A Cording to me , Whats-on..
the event was cancelled by this tiny virus...
...

With the recent new cases and general feeling of unease at gatherings, unfortunately the decision regarding Friday’s Annual Dinner was effectively made for me.   As for whether the Covid situation changes sufficiently enough for a rescheduling is yet to be seen.

Likewise we will make a similar decision regarding the AGM in due course.    In the meantime if you have any of the trophies at home please return these immediately as Chris Gingell needs to have these engraved.

Saturday AM -

That's 7 Positive with PCR and 1 more awaiting results

DG now has his PCR and it is POSITIVE but he says he is feeling much better hopes he's over the worst.

..Just in Farmer B tested positive this morning and awaiting PCR. Didn't play Friday....

(RD)  PCR proves Positive so is out for 10 Days but symptoms of mild Flu but no loss of appetite.

This morning, (IT) writes:-

Just quick update I'm being moved to intensive care as can't breathe...  really scary times. Sorry can't reply to all your messages personally but I read and appreciate every one..Stay safe people this virus is raging.. All the best (IT).

"Good Morning All

Thought I would share some good news as the email from (IT) is concerning.

I’m over the worst of the virus and on the mend.

Keep safe.  (JW)"

Sorry about use of Initials, but have to respect people's privacy as best we can and Blog is open to anyone.

Friday Covid Update:-

Original (IT)  now in Hospital with Wife & Granddaughter infected.  Other POSITIVE cases are (NM), ( JW), (AR),  with (RD) awaiting PCR.   (DG) has reported feeling bad this morning, so is going for a Test.

Later....IT still poorly on Oxygen and 41 Deg Temp, but at last able to eat something. In his own words:-

"Just been moved to yealm ward in a separate isolation room. It's where you get moved to if not improving much. At least had some food today for 1st time since Sunday"

..now if you know IT...being on a starvation diet must be pretty tough to tolerate. Lots of messages of support. We're trying to complete the Winter League before you get back on the Golf Course to  take that Trophy as well this Year. You and JL have just about won the lot.

Amazingly, after Course finally re-opened  there was some golf played.

Covid Warning- those of you on WhatApp will already be aware that a Senior, competing in  Friday's Cyder Cup  has subsequently tested positive for Covid, confirmed by a PCR Test. He is feeling pretty rough at the moment with multiple symptoms. Other members have been 'pinged' - by Test & Trace, although the Application is not being widely used at the moment. Others have been tested and so far proved Negative. We've done amazingly well to date and must be the most fortunate people on the Planet to have been able to continue our Golf.
Ignore me at your peril  !!!

Several Members have suggested stepping up our vigilance a level until the numbers settle down again. There can be no denying that we are in a hot-spot just now but hopefully it will subside as quickly as it erupted after all those false negatives.

Well done to those of you that took unilateral action.

CYDER CUP Singles Day
.
At last the weather turned out well, in so much that all participants could get onto the course and do battle in Singles Day.
During the round a little mist and minor drizzle rolled in, however it didn't interfere with play.

Since Wednesday the greens had been sprayed and cut so a lighter putting stroke was required. I must add that in my four ball Farmer Bob was drawn against Paul Taylor and recieved  9 shots from Paul .I was really impressed with Pauls play and he managed a great round scoring a gross 71. Bob only lost 3 down with his score of Net 69. A great game to watch.

Having gone through the draw results the score for the day ended up as:

Captains Team  : 12 1/2 pts    Vice Captains 10 1/2 pts

Final Total : Captain 24 1/2 pts  Vice Captain  18 1/2 pts

Gentlemen I hope that you all enjoyed the Fun competition even though Mondays event was washed / misted out.
It will be hoped that we might be able to play this event  a little earlier next year, maybe bringing the event forward to the Balmy September month providing other Matches and Events allow it

The Captain will be returning to the fold next Wednesday when he will decide the money pay out to his winning team participants.
Thank you all for your help over the past week in making this a positive event

CYDER CUP DAY2 FOURSOMES

After another night of adverse weather, Rain , Thunder and Lightening, things were not looking good.

When I arrived at the club the course was closed and no buggies allowed, with a course review promised at 0830.

0830,  the course was declared open, unfortunately no buggies except for personal buggies.

