down a bit for yesterday's results)

MORE FLASH NEWS:

CST management have managed to book in a Society in the middle of the normal Seniors block on Wednesday 8th December.  This will make the administration of the Winter League & Roll-up very difficult. We'd have to Roll-up at 0815 and some tee off times could be almost 2 hours (depending on numbers that turn up)
In view of that, along with the cancellation of the Christmas Cracker, I have decided that the Winter League will take place on Monday 6th, with a normal Roll-up, format to be decided, on Wednesday 8th

Tee-Times  08:10, 18 & 26    ( 3 slots)

08:58, 09:06, 14, 22, 30, 38, 46, 54, 10:02 & 10:06 - ( 10 Slots)

So we can get 52 Players out, 26 Pairs of 4BBB

Well done to Greenkeepers who have replaced all the damaged tee-rubbers on the Winter Matts. - Thanks Matt !

Paul walks respectfully behind 'Those Trousers'..but Martin has the game to go with them after nice Birdie on the 8th

Dickie watches James putt in vain as both Dickie & Bob had 3 points in the bag on 14th..with just 2 to count.

Great up & down by Ian on 10th..but not to be for Farmer Bob & The Captain as they brought up the rear in the Reverse Waltz...

Note to Treasurer..can we buy some tee-rubber inserts  for the Winter Matts as most of those we had to utilise were completely useless.

From Wednesday...

I understand that there has been quite a lot of speculation and rumours about John Sweet.
Below is what we know now and why we have not had a running commentary on his health.  It was been written by Mark Cording, who as organiser of this trip, has been the point of contact.

We have been cautious in informing people until it is clear here, as to his health.
Also we had to inform all his relatives.

He fell over and banged his head, was unconscious until he reached hospital.   Communication was difficult to start with and we had some difficulty until his insurance details were found.   We had good news this evening and he is recovering well and is being assessed tomorrow morning as to when he can fly home.   We hope it will be with us on Friday.

Anything else is speculation.
Dave Mugridge

Mike Burt Farewell

Usually, at these funerals we try to capture the names of those attending at the Crematorium, but they just kept on coming so we gave up.

Those I remember, especially the ones we have not seen for a while, such as Robin & Sylvia Flower..but others in attendance  were Bert & Marian Robinson, John & Iris Willard, Steve & Jacqui Hill, Chris & Rita Denman, Mike & Jackie Dawson, Mick & Marie Aldridge, Norman & Sue Markby,  Steve Southgate & Steve Holt with their Wives, George Willerton, Mike Light, Jan Warner-Booth, John Pearce, Nick Hill, Andy King, Graham & Teresa Pike, Kevin Lacey, Steve Elswood, Paul Gough , Frankie Martin came over, Stu & Maureen gave late apologies (flu) as did John MacOmish ( isolating) - plus The Captain Dave and Mark Cording over in Turkey, along with Peter Spencer-Farr .

Danny & Ruth Dowell were there, Kate and Martyn Hartley, Mike Miles, Ray Gudge tried to make it but had Medical appointment, Dave Smith, Norman ( from Long Sutton), Jan & Mike Wilkes, Martin & Mrs Bargery, Malcolm & Anthony Roy, Alan Davis,  Paul Bennett, Ian Pamplin , Paul Deprose ( old Pro), Lyndsey Gage ( on walking stick), Dave & June Hutchins..and many more familiar faces whom I cannot name.

Many others were hoping to join the wake after work, including current Captain Mark Drayton.

Sitting with Sue Burt, who was marvelous all day, was her Brother, 2 Sons  and a dozen more drilling down to 5 Grand-Children.

We heard more about Mike's great life with Sue, Married for 56 Years and just a  Month ago celebrating his 80th Birthday - but by then Mike was not too good.

Mike ( no surprise) excelled at School and was mad at sports, playing Rugby, Squash, Cricket & of course Golf to a high standard.

He tried a few jobs before joining a Mining Equipment Company as an office-boy..but was destined to become Managing Director. This involved travel worldwide and Sue was often able to accompany him.

Very light-hearted funeral, with stories of Mike rarely entering the Kitchen , except to eat, and his constant practice in the Garden ..Golf of course.

Excellent spread up at the Golf Course with Katie very efficiently running the show. Nice glass of wine awaiting everyone at the Bar, with Mike's picture on the Order of Service saying "This One's on Me"...  which was pretty much Mike for all of his life.

Chatting with Sue at the Club, She bravely explained Mike's deterioration to me as the initial Prostate Cancer spread elsewhere.

She asked me to pass  one simple message to Seniors..."Get Checked !"...

Prostate Cancer has a 97% survival rate if you get in there early.

                               Cheers   Mike !

CAPTAIN’S REPORT 15 NOV 21

WINTER LEAGUE Round 2

The second round of this year’s Winter League took place a very pleasant November morning, ideal for golf with lift, clean & place on the fairways for the accurate and soft, holding greens for the well struck approach shot.

To accommodate the Winter Leaguers and the Roll-Uppers, a system has been devised by Chris G & JKP to have a mixed draw to maximise our golf. The new Section Captain took one look at the process working like magic and kept very quiet.

