28 August 2021

Just heard the sad new of the passing of one of our fellow Seniors Golfers.

Ronnie Sutherland, whom we have not seen for a while, finally lost his
long battle last Night.

I'm sure all our thoughts are with Linda and the family.

Ever the character, Ron ran his Ice-Cream business right up to the very end.

Lived life to the full, moaned about everything...but always had that wry smile to check if anyone was taking him seriously.

Proudly showing his Guinness World Record
for  a line of Whirly Vans

Just heard from Clive that the larger than life ice cream king has passed away.

Not being at the club knowing any current news it’s a real shock.

Always a 100% chap with good direct banter…very sad.

Away in Greece at the moment but when you get a funeral date I would be pleased to know ,but I suppose numbers will be restricted.

Thanks John and if you are passing condolences to family please include me.

Many thanks

David Walgrove

Sorry - missed last2 and I know it's Rod Stevens, not Rob...I met Rod in Car Park and attempted to demean their performance by saying " I see you all failed to make Green on 13th"..to which he replied .."well I just took an Iron off the Tee & chipped in for a 2"....so I left...

Food for thought... G & JKP went through Andy's Golf Prog for Sep thro Dec and identified a few items that we need to adjust due to Course maintenance, Trip to Turkey , clashes etc - we will run by Captain before updating.

One that we need to get busy on is Next Wednesday - The Simmer Sizzler with the Ladies. The Club has allowed a Shotgun Start, which obviously affects other Golfers so we really need to make it worth it - ie clearing every tee for an 08:04 start.

Currently we have just 38 signed up , which is 13 Teams of 3 and just 13 Tees occupied. There is no room for Seniors Roll-Up to take place etc. We suggest that Seniors not wishing to play with the Ladies and take part in the excellent Buffet - sign up anyway so that we can fill all 18 Tee Slots for the 08:00 start. We will find a way ( WhatsApp) to identify who wishes just to play a 2 from 3 Stableford for a separate Comp if required.

So, pending approval from Captain / Vice - can you start signing up for Wed 22nd to help us fill the bookings ( we can accommodate more if necessary as some Tees can easily handle a double start) -  remember it's the only game in town on Wednesday ..but you have to be up nice & early to get to your Tee for 08:00...

Jurassic Challenge @ Lyme Regis

A very nice and pleasant day at Lyme with 160 participants (20 teams of 8). A well organised event with lovely food served after the game. Team CST had a reasonable combined  score of 158 which was 4 short of 3rd placed team, 7 less than 2nd place and 13 less than the wining team. Our team scores were as follows

Mugridge & MacOmish 39

Siabi & Leigh 38

Hinds & Thomas 36 and finally

Davis & Housham 35.

To keep our next year's captain happy, must say he was robbed. He was under 2 ft from the flag at one of the par 3 holes and the last team managed to better that. Bad luck Dave. A dozen Titleist balls are not as useful as the bottles of wine you have been winning in out friendly matches so I wouldn't worry about it and suggest you put it out of your head.

James

SGU President's Trophy, held at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club

CST decided to enter a team of 4 into the SGU President's Trophy, held at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club. The competition was played on Sunday, 12 September, off the Gold tees.

Mark Cording, Roger Davis, Ian Hildred & Dave Mugridge formed the team, with the best 3 scores to count. There were 23 teams competing, with all ages eligible. Some teams were all scratch or better.

The CST team performed very well, especially as 2 of the team had never played B&B and the other 2 only in the distant past.

The team came 2nd overall, missing out on 1st place by 2 strokes. The team were presented with the Windwhistle Cup (rather appropriate).

In the individual, Mark Cording came 3rd overall.

SUMMER SIZZLER

WEDNESDAY 22nd September

The Seniors and Ladies are getting together for a 3 ball Bowmaker on Wednesday 22nd September.

This will be a shotgun start at 8.00am, followed by a Buffet lunch at 12.30pm. Cost is £12.50 per head.

There are still plenty of spaces available, and entry is via the CST club computer system.

There will be no roll up on the day as all tee times up to 12.30 pm have been allocated to this competition.