With the Buggy ban in place unfortunately 3 players were not able to play and Bryan Frost didn't want to tempt fate with his Segway buggy.

Some players were not tempted to play due to the weather forecast.

The fourballs that did play were met with an increasing wind , difficult at times, but low and behold, no rain and sunny conditions

there were some close games. The seniors pairs matchplay champs Ian and Jim almost met their match playing against the stand in Vice Captain and his partner Roger Williams.  We thought that Jim might not be able to carry on past the 7th hole.  After playing his shot from where his partners drive came to rest, which was just short of Dingly Dell but on the bank near to OOB, he put his club back into his bag and the proceeded to walk back to the fairway.

ask 'em for  a 'gimmee' Ian...
Rule 106 B
The next thing we saw was Jim laying on his back, we all thought he had slipped on the grassy bank, however when we reached him he said that he had smacked his head on the bough of the tree it left a small bruise to his forehead but no cut.

Like a true fellow from over the Northern Border he carried on. Roger and Roger then had to think again, and play better golf as we were giving the opposition 9 shots .Eventually the reigning Champs won 1up.

Results:  Mondays 4BBB  as the course was closed ( mist and rain) no games were played. each game was declared a draw  5 1/2 ----5 1/2

               Wednesday Fouresomes      Captain 6 1/2      Vice  2 1/2

RUNNING TOTAL                 Captain 12 pts     Vice 8 pts

If you look carefully you will see a Golfer playing from behind a tree in 7th Bomb Crater..you can even see the trace of the Golf Ball on the left.

Disappointing that this match, which was more like a chess-match than a foursomes, was repeatedly nagged from the group behind for slow play. The round took 3 hours 6 minutes, with never more than 1-hole difference and was not decided until the 18th. Some of us cannot walk as fast as we could even a year-ago . This is supposed to be the Seniors Section and our strength is in our inclusivity, allowing Members to play until a ripe-old age. We have already lost many Seniors to other groups in recent years as the age group was lowered by the Club. In Foursomes, there may only be 2 balls in play, but there are 4-brains involved and time must be allowed to enjoy the full game.

Captain’s Updates

The Annual Dinner is to be held in Horizons  on Friday 5th November.  This is black tie or lounge suit and I am waiting for meal options and pricing from Alex.  Always a great evening and a chance for your better half to dress up and for you to thank her for her understanding during the past year of golf.   Numbers are slightly limited so this will be first come first served.  The sign up sheet is on the board.  WE ARE ALSO INCLUDING THE PRIZE PRESENTATION FOR 2021 AT THE DINNER.

Any body winning a trophy but unable to attend will be able to collect at the AGM on FRI 12th November.

On the golfing side we have decided that all seniors golfing events until further notice will be played under winter rules.

The Mens Section AGM is being held on the 15th of November.  As a section we intend to propose a motion to form a club committee with proportional representatives from The Mens, Ladies and Seniors.    If you have any comments on this or any other matter please send this to myself by 25 October as we will be holding a committee meeting to formulate the wording of any proposal.    This is no way stops you contacting the Mens Section directly.

CAPTAIN'S REPORT FRIENDLY MATCH V. BREAN 14 October 2021

Another stunning October day with perfect weather for golf.    This was our last home match of the season and were able to field a strong side against our friends from Brean.

One match went to the 18th and three were decided on 17 and the consensus was that Brean were very stiff opponents.   That is also reflected in the fact that they won the Somerset Senior Bowl beating Weston super Mare in the Final.

CORDING & DENNETT.                  WON   3&1

PAOLONI & DAVIS.                          WON.  2&1

LAUCHLAN & THOMAS.                  WON.  3&1

STONE & BARROW.                        LOST.  3&2

HUNT & HEATH.                               LOST.  1 DOWN

MUGRIDGE & SPENCER-FARR.     WON.  5&4

Overall Result. 4-2 Win

Captain’s Report Friendly V. Enmore 12 October 2021

Another cracking October day for golf and a fantastic result against a very useful Enmore side.    Unfortunately the green keeping staff decided to thatch several fairways and semi rough, but neither advised us in advance nor over cut their work.   So we had to take a decision within each fourball as to whether to allow free drops.   The greens were faster today than yesterday but the edges of the holes, owing to the tining and sanding were unreceptive to golf balls, well certainly to John and mine.

