Captain’s update.  ( Sunday)

Tomorrow is a normal roll up at 08.00 or 08.45, the money will now be collected from your account as per the last couple of months.   Our esteemed Treasurer has requested this rather than cash to ease his workload.

The Somerset Senior County Stableford is at Long Sutton a sign up sheet will be in the changing room notice board from tomorrow.   This is an individual competition with a secondary competition of teams of four.   Please sign up as soon as possible and we will draw the teams nearer the time.

 Captain Covid

JKP continues...

I was greeted by Neighbours Mick & Marie Aldridge on my return . Marie said "You missed all the action last Thursday"... As Mick was rushed to Musgrove by a shiny white Van with flashing blue lights...He had gone down with Pneumonia and needed to be wired up to the mains for a few days whilst they sorted him out.

He came back home Monday, but looked pretty weak and  subdued..but with his dark tan looked remarkably healthy. Marie said he may have to rest for some time whilst he recovers under her tender care.

Friday 30th August - Roll Up

A disappointingly small number of Seniors turned up for Friday’s Roll-up.

There were only 2 in the Early starters and a further 14 in the 0845 group - total of 5 tee off times. We have 16 tee times blocked out on a Friday, more on Monday & Wednesday. Whilst accepting that some would have not sent alarm because of the overnight forecast, we do need to maintain numbers to keep our block booking times.

The Seniors Committee have fought long and hard to acquire a good number of tee off times blocked off for the Seniors. We are under consistent pressure from the club to reduce the length of time for the 3 blocks on Monday, Wednesday and, in particular, Friday.

CST, which is a commercial business, would like to have Societies play earlier in the day and, especially, on Fridays. This would also allow other members of CST to have tee times on Friday afternoons.

I also accept that not having the clubhouse open for coffees etc before roll-up doesn’t help but we have to have the numbers for the 0845 Roll-up to strengthen our argument with the management, to open up at 0800. We can only win that argument by weight of numbers turning up and, if and when they do open up at 0800, purchasing coffee, bacon rolls etc, to make it commercially viable for the club.

It is a “chicken and egg” argument, but we can only win the argument if we turn up in consistently large numbers to preserve our block bookings.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT OF BREAN AWAY

                      29 JULY 2021

The course continues to improve with more infrastructure and investment.   It has a great deal of water in the form of cross and side ditches plus ponds.  Today we had a couple of players new to the course and much in need of their yardage equipment, but unfortunately one pair could not get their watches to work.   The course was renumbered after the lovely new clubhouse was built and this proved too much for Messrs. Davis and Housham to recalibrate.

Norman and Barrie had a convincing win and Dave and Ed a hard fought victory against a very strong pairing.    The other pairings all had very close games.

The company and catering were both excellent.   We had hand carved roast rib of beef with all the trimmings plus vanilla cheesecake with fruit plus coffee.   All for £15 including the golf, great value for money.

Jubilee Salver Texas Scramble

Captain's Report

Great to see a good turnout for this trophy event.

Barring a couple of showers generally the weather

was again kind to us.  The start sheet being ‘shrunk

to fit’ by JKP worked very well and the field all squeezed

out.

Obviously being one of the winning team restricts

my comments but as a three we didn’t do a lot

wrong with 6 birdies and no bogeys.
The whole

field recorded under par scores and there must

have been some disappointment when the scores

were announced.

There were six twos each paying £1.55, so we’ll

done to those teams.   Chris DQ’d one team who

did not leave a card in the box.   TO REITERATE ONCE

AGAIN OUR SECTION REQUIRES FULLY

COMPLETED CARDS & SIGNED IN THE SENIORS

CARD BOX.

Thanks to John Wandless & Chris G for setting everything up and finalizing the results, doing the calcs etc...

..by the way, Chris G requests any Trophies are returned asap as we creep up on the AGM and engraving is required. You've had them 2 Years now, so no complaints...

Yes, bit of everything from bright sunshine to darkness and short sharp sqalls

Wow, that's some card..not a single blemish...

Card was nearly matched by Farmer Bob, Jolly Roger and Bob Dunnit - with 6 Birdies
but bogies on two of the Par 3's cost them Silverware...mind you they did score "2's" on the other Par 3's to even things up.