Draw for teams will be carried out next weekend, get your entry in quickly if you want to play golf on that day

CAPTAIN'S REPORT ON TEIGN VALLEY AWAY FRIENDLY 10 SEPT 2021

Our opponents opted for an unusually early tee time, with an hours drive ahead, we set off just after 8am.    Good job Jim and Ian did so as they had arranged to meet at Exeter with Ian then showing

Jim to the course, as he did not know where it was.   In the bar last week there were conversations about the quickest way to get there and Ian's input was aired.    The pair got there early and were trying on shoes in the pro shop, just about to buy a pair, when the pro asked what time they were teeing off.   Ian slightly surprised answered we are with CST for the match, the pro then informed him that there was no match today at TEIGNMOUTH.    Hastily they made the 40 minute journey to TEIGN VALLEY in 24 minutes with Jim nearly being sick.   Not only that but they then had to make the return journey via Teignmouth to pick up Jim's car,

Aye, well now the name's Lauchlan...not Laughlan !!!

As for the golf, all but a couple of our team had never played TEIGN VALLEY and everyone was complementary thoroughly enjoying the day.   It is basically divided in two by a road with the first part winding its way up a fairly steep hill, not surprising as you are in Dartmoor National Park.   It takes about 7 holes to go up and one very long par 5 to come down,   The second part is flat and follows the River TEIGN as meanders it's way to TEIGNMOUTH  about 20 miles away across the rolling Devon hills.    The clubhouse is very modern and the owner has just started rebuilding the Hotel that used to adjoin until it was burnt down 8 years ago.   Definitely a course to play if you haven't so far.

There were a couple of unusual incidents which got people scrabbling for the rule books, which it looks ended even as one went in our favour but these are just friendly matches.   The food was excellent a choice of Roast Chicken or Ham Egg and Chips with chocolate brownie and ice cream to follow, a round of golf all for £13.00, plus the petrol and golf shoes if the shop was still open on your return visit.

The result.

CORDING & ROWLAND.              WON 4&2

POPE & DAVIS.                             LOST 6&5

 THOMAS & LAUCHLAN.           LOST 2 DOWN...Down the A30..then Down the A380...

Individual Stableford

..as others were taking care of Summer Knockout business with Our Captain and Interesting Davis challenging the highly successful pairing of  Hodder & Hall for the right to challenge Ian & Jim to be Summer KO Pairs Champions.

We passed them going down the 15th, immaculately dressed in Team Colours with the match still very much alive..

We'll keep you in suspense..and let the Captain announce the results.....

Looks like 27 attended the 2 Roll-Ups, with a little dissent outside claiming 'chaos & lack of organisation' -

but inside the locker room all looked well in control and it was only those outside that
had issues..maybe as Pro Shop had advised some to sign up on the roll-up sheet and fill the early slots. Chris G & John W had it all under control for the usual 08:45 Draw, with new Member  Roger Williams making an appearance.
I personally witnessed Ian Fielder rummage in the box for his card, so was surprised after the draw when his said 'Where's my card'..which we found still in the box, so merely added him at the end. Then someone was looking for Ian Frost to go over to 16th be he was nowhere to be found. ..have you worked it out yet ?.....I.F.   had pulled out   I.F. Card  so in fact Ian Fielder was included in the Draw under the name of Ian Frost...
..ok..I guess you had to be there...

JKP Birthday today. (74) .as I sat at desk this morning..found my Steroid pills ( untaken) for Wednesday..wonder if that was why I could barely make it around the course yesterday..and that horrible score..guess I'm not cured yet.

Course Improvements / Re-Design

Hopefully you all got Steve Hill's comprehensive update on the Course Improvements, with lots of beautiful pictures explaining it all on the notice board.  Steve has now ( or just about) fully departed from Metaltech as is to become a gentleman of Leisure like ourselves..so we will probably see a lot more of him around the course, playing hopefully.

He was true to his work on the new holes No.1 and No7 with half a dozen pieces of heavy machinery moving 100's of tons of material between the 1st & 2nd for the new Green & Tee and also twixt 6th & 17th  for the Green & tee - but it will be some time in the future before we are on them. In 2023 we will have 11 Holes this side of the road, which will make a nice little round for those wanting a quick game.