Enmore always ask for 8 pairings and  we had a very strong team today, which allowed me to pair up friends and regular fourball partners.   It seemed to work as we won the match 6 1/2 to 1 1/2.    The only losers being myself and the Handicap Secretary, we played reasonably well but were out putted and the opposition Captain played very well.     Even the two Rogers, Messrs. Hinds and Stone always tough to play were held to a halve.     Thankfully the rest of the team all achieved excellent victory margins to force a very good win.   Well done to the whole team.

CORDING & WANDLESS.                     LOST.   2&1

HINDS & STONE.                                    HALVED

THOMAS & LAUCHLAN.                        WON   7&6

DAVIS & DENNETT.                                 WON.  3&1

GARDENER & ROWLAND.                      WON.  5&4

HUNT & PAOLONI.                                   WON   6&5

CHANCE & POPE.                                     WON.  3&2

MUGRIDGE & MARKBY.                           WON.   5&3

OVERALL VICTORY 6 1/2 to 1 1/2.

Nasty surprise for one Senior as he arrived home... and discovered  he'd  unwelcome
visitors. Broke into Shed, then into locked cupboard within,  picked up crow bar.
Tried window & failed, but smashed it anyway. Attacked back door and after several
pretty obvious attempts seemed to have opened it enough to lift all the locking bars.
Red Rings are Jemmy marks.

Inside stole nothing, although watches, Laptop etc all in view. But opened lots of draws and cabinets
strewing contents around, letting J  know they were around.

Very traumatic but our 2019 Captain seemed to be very stoical. He believes may be reference a local planning issue that he has become involved in.

Police seemed skeptical, but  to my mind they wanted to send him a message without risking being caught with anything incriminating, but any cash
encountered would have been most welcome.

Loss assessor arriving to arrange replacement  of several windows & doors.

One lesson I learned was it's no use having a pretty secure House if all the tools are around to use to break in, although the Shed was no pushover with
a pretty secure deadlock, but there was enough movement in the structure to allow the lock to be sprung.

Car and outline of 2 men were picked up on CCTV, but no clear identification.

It's ironic, but while I was there his Cousin arrived for an extended  stay accompanied by a rather large, Doberman Pinscher - which I gave a wide berth as it took a dislike to me.

Mark & Richard did all their hard work on front 9, so back 9 of just 20 pushed them down to Third..and zero cash.

Hard to separate top 2  who both had 23 on the back 9, then 16 on the back 6 ..but thanks to Keith chipping-in a birdie 3, for 4 points on 17th - their back 3 was 1 ahead of Martin & Norman.

We know ties are calculated slightly differently these days, but easier to demonstrate this way . Farmer Bob once more demonstrated his short game and adaptability to the Winter Greens.

Captain’s Report Friendly V. LONG SUTTON Home 05 October 2021

The overnight rain, apparently well over an inch, meant no buggies and one of their team was left out as he couldn't walk the course. I decided bunkers were GUR and to have preferred lies but as it turned out the fairways were immaculate and this was an overcautious decision. The paths were very muddy but all other parts of the course were remarkably playable. Apart from a couple of very light showers the day was basically sunny, which vindicated my decision to wear shorts.

The Long Sutton team were on average lower handicap golfers than CST but their Captain chose their highest handicapper as his partner. He must know something as he proceeded to contribute in all but one hole. This is an excuse for the Captain and Norman only halving our match, despite the latter holing out his pitch on 9 from over forty yards for a home winning 2. Our team generally found easier opponents and we again had a resounding victory.

Cording & Markby                 Halved

Paoloni & Pope               Won  5&4

Lauchlan & Thomas.             Won 2 up

Hoe & Gardener                  Won 2&1

Stone & Barrow                Won 5&3

England & Davis.             Won 6&5

Match result 51/2 to 1/2 . Another great result for CST

Monday 4th October 2021

10 of us attended to say goodbye to ‘Mr Whirly’ or Ronald Marshall Sutherland. The boy from Inverness who did rather well down here and passed aged just 75.

Most of you reading this will only know Ron as a grumpy Golfer, prone to flinging Clubs and cursing his luck, but the well organised Cremation told a rather different story.