..a Team that can never be ignored...Fair Chance, Good Evans  & Popey...Bogies on 15th & 16th  saw them tumble down the leader-board

Tatty looking, prickly and needing a good trim and tidy-up....The Gorse bush on the 11th Tee frames Bryan, Nobby & Dickie building their usual competitive score....

8-Handicapper Paul Taylor booms on down the 8th, which Chris measured at 270 Yards...unfortunately they were forced to use JKP drive which to be fair was somewhat shorter....

..bit cruel but he can take it...Peter was back to his old form today helping his team to within 2 shots of the winning total, with Danny Dowell and Mark the Sander...

Monday 26th July 2021

Dear John W, JKP and The Section,

This is an open letter for the blog.

( Ref Wednesdays Competition)

Not sure what all the fuss is about, both JW and I controlled the numbers.

Given the recent very low turnouts for both roll ups and friendly matches, it seems a poor

show to complain at a trophy competition that is slightly over full.

We have had generous tee slots over the last few weeks and very few people turning up.

If the Section does not use these slots there is a very strong chance our slots will be reduced

or even removed.   So members need to individually try and support all Seniors events.

Cyd and I, plus JKP all seem to agree that with some sense we can get teams out ahead of their tee times to accommodate all.

We always try to be inclusive and accept all whom wish to enter, but as JW states this may

have to be reviewed.   So enter early and as often as you can.

We are unique in the area for having such an active Section but we all need to play our part.

   Apathy is a dangerous thing.

Many clubs locally have very limited roll ups and organised events with seniors having

to book 7 days before at 7am.    So no socialising what so ever.

Just bear that in mind before complaining.

Our new ‘ready golf’ scramble rules are designed to speed up play, so please all play

your part and try not to delay over the first few holes on Wednesday and

keep the play moving.

As a foot note our recent match play form continued today.

 We won 5 1/2 to 1/2 in actually a very close match with T & P.

Each match was very competitive but home course knowledge seemed to play its part.

Well done to new member and friendly rookie Barry Keates who helped Roger Davis

win their match.

Derek Gardener also achieved a spectacular 2 on the 18th, yet still didn’t buy a drink!

But also he did not need to collect the fees.   First time in a while isn’t it Derek!

Cording & Dennett              Won 2 & 1

Davis & Keates.                    Won 2 & 1

Stone & Barrow.                   Won 2 up

Gardener & Housham.       Won 4 & 2

Paoloni & Hunt.                    Halved

Mugridge & Heath.             Won 3 &2

A great result against a very strong opponent let’s hope we can keep the momentum going in the remaining friendliest, the Knighton Heath and SSB competitions.

Mark

Roll-Up still taking place downstairs as not much point going aloft as nothing opens until 09:00 as they continue to struggle with Staff Numbers.

6 Players in the Early Draw , then in the gap, a tasty looking Summer Knockout as Andy Rowland & Chris Rudling took on the mighty Paul Taylor & Chris Gingell - Paul fresh from winning £100 in the Seniors SGU Comp. We think there were about 6 shots in the handicaps, and  RudRow used them to manage a fighting half on the first couple of holes. Next thing we heard was that they had managed to keep fighting to the end, securing an amazing 4 & 3 Victory, taking out the hot favourites.

Thank goodness you are left-handed Chris.....

..It's  Muggo in the next round..but luckily he is playing
 with Peter 3-names

Latest update from James Siabi

Updated as Wurzell Gummidge & Dickie knocked our Sir Clive &  Able |Seaman Beale AB...

Meantime 24 Lined up for the Scramble, 7 Drives each, 35% (l) and 15% (H) Handicaps - with Bunkers GUR.

Mike was excited about being able to lift out the pins & hear the ball rattling in the hole...

..Looks like MacOmish is over the hill !!!

yesterday by yours truly.

Monday’s Foursomes was won in convincing manner

by Messrs. Davis & Hunt, congratulations both.

the pressure putt caused problems.

Yesterday’s all to count Stableford was a much closer affair

with one point covering the top three places.   This time there

were no twos so we reverted to Birdies.

We also welcomed two new members Dave Hannaford 25.1 and

Barry Keates 14.5.    Both of whom won money and apparently are very useful off their respective handicaps.