So as you walk up the current 6th, there will be a dog-leg right to new Green and then new tee for shot to old 6th Green which will be a nice little Par 3.

Three Man Yellow Ball 06-09-2021

After a huge amount of discussion about the new rules on yellow ball the 5 later teams eventually got on the tee. We had decided to play as per the instructions so every player had a yellow, but if it was lost then no one could use theirs on the next hole and obviously the person who lost it didn't have one to use on subsequent holes. Our team of Mike Hone Nobby and myself made a great start with Mike playing two great shots to be near the bell in 2, and that's where the trouble started. So we were down one yellow ball and struggling for the rest of the game. The cards were all placed in the Seniors box so await the results from our scrutineer.

Welcome Rob, I'm Colin..may I apologise in advance.....

Fairly warm out there today as our short Indian summer arrived. New member Rob Coombes submitted a card for Handicap playing with the last group after I relieved him of his £3 seniors membership contribution.

Thanks to Chris G for collating the results below:-

Norman

CST Seniors v. Honiton

As Captain Covid was suffering from Tendinitis in his wrist. Vice Captain was called on to deputise and lead team from the front.

The match was played on the hottest & stickiest day for some time, which lead to one of the opposition players feeling unwell and being rescued by Cyd (in a buggy) from the halfway hut. All were glad to refresh themselves at the end of the round.

The course is starting to firm up & play in its familiar summer conditions of fast and bouncy, which caused some trouble for the opposition as tee shots bled off fairways  into the sticky rough, which caused further problems.

This led to an overall match result of:

                                CST 5 Honiton 1

Individual match results:

Dave Mugridge & Roger Davis won 2&1

Barrie Heath & Keith Hunt won 5&3

Ian Thomas & Jim Lauchlan won 7&6

Chris Gingell & Roger Stone lost 2&1

Bob Dennett & Barry Keates won 4&3

Roger Hinds & Edmondo Paoloni won 3&1

Both Nearest the Pins were won, Keith Hunt winning the home prize, getting very close at 16 & getting his 2.

An excellent performance, giving the Vice Captain a 100% record

              Captain's Report on Friendly Match

      V. VIVARY PARK FRI 03 Sep 2021

Vivary Park are always competitive both Home and Away and their teams featured towards the top of the leader boards in both the Charity Invitational Day and the Texas Scramble.   This also meant

several of them had recently played at CST.    Playing on a tree lined course also holds no fear for them, so we knew this would be a close match.    Their handicaps were also on average well above ours and several in the 30's, perhaps a reflection of quite how narrow Vivary is and of course it gets narrower by the year.   For the record we got trounced away earlier in the year one of our worst results.

The weather was perfect for golf hazy sunshine with a slight breeze and occasionally quite hot.  .   Conducive to good golf and most of the groupings had very close matches, except two match ups..

Mark Cording & Derek Gardener.           Won 1up

Barry Keates & Roger Stone.                 Halved

James Siabi & Chris Gingell.                  Halved

Roger Davis & Barrie Heath.                  Won 5&4

Paul England & Keith Hunt.                    Won 7&6

Dave Mugridge & Peter Spencer-Farr.   LOST 1 Down

RESULT BEING A WIN 4-2

The nearest the pin was on the 16th and for first time in many matches it was NOT WON by Dave Mugridge.   So congratulations to BARRIE HEATH for what must have a been a great tee shot to get inside The Captain's effort.

Not only did the Vice Captain not get the wine but he also lost his match,

albeit by one hole, but this is notable as it is a very rare event.

Well done the whole team as we continue the sections match play form, which has been pretty consistent and good this year.     We still have NINE MATCHES this year and the cost is still only £15 for Bacon Roll & Coffee; a hearty one course meal with coffee and a friendly but competitive round of golf.   Surely in today's world excellent value, so more and different names on the sign up sheets would be good.   A lot of work and time goes into these annual matches and it would be a great shame if they were to come under threat.     Given the noise levels at the dinner tables all who play thoroughly enjoy these matches so if you are new to the section or not played in a while come and join the fun.