I was seated with Dickie & Jenny Hall, Stu Pope, Tony Church, Alan Davis, Norman Markby, Clive Fisk , Nick Hill and JKP.  There were about 45 in total, with the vast majority being members of a rather complicated family, such is the way these days. All was arranged by his Son, Rocking Ronnie a DJ of note and known to many of you.

The oldest acquaintances were Dickie & Jenny who knew Ron and his first Wife Vera some 50 Years ago as they worked in the Chard Meat factory. So Son Ronnie was there with his family , relatives of Wife Vera and work colleagues from the Meat Factory or more recently Henry- Hoover.

The other ‘party’ was Ron’s Wife Linda and her family from Marriage No.1 – many will know Linda from Golf Socials up at the Club.

We entered the much re-vamped Crematorium, complete with Coffee Shop and Flower Shop and doubled in size for waiting around.  We had followed the procession over Blagdon Hill, with the Mr Whirly Van leading the way.

Lots of memories and Videos shown during the Ceremony by a ‘Celebrant’ – as Ron was not too big on religion. Not much in the way of flowers apart from a wreath from the EGGS.

The first big impact was the Coffin. Made of Cardboard and painted as a Golf Scene, with Ron playing a shot to a green below snow-capped hills in Scotland. They even spun the coffin around so we could see the full panoramic view.

..It was only later that Linda told me the ‘Snow’ was in fact Ron’s “Ice-Cream” Jacket that they had draped atop the coffin and the effect it created was entirely accidental.

One Video shown was of Ron a few Years ago taking part in a TV Programme and showed him at work in the Van and his interaction with Customers and him giving away free cones to needy Children and even taking them into Pensioners homes.

I Know that to be true as I was on School Lane a few years bye, with 2 Granddaughters, when Ron screeched to a halt, handed us all a free ‘99’ , winked - and sped off with my 2 girls thinking it was a wonderful place to live !

It talked about his tough early life in Inverness and his move South, building up a successful business with 3 vans and 4 Trailers. En-Route he had tried Building Work, Hospitality up in Bristol etc

It was in fact on an Ice-Cream Run that he met Linda. Both were now on their own and Linda had a screaming 4 year-old begging for a treat, but had ventured out with no money. Ron smiled and handed her a large cornet and was rewarded with a lovely smile…no, not from Linda – she came up and bollocked Ron for rewarding a Tantrum with a Treat

..but it broke the ice and they developed a relationship, leading to marriage, some 10 Years ago.

There was much talk of Holidays to USA, involving lots of Golf with the boys.

In one story,  a trip to Florida near ended in disaster, when Grandson Corey drove a Club Buggy into the Lake, later found to be alligator infested.

Not only were they charged many bucks  by the club for damage and recovery..but the fun had just begun. Despite splashing about looking for personal property, they lost keys to their rental car, Ron’s glasses , wallets etc etc…The Rental Company managed to supply spare keys, but Linda wasn’t insured – so Ron had to drive to the Hotel , ‘blind as a bat’ following verbal instructions from Linda.

It ended in Taunton  with the chimes of ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’ booming over the sound system and we were an our way back to CST.

Very easy run and we were back by 15:30 but Buffet had not been booked until around 17:00 as they expected traffic delays..so quite a while before a nice buffet was brought out in the Horizon’s Room as heavy rain fell outside.

There another dilemma was cleared up.   We had published on the blog that Ron’s hole in one was on the 2nd and then heard at the Service that it was scored on the 16th..so I started apologizing…until it was finally cleared up. Go back a few Years when we were Windwhistle. The first 4 holes now, used to be our last 4 holes. So the current  Par 3  2nd  was in fact the 16th back then…strange eh !

Although we never heard him say it, Golf with us was very important to Ron, having to be Mr. Nice-Guy in his professional Business and with his Family..he could happily be grumpy and competitive on a Golf Course  and fit in with everyone else around…..

..and there you have Senior’s Golf.

Farewell Ron, sorry you had to go so soon.

Captain’s Report Friendly V. Yeovil Away 04 October 2021

We were pleasantly oversubscribed for this Away fixture and had the difficult task of selecting a side when most had regularly supported me during 2021.

The selected team must have played well as we won all but one match.

The course was very well presented and the greens were fast and true, a pleasure to play.   Today we had the added impetus of playing against George Wallace one of our former members.   Roger and James had the opportunity to play against George and I even changed my normal habit and gave them a little pep talk in the changing room.    They rose to the challenge to emerge victorious.