There were some good scores, some average scores and some not so good scores - in other words a normal day for CST Seniors.

Andy Rowland & Keith Hunt won the Roll up with a stunning score of 47 pts, with Barrie Heath & Martin Jewell topping the Winter Leaguers with 45 pts, which with their team’s excellent performance in Round 1, gives them a 10 pt lead over their nearest pursuers.

Some excellent play over the past few weeks has attracted the attention of JW and there will be handicap reductions for 3  Seniors (MJ, KH & DG).

 CST Club AGM

In the evening, 5 Seniors lead by the Captain and outgoing Captain attending the Club AGM. The meeting was chaired by the incoming Club Captain, Jimmy Patch and attended by about 25 members plus Alex Hill, representing the owners.

Mark & Normski, on behalf of the Senior Section, had put forward a motion requesting a more equable distribution on the Club Committee, with the inclusion of Senior and Lady members. On the direction of the Club’s Owner, this motion was noted. There were several fairly heated discussions but no significant progress made.  Senior section members were frequently talked down by former Captains of the Club and unable to make their points in the discussions.

However, Jimmy Patch has agreed to set up bi-monthly meetings with Donna Adey & myself, to attempt to bring about better cooperation between the various sections of the club. Post meeting, some further discussion was held and some ways forward were identified. He also stated that he cannot do much, as if the Club do not want “it” to happen, as it’s a privately owned club.

One probable outcome of these discussions, is that in the Summer months, individual competitions (e.g. Monthly Medals & Stablefords) will not be closed until the evening, which will allow working members of the Senior Section to enter these competitions after they have finished work.

 Dave Mugridge

Captain, Senior Section

 Changes in Roll-Up Slots

From: "Alex Hill"

Subject: Senior Roll Up / Competition Slots

Date: 16 November 2021 at 15:20:59 GMT

To: "David Mugridge"

Good Afternoon David,

I hope you are well. I have been waiting for a while to send this following email, as had been hoping that numbers for your competitions and roll up’s would pick up. Whilst the later slots seem to have picked up since we have opened the clubhouse, the early roll up numbers are very low and have only used more than 2 slots on two occasions since 1st October 2021. On one of these occasions this was when you used none of your late roll up slots either. I have attached your roll up sheets (since 01.10.21) for your reference.

I am sure you are aware that as we head into the Winter months it is always more difficult to get a slot to play golf on the course, with the daylight hours steadily decreasing as well this makes it even more difficult. With this in mind, I am sure you can appreciate that due to the Seniors regularly not using their slots, the club have made the decision to reduce your roll up slots as of Friday 19th November. If numbers begin to pick up again and there is a demand for more slots, then we will be more than happy to review this again.

As of Friday 19th November your roll up slots will be as follows:

8:02am – 8:26am

9:06am – 10:10am

As a result, losing 2 slots in the morning roll up and 2 slots in the late roll up, but according to our records, these slots have rarely been used.

We also hope you’ll appreciate that we are one of the few clubs that provides our Seniors with roll up slots three times a week (Monday/Wednesday/Friday).

I personally, would like to see the numbers increase again and as said above, if/when this happens, will be more than happy to review again.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Take care and see you again soon.

 Kind Regards,

Alex Hill | General Manager | Cricket St Thomas Golf Club Limited

Note:-

Please address your concerns verbally in-person directly to The Seniors Captain.

From Mark Cording

We have received a 4 BALL VOUCHER from STOVER GOLF, Newton Abbot.

It was to be auctioned at the annual dinner and then the AGM, which were cancelled.

The voucher is VALID UNTIL 01 SEPTEMBER 2022.

Please let me have your bids ASAP, as Keith and I are trying to finalise a total for funds raised during 2021.

I would also like to thank everybody who supported me in my year as Captain.

My best wishes to Dave for 2022.

 Mark

Wednesday Roll-Up - Missing Block Booking

I see Winter Matts are appearing...don't forget those rubbers....Keith Branchmanager was up yesterday reminding us all that the date of the AGM has passed and the new year has started, so those £3.00 membership Fees are now due. Pay at Roll Up or pop money into Mail box ( in an envelope with your name) - attached to filing cabinet in locker room. Over 80's are of course exempt.
It's a small price to pay for all our admin costs and your complementary annual calendar print-out.
Apologies to all that who have joined us recently and don't have proper Roll-Up cards - It's not a simple process to get them done, so we have to wait until we have 20-30 or more to make it worthwhile..unless you have a better idea in this modern age....

Dave Mugridge: In view of the problem around Wednesday's tee times, I've decided to change the competition to Individual Stapleford, played in 4's or 3's as appropriate, depending on number. It will be normal 0845 time. The Earlies will have 0802, 0810 & 0842 as their tee times. We will fill in as best we can the tee times we have managed to secure.
Any whinging, refer them to me

Have spoken to Cyd and we now have the remaining 14 tee times, as below:

 0802, 0810, 0842

0906 - 0954

1010,1018

1034, 1042

That should be sufficient for the planned 2 from 3 Stapleford discard.

Cyd has looked and we're fine for the next couple of weeks.