Knighton Heath Cup Quarter Final

CST Seniors contested the Quarter Final of the Knighton Heath Cup at CST on Thursday afternoon against a strong team from the Isle of Purbeck.

When your lowest handicap players are receiving up to 4 shots from the opposition, you wonder if you might have a bit of a struggle. When the 1st five results were in, things were not looking good as we had only won 2 of the matches.

However, the 5 heroes at the end of the team won all the remaining matches to give a 7 - 3 victory to CST.

Danny Dowell lost 2&1

Dave Mugridge won 4&3

Roger Hinds won 2&1

Bob Dennett lost 4&3

Steve Southgate lost 2 down

John Wandless won 5&4

Mark Cording won 2&1

Chris Gingell won 3&1

James Siabi won 3&2

Roger Davis won 5&4

We now await the draw for the Semi-final.

Well done Team

Dave Mugridge

News Updates:-

Alan Davis:-

Alan looked somewhat better today, Day Five, after a couple of rather miserable days being on a saline drip and oxygen.  Today he aspired to dizzy heights and had a little soup and yogurt for lunch, and progressed to orange squash rather than plain water.  He is still in the "Hospital Property nighty though."

He very much appreciates all the kind thoughts and messages received, thank you to everyone.

With best wishes,

Rosemary Davis.

Hi John, I hope the Seniors Open was a success today. Please can you put a message on your Seniors page.
I could do with more support from the seniors regarding lessons. I had 6 x 30 mins lessons last month from members! Luckily I had the visitors looking after me. The same 3 seniors turn up every week for group coaching. It's £7.50 for an hours coaching and unlimited balls.
Many thanks

As promised, Seniors awoke to bright sunshine..but unfortunately that was Senior Ballesteros and Senior Olathabal in Spain...over here it felt like 10 degrees and pretty nippy..but the warm sunshine did arrive eventually.

Nice to see Ian Fielder back playing with new nuclear eye-drops helping his vision. He scored on 11 holes making a major contribution to their score.

Where were you all you dirty rats !!!!

Martin looks delighted with his drive as in the background..Gordon can be seen just ahead of Chris in the Summer Knockout Match...and that's just how they finished, on the 18th hole.

At 08:45 Golfers gradually arrived, Chris G had everything set up for us, also did the results and calculations which was much appreciated. Vice captain had already slimmed down our Tee-Times, but in the event we only needed 4 of the Dozen left..which was rather strange for this fun format.

Roger Hinds back with us  but  finished 3,3,4,5 against the leaders 5,6,5,5 and drifted down the leader board.

It was all downhill for Bob Rees and his group as they managed just 2 points on the 1st hole and after 9 holes they were already 10 behind the leaders.,

Great front 9 from Mr Bargery & Co..but disaster from 14 through 18 cost them what should have been a winning score...

Health Update:-

How soon things can change in the Seniors Section...Pictured above is Alan Davis, holding his winnings from The Sinners amassing 155 Points in the Charity 4BBB..

....where is he now ?...

His Wife, Rosemary writes...( after I requested details)...

Alan has had a Urostomy which involved removing his bladder . They also removed the remains of his prostate.  They were prepared to do the op because he is fit and healthy and Taunton Hospital said his heart could cope with the antiesthetic.  He is in Exeter Hospital because that is where the trained team and robot are.  All the staff are exceptional.

Yes, he did well at the charity day and was looking forward to several other events, but presumably they had a cancellation for last Friday.  So his wings are clipped for the next three months.

When he is home and getting better, but not allowed out anywhere, we will welcome visitors .

Sunday Update:-

He looked a little better this afternoon, his blood pressure was done while I was there and it was much better than in the morning apparently.  The staff looked rather relieved.  Day 2 is always dodgy.  He was allowed a little jelly at lunchtime and there was the possibility of a little soup at teatime.  Oooohhh!  He even allowed me to take his photograph.

The staff at Exeter are all terrific.

With best wishes,

Rosemary Davis.
