More sad news this morning, from Sue Burt via Steve Holt.

Mike Burt passed away this morning after being ill for quite a while. We are always being asked about Mike as he has been a big part of the Golf Club, along with Sue for so many Years.

Another who was Club Captain and a low handicap golfer in his prime.

As Captain for one more day, could you please add a personal

but also a tribute on behalf of the section.

“Mike Burt was instrumental in persuading me to join CST.

He invited me to play Oake Manor in a four ball many years ago, just after moving into the area.  Great company and always modest.  My heart goes out to Sue she will miss a great man and friend as we all will.    From the whole of the Seniors Section I wish his Family peace and solace at his passing.

Live long in our memory dear friend”.

[11/11, 12:59] Mike HONE: Sad sad news, Mike was one of the best.... 😔 🏌️‍♀️

[11/11, 13:01] James Siabi: Very sad indeed.
[11/11, 13:23] Steve Southgate: Always good company 😒
[11/11, 13:25] Roger STONE: One of the first seniors that I played with on joining Windwhistle (CST) seniors six years ago. A good golfer and true gentleman
[11/11, 13:35] Edmondo Paoloni: Wonderful friend of many many years
[11/11, 13:45] Bill Hilson: A sad loss we had many good games together will be missed
[11/11, 17:05] Peter Spencer-Farr:  True, true gentleman. Always smiling, a real pleasure to have known. We nicknamed him 'Silky Smooth' in the Marauders as he had a beautiful golf swing. Sadly missed.  R.I.P.

At a Seniors Function Allo-Allo Style...with a glass of wine of course...It's not me, his face really was that blurred...

Don't believe everything you see on the Blog...
usually I wore the finest Pringle and actually played Golf !!

Thanks to Normski for the Picture.

After careful consideration following some concerns, we have decided to hold the AGM as planned.

This will be held under Social Distancing Guidelines and will cover the items of protocol that are legally required.

If any member has an urgent item for consideration for the agenda please let us have this by Weds PM.

We will be limiting topics to reduce the length of the meeting.

Covid concerns may well reduce numbers attending but if not the case when maximum reached we will restrict entry.

The roll up will be a 15 hole 4 man individual Stableford Qualifier event to enable us to start at approximately 13.30 as advertised.  Two draws as normal

The Captain (for 4 more days)

Here's a few Help Messages for your kind consideration

  • I have decided to step down from organising the Seniors Avalon team for next year. No one in this years squad has expressed an interest in taking this on so we need to widen the net! The role involves organising fixtures (some are done), and picking teams (maximum handicap index 20) for 12 matches (6 home and away). Fixtures need organising promptly and attendance would be required at the league AGM on Thursday November 25th at Mendip Spring. If you would like to take on this role please contact Dave Mugridge asap

Neil watches as Andy King makes another miraculous recovery shot on 14th...can you spot the ball ?... Andy frustrated Jolly Roger all day with his play around the greens and sneaking in first..even on this hole, as Roger watched the Captain tee-off on 13th..Andy sunk a long putt for 2 points and casually tossed Roger his ball once again...

Is it me or are the hills getting steeper..but a lovely day once again.

Neil held his form all day with some great shots to the green and rock steady off the tee ( thank goodness says his partner)....

Now if you can zoom in, that's Roger, Billy & Martin on 13th

The Phantom Pros were not quite as per normal as Chris G drew the names at random to contribute to the scores of the two 2-balls.  It could not be done by the Club Computer, but he did it all manually, using the Pro's score on each hole where it gave them extra points.

Farmer B is still awaiting his confirmation Test Results (thought it was supposed to be next day) - but Mrs B has also now proven Positive via LFT. I was chatting to BB on the phone, obviously on Loudspeaker when BB calculated how many more days he had to stay isolated...

" I reckon  I've done 7 now he said"..as a voice from the east wing of their farmhouse kitchen echoed  "It's only 5 Darling "...

Is he going to make it I wonder ?

I would be grateful if you would put the following notice on the Seniors' Website.

Old age has caught up with me!

I have decided to retire from competitive golf after a string of awful rounds .

On retiring, I would like to thank all members of the Seniors' Section for their friendship and  their keen competitiveness over the years.  I would also like to thank those who have held office, particularly John Pearce, for his double stint as Captain and for his continuing contribution to our group.

I plan to become a Social Member so there should be ample opportunities to keep in touch with you all,

Winter League update

Due to lack of communications and the headache caused by Covid, I have been asked to run the event for this year. Since we have very little time until the 1st round due in two  one days time, we are moving the event to Friday 5th.

(We still have 7 members isolating)-   Wednesday to be a 2 from3 Stableford

In order to minimise the amount of time it takes to organise predefined tee times and others having to roll up after the Winter League teams, It is decided that Winter league is run as a rollup event and since it is a 4BBB format, everyone can join in and treat it as such. This way we are only running one competition on the day rather than two. The highest scores on the day will win the day’s prizes. Those who have registered for the league will have their scores entered on to the league table. The best 5 out of the 7 rounds will count and the team with the highest score will be the champions.

This is how the rollup will be organised:

Teams will decide among themselves which two will be playing as a team on the day. On arrival we will take our cards out as we do for the rollups with a slight difference. Only one card from the 2 members of the teams playing on the day will go in the pack and the other put aside for the pairing purposes. If a 3rd member of the team is also playing on the day, his card will go in as a normal rollup member. Cards shuffled and drawn out. If a card drawn is a member of the Winter League team, his playing partner will be the next member of the group of 4 and will be going out with the other 2 drawn names.

It has been suggested that we should have some flexibility within the system because of Covid. As we know we have had a number of positive cases and it is likely that this trend will continue as we enter the winter months. It is  likely that a number of people will be self-isolating during these periods.

My plan is so cunning
 it scares me...
It is therefore possible for a team that has only one member available on the day, to have a random partner to make it a proper 4BBB. This is proposed for this year only and a proper discussion will take place to look at the format of this competition for the years ahead.

Regards

Professor James T Siabi