  Cording & Heath.                   Won. 3&2

Davis & Dennett.                     Won  1 Up

 Lauchlan & Thomas.              Won 2&1

 Siabi & Stone.                           Won 2&1

 Rowland & Paoloni.                 Lost 3&2

Mugridge & Gardener.            Won 1 Up

Match result 5 - 1. A great result for an away Match

Seniors Three Man Scramble 01-10-2021

Nice little turn-out considering we had 24 at Long Sutton. Talking about Long Sutton, I'm sitting at home watching the score coming in LIVE  showing it was all a bit tricky with lots of our players don in the 20's..more later.

6 Early Players, 18 at 08:45 and glad we had given 6 slots back to the Club , which we know they appreciated.

More good news, although it's a top secret at the moment - but expect Clubhouse to be open Monday week at 08:00 for our Roll-Up and Coffee..getting back to normal..but don't tell anyone yet !

Thanks to Chris Basterfield for stepping back as we were 1 over in the late draw, so he decided to rest his sore and strongly supported back muscles.

Dickie didi his Monthy Draw up in the Bar, with winners:-

41  Norman Markby - Liter Scotch

164  Bill Hilson    Bottle of Fine Wine

176   Ian Frost      Box celebrations

Thanks for all your support once more, all going to the Captain's Charity

Weather was kind to us once again, with one 5 minute shower about Midday but plenty of sunshine. Gave a Card over the Bar for Lisa who was spending her last day up at the Club before starting up her new business ion Cannington.

Update on Ron Sutherland Funeral

We'll keep Ron atop the page for now, just scroll below for updates on the Golf

Alan D ( back up and about..but not quite golfing yet) - correctly pointed out to me that the scattering of the ashes will be at some future time as you are never given them on the day of the Cremation.

Ron in all his Highland splendour on his Wedding Day
Thanks to Dickie Hall for the Picture....

Monday 4th October  14:00 at Taunton Crematorium.

Funeral Cortege will depart Gibbs at 13:00, led by a Wr. Whirly Ice-Cream Van and head up Chard High Street en-route to the Crematorium,

No Flowers please, dress as colourful as you dare.  Donations to Cancer Research appreciated.

Son Ronald & Ron's Wife Linda  invite you all back to CST Golf Club afterwards to remember Ron, share a wee dram and refreshments.

Club has given permission to scatter Ron's ashes around the 2nd Green and it was felt that the Eggs may wish to participate, whom he played with in his final Months up at the Club and whose company he so much appreciated.

Should be time for a round of Golf ( Mourners out first please) - quick-change   and fill up cars to and from the Crematorium. JKP can take 4 others in his Car  great if other can do the same.

Depart CST ( TA20 4DG ) to Taunton Crem (TA1 5NE) - 19 Miles 40 Mins over Blagdown Hill.  Need to leave before 13:00 I reckon.

Got a feeling it's going to be busy.....so getting there early is probably ideal.

Wednesday 29th September 2021 - 4BBB

Greeted by another beautiful day as 34 gathered in the Locker Room  as the 4 combatants in the Summer KO Final went out for their match, Jim was sporting a rather catching if 'immodest' Golf Shirt..probably to wind up the opposition...

..but why not indeed !

here they are playing the 4th

Strange day as it felt like 20 Degrees in the Sun and 10 Degrees in the shade

No rest for the Captain as he then had to sort the Teams out for Yeovil Monday & Long Sutton Tuesday..see InterClub Matches

Guest appearances for Andy Beale & Tony Stenhouse with the late groups..and I expect we'll see them again as they were paired with Danny & Farmer Bob.

Rather confused results as Computer added each pair together,,,,so Chris Gingell has to modify Computer to correctly sort them as pairings. Looking at the Maths, even the pairings were pretty random  and 2 plus 2 didn't make 4 yesterday !

Disappointing that Seniors are still confined to the locker-room for Roll-Up and no service is being offered in the Sports Bar..it's going to be a long cold winter we fear.....

New 1st Green laid flat, seeded and now covered as the view extend over the Quanticks, Mendips and on towards Cardiff Bay...

Billy & Ian stride up the 1st...Billy had a slow start with just 13 points on the front 9.....but suddenly he came alive and smashed 23 points on the back 9...making a mockery of his new 33 handicap..but rather enjoying the experience....