The roll ups have reverted to normal with draws at 08.00 and 08.45

but numbers are very low.   Obviously Covid and the heatwave may be

the cause but it would be nice to get back to our normal level of support.

The Club monitor our playing numbers with a view to restricting or changing our block bookings.   It would be sad if we lost these slots through apathy.    Please try and play within our allocated block tee

times where possible.

The teams  for T & P on Monday and BREAN on Thursday are posted

on the notice board and will soon appear on the blog and

Jubilee Scramble Wed 28th July
Looks to be 'Fully Booked' with 39 Players signed up and only 13 Tee Times reserved. Not sure why they have reduced from our normal 16 on that particular day, although a swift
Captain / Vice could probably grab a couple more that are still free...now 42....45 and rising..need Tee Times...JW on the case...

Wednesday 21st July 2021

Please put a note on the blog on KO matches. All round 2 matches MUST be completed by 23rd July

26th will be the last day they can conclude their matches or teams will go through on toss of a coin unless one party is responsible for the delay in which case the other team will be put through

James Siabi

Please..before you go into writing on Email & WhatApp...It's very tough organising Comps in the Seniors Section at the best of times and we are really grateful for those that stand up and organise them. Seniors have many reasons for delaying, cancelling, re-scheduling etc and Covid certainly has not helped...

....or will you be the one volunteering next Year to take over next Year ?

JKP

Vice Captain Writes:-

On Tuesday afternoon, we played in the Knighton Heath Cup against Ashley Wood GC.

 We won all 10 matches.

 Results below:

 Danny Dowell won 3&2

Dave Mugridge won 3&2

Bob Dennett won 2&1

Roger Hinds won 7&5

Steve Southgate won 6&4

Mark Cording won 5&4

Gordon Brent won 4&3

Roger Stone won 4&2

Bob Barrow won 6&4

John Wandless won 8&6

The opposition appeared to struggle with the very hot weather and our slopes and hills.

An excellent result for CST Seniors.

Paul Taylor sets the pace with 9 Pars and 4 Birdies to set a challenging target for the rest of the 3-Day Competition.

Passed Billy Hilson on 9th and 13th where he scored 3 points on each...printout of results were blurred so not sure what his final total was....

REPORT ON FRIENDLY V. SIDMOUTH AWAY

Fantastic weather and stunning views over Lyme Bay, The Jurassic Coast and Portland.     A gentle sea breeze kept us comfortable on a hilly course.    We fielded one of our youngest average age teams for sometime to deal with the slopes but unfortunately they could not read the greens, despite the advice that the ball always runs towards the sea.   The two Rogers and PSF had buggies but the rest have bigger calf muscles than before we started.

The course showed signs of the recent rain with the fairways and greens being as receptive as they could be in Mid July.   However this failed to help us to win the match.

Results from memory as I lost the team sheet.

 Cording & Holmes  WON 2 & 1

Davis & Hone.  WON 2 & 1

Stone & Gingell    LOST 1 DOWN

Housham & Dennett LOST ?

Gardener & Rowland  LOST 3&2

Mugridge & Spencer-Farr  LOST 5 & 4

Normally the worst team collects the money but in this case an exception was made as Messrs. Gardener and Rowland lost against a single golfer as his partner's Mother was rushed to hospital.  She was apparently in her late nineties, so obviously our pairing were over sympathetic.

The whole team also failed to hit the 100 yard par 3, which was our nearest the pin.

So the wine was raffled and Roger Davis was the winner, yet failed to add it to our next charity raffle.    On a slightly worrying note my Vice Captain looked distinctly unwell after the round, having had a recurrence of his debilitating illness.

We also had an interesting homeward journey as the main road was closed at WeyCroft Mill, leading to a diversion via the back roads to Cotley and we were not the only ones trying to take the shortest route.

A358 Axminster to Chard -

Liable to close any night until 24th.

But a really good day out.

Once again thanks for all those that stepped up to fill gaps, if you've not played in a Seniors Friendly, add your name to the list on the NB - they really are a good day out and great fun.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Following several cancelled joint events with the Ladies,

Donna and I have arranged a Summer Sizzler for the 09th August.

The Club can not provide a BBQ but there will be food afterwards and a prize giving.    It will be a shotgun start reasonably early but yet agreed, so there will be no roll up that day and the course closed for several hours.   Places will be on a first come first served basis so names by email or what’s app please.   A sheet will also be posted in the changing room.

