Dickie and I have been planning the reintroduction of the regular draws.   As we have missed out on 6 draws, there will be a SUPERDRAW, with 6 fantastic prizes including:-

  • A professional bouquet of flowers worth £50;
  •  a dozen quality golf balls;
  •  and a DAY WATCHING THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP AT TAUNTON FOR TWO PEOPLE (and it's not compulsory to take the Captain, but he does like cricket).

  •
  •   The full prize list will be published soon, but please start handing over your cash immediately.

 As we still have to work within Covid guidelines, you simply need to offer money to any committee member or Dickie and I.   There are no tickets but for £5.00 you will get 5 random numbers, £10 gets you 12 numbers and £20 a massive 30 numbers.   The numbers will be published in advance and the draw will take place after one of our competitions.

For those new members we have to thank Dickie ( & Jenny) for raising many thousands of pounds for the Captain's charity in recent years

This year my charity is Sure which is completely run by unpaid volunteers and provides radio therapy and other equipment to the Cancer Unit of Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.

This year has seen a massive reduction in the emphasis on Cancer, so Sure are positively delighted that they are this years beneficiary.

Please dig deep and make a contribution to fighting Cancer in our local area and helping many of our section both now and in the future.

On Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May, we are holding the rescheduled Senior Captain's Charity Day, please keep this day free in your diary.   I am holding back a few top prizes for this day and obviously would love prizes; donations or suggestions for the day.    There will be some added fringe benefits for all, so do not miss out on this fun day.

 CANADIAN GREENSOMES 31 March 2021

Another very pleasant day, the rough is down; the greens are semi-holding and the scores were reasonable.   From my own experience and looking at some of the scores, bodies and particularly backs, may not have been ready for two days golf in three days.

Now for the moan, please do not rely on the computer.   Please ensure your cards are fully completed as per the sample cards we produced last year.   Several cards today had no names; handicap indexes; combined handicap allowances; date; competition; tee played from and even no total score.    We have been fairly lenient but this will not continue as it takes us hours to sort this out.    Today one of the winning teams had no names, incorrect handicap and no total score.   As it turns out when adjusted they went from second to out of the places.    But this took Chris Gingell far too much of his valuable time.    You are responsible for your own cards or in pairs at least check what your team mate has recorded.   Under Covid we do not need signatures but if you do not do your bit, you will be disqualified.     Do not rely on the computer.

We have heard via the greenkeeping staff, that plans have been made for the replacement holes.    This is still unconfirmed by the owners but the old green on the 13th will be an extra par three played from a tee on the right of the existing green by the fence.     The first will be a par 4 with the green straight ahead where it once was.   There then will be another hole played to the existing first green.   Plus an extra hole somewhere on the 6th.   No doubt all will become clearer in the next few weeks.

Congratulations to the winners, again a good pay out especially if you are Paul England who benefited handsomely from Ian Hildred's solitary 2 on the 16th.

My copy and paste function is playing up so the full result will appear later.

The March Hare

We are back!

Of those who played, everyone appeared to have survived the breakdown in good health.    Our thoughts and best wishes goes to those who are not so lucky.

Well we managed to get the March Hare in March and what a lovely day.   The sun came out, the golf was as expected a bit mixed, but 43 points is a great score after such a break.   We welcome two new members John Baker and Martin Jewell, but the latter broke all the rules and won the trophy.    Rod Stevens obviously managed to continue the form he showed before the lockdown.   Martin joins us from Sherborne and immediately got his feet under the table.

The course was in good condition and once the new growth comes through the sand, the greens should be excellent, as they were last year, especially with the new irrigation. There was some interest in the work that had taken place to the old green on the 13th.   It appears Steve Hill has sold his business Metaltech and that the work on the 8th, 9th and 10th may be soon to start.

There was just one two recorded by Vice Captain Mugridge on the second hole, he earned himself and Roger £14.00.

1. Rod Stevens / Martyn Jewell.          £28.00 each

2. Alan Chance / Bob Rees.                 £16.80 each

3. Bob Barrow / Norman Markby.        £11.20 each