Knighton Heath Cup

On Friday, CST Seniors played the Semi-final of the Knighton Heath Cup away at Crane Valley GC, which is near Verwood in Dorset, approx 1½ hour  drive from CST. The format is 10 single matches in strict handicap order.

The course is a little longer than CST but more open. The greens were built to USGA standards and well struck shots would hold the green. The putting surfaces were good but not quite as good as CST’s.

Sadly, we were beaten 8-2, with several close matches finishing near to the clubhouse. It is evident that in the series of matches that we have played to get this far is that local knowledge is a significant advantage, particularly around the green.

Our only winners were Roger Hinds & Steve Southgate, but, well done to all those who have played in getting us this far.

Dave Mugridge
Vice Captain

Friendly v. Axe Cliff

Our intrepid team of 12 hiked up the steep slope from the car park to the course on a bright and not too breezy Thursday, with late replacement Ian Housham standing in for the injured Roger Stone - what did he do in the Summer Sizzler to injure his back?

The result was not what we would have hoped with several teams running into players in top form (Quote “I don’t normally play nearly this well”).

The course was running fairly firmly and the greens were rather slower & less smooth than CST.

However, back in the Clubhouse, the food - roast Turkey with all the trimmings, followed by Apple Crumble - was top notch and a great change from Ham, egg & chips.

Match Result CST 2½ Axe Cliff 3½

Mugridge & Spencer Farr              lost 4&3

Housham & Barrow.                        lost 3&1

Thomas & Lauchlan                         won 2&1

Siabi & Gingell                                   halved

Davis & Paoloni                                 lost 5&4

Gardener & Rowland                      won 4&3

First picture was of an early Dawn  from James Siabi..but he was all alone on the 8th at 6 am...instead of the 6th at    8 am.....

getting lighter as Dickie Hall arrives on full-beam out of the morning mist....

Carole strides up 15th where she would register another 3 points for her Team......after the Driver was bent in half and flung over the hedge....

Let the Buffet begin as Donna's perfectly orchestrated event serves up lunch at 12:30 precisely...Fresh Made Sandwiches, Sausage Rolls, Duck Rolls, Cheese tubes..so good Paul England went round 3-times...then a large selected of cakes from  Steve the Chef's Patisserie Repertoire....sorry been watching too much bake-off....

Look..Danny chose ME...OK !

Carole up 14th As Donna & Team Tee off on 13th...we sneaked ahead when  Jolly Roger found he still had his carpet slippers on when he arrived at the 5th Tee to start....

..talking about Jolly Roger..loved this on on the Seniors Fun page of WhatsApp....

Monday 20th September 2021   Roll-Up & Dorset Match

Lots of memories of Ron Sutherland going around. As we started on 16th, passed Diane Dick playing on her own and asked her how James (Jim) was, haven't seen him for a while as they joined Lyme Regis...." He died last year "  was her reply, I'm just starting to play Golf again".....as she strolled down the 17th..I buried my red-face in the nearest bush....

Monday 20 Sept 2021

A lovely September day, warm and sunny with a swirling wind that was sometimes difficult to judge.   We had been whitewashed in the away fixture on the 05th July.   Today our course showed how much home advantage is.  Again our opponents were very complementary of our course and it’s condition.

 STONE & DENNETT.            WON.  5&4

 LAUCHLAN & THOMAS.    WON.  5&4

 DAVIS & PAOLONI.               LOST 6&5

 GARDENER & ROWLAND.  WON 2&1

 SPENCER-FARR & GINGELL WON 3&1

 MATCH RESULT.  5 - 1

another win for the Thomas / Lauchlan Team

James Siabi kindly went out in a 2-ball to enable Rod Coombs to completed his Third Card for handicap, which also made the numbers correct, thanks James.

The Blue Mac  makes Par on 18th after Birdy on 17th... giving Team a 9,8 start after beginning on 16th. Ian made Par for 4 points on 1st and JKP 2 for 4 points on 2nd as trio made a cracking start ..although we won't mention 16th...

Going to be some great views from new 1st Green and new 2nd

Ian heads for green on 8th as Coombe St Nicholas viewed in background..just ahead Billy can be heard shouting after his '2' on the 9th...