Roll up times will from Monday 19th will REVERT TO JUST THE TWO TIMES 08.00 & 08.45.

Mark

Well what a lovely day for golf and 90 pts shows the course is very playable.

Well done to the winning team and for Chris Andrews for ramming in a two on

the 9th.    Much to the amusement of the blogmeister the Captain missed a two

on 16 and 17, actually three putting for a par on the latter.

The Team sheet is posted for SIDMOUTH tomorrow and it is casual dress as no

showers.    But bring your Speedo’s as we are all going to the beach afterwards.

Team sheets are up for T & P at home and BREAN Away, please get your names

down early.

Over 60 now booked in for Friday Comp.....but still room for you if you book on line or phone the Pro Shop

Message from Young Rod...

Can you post a note on the blog for me? I understand more fellow seniors access this than the WhatsApp CST Seniors link.

"I will donate any of my gains on Friday - winnings or raffle - to the SURE charity. This is a worthy cause and as with last year efforts has been affected by lockdown.

The Comp gives us an opportunity to demonstrate an alternate approach to the distribution of funds returned to CST by the SGU, which as I understand it is roughly £6 per head.

I invite other Seniors to make a similar commitment. Perhaps we could encourage each other to do so?

Of course any abusive comments about my capability to win anything will be treated with disdain...as usual. "

 Rod Young

 Thank you

Rod joined now by Sir Clive...

Nice one Rod - I'll donate any gains I make - JKP
Probably send a stronger message to club , shows resolve and principles, but of course I am not taking such a rsik as you, except the raffle as I tend to be a lucky bugger...

Texas Scramble and Knockout Matches

Please make sure you are up to speed with Friday 16th Details. Club has cancelled our Roll-Up and installed a 3-Day Competition , free to everyone, where the refunded money (£2580) - from The Somerset Golf Union will be paid out to members. Even if your Golf is bad - if your luck is in you may win some of the Spot Prizes.   You can enter On-Line or just contact the Pro Shop.

Nearly 40 Seniors are already booked in, but plenty of spaces left. See INTERNAL COMPS for more details and some of the issues raised about how this refunded money has been decided. The Comp is running all weekend, but you can only enter once.

Time for Politics is over..let's just join in and have some fun with the Club and maybe earn some money...this should be good news, so let's not work hard to turn it into something negative.....

Captain’s Report

Near perfect conditions created some excellent scores.   The winning team had 9 birdies and 2 bogies both on the par 3’s.  The bogies were offset   by two 2’s the first one on the 2nd where James hit the flag and bounced to about a foot.   It could easily have been drinks all round.    There was a card claiming another 52 but the computer and scrutineer adjusted this to 54.5.     I am awaiting

Comp to be closed and payout worked out but the twos payout will be £3.50 each.

First out was Derek, who had to give Clive 9 Shots . He confessed to me ( in confidence, so don't tell anyone)..that he had checked Clive's last few rounds and worked out where he was vulnerable...but would this attention to detail pay dividends  ?

Nope...Clive played his socks-off and was Victorious by 2 Holes...now plays winner of Housham / Jewell in Round 3...

Also in action were Chris Gingell & John Sweet - very even as they both played of 14, excepts John's was a mirror image ( 41) so received 27 Shots. We saw them striding up the 1st, where Chris would need to make Par to beat John's 8...

Just tell me the total at each hole & I'll do the Maths....

Texas Scramble

Around 8 or 9 Teams competed, with Jeremy & Co setting a good early target. As we left, the Comp was still open and Vice Captain still to finish, but as the Skipper, with Mark Barry, James and Martin  came in claiming 9 Birdies..we had the feeling that their 52 (tbc) was the leading score..with two '2's' as well.

Err...over here Ken.....

Farmer Bob makes a 5 on the 3rd...although Dickie calculated a Birdie 3....

Pearcey won't notice we're playing the 15th.......

Brian & Co in the long grass of the 10th...

..and finally..Roger demonstrates a chip to the 11th Green....well he got there eventually.....
Go to Full Screen & keep hitting the Play button...even the low handicappers can do it....

..sorry Roger, Chris made me do it.......
