Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades.' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck.'

Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to 'go sip some ale' and listen to people's conversations and political concerns.. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.'

*******
At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the term minding your 'P's and 'Q's

One more and betting you didn't know this!

In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations.

However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys.' Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.

Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.' (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you.)

Saturday and the snow is trying to fall again, but warming up next week...wouldn't it be great if we could just start playing again soon as we have achieved most of the goals...

We
had felt Somerset was doing rather well with the vaccinations, and this from the Health Service Journal seems to confirm it..so great job to our local health care professionals.

few odd things coming in, with another Couple getting Jabbed, Gordon & Sally Brent  down at Seaton, where they say it was very well organised & hope to be back playing soon.

..although one member sounds a note of caution...

The coronavirus infection rate is falling in every region of the UK except for the South West, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The percentage of people testing positive in the South West rose from 0.91% to 1.12% in the week ending 6 February, the most recent date for which data is available.

While the ONS cautions that small movements where infection levels are low should be interpreted with caution, the figures raise questions over why infections in the region are not falling in line with the rest of the country.

Over the same time period, the percentage of people testing positive in London fell from 1.85% to 1.5%

Still trickling in...

Hi John,
Mary and I received texts from our surgery  on Tues. And had our vaccinations yesterday at Dillington House.
As others have noted it was a slick and smooth organisation. As yet no side effects or mutations have occurred.🥶
Derek Gardener ( 65-70)

..plus 'young' Richard Holmes as mentioned previously.

Henhayes at Crewkerne continues to set the pace, with Victor being our first  on Dec 24th..and now first to call those 60+ so well done over there.

News from Sir Clive, who writes :- Had my MRI scan last night, contrary to popular belief, they did find a brain!

Cheers Clive

He adds .....John you must put this on the blog! We have their consent.

We gave them 2 gold medals.

Hi John,   Could you publish this list please and my comment below

As we enter our 5th week of Lockdown, there is lots of good new around...with every graph heading steeply downwards.

Gov are now saying, that if you are 70 + and have not heard anything - then go straight to the NHS Website and book in - it's dead easy - just need your NHS Number.

Book a coronavirus vaccination - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

..as we see our first fit & healthy 69 Year-Old getting called and booked in.

Hi John

Just to let you know Val and I had our vaccinations yesterday at Axminster Surgery We got the Oxford one All very slick well organised heard someone say they do a 1000 over the weekend More than happy with the side effects the nurse told me the jab puts 50 yards on your drive 😂😂😂😂😂

See you all on the 22nd March - Johnny E...

Hi john myself and Jill have just had the call up, going into the gateway in Yeovil on Friday, I’m 69 so all going well. 👍  Roger W

...and Chris H..yes I have had it, in Crewkerne, the jab I mean quite painless

But it's not all about Covid...have you been keeping track of the new Dementia Drug that has everyone excited ?

An antibody that can almost completely clear the visible signs of Alzheimer’s disease from the brain has been discovered in a breakthrough that left one scientist “trying not to get too excited”.

Researchers scanned the brains of people with the degenerative condition as they were given doses of the drug, which is based on an immune cell taken from the blood of elderly people aged up to 100 who showed no signs of the disease.

After a year, virtually all the toxic “amyloid plaques” that build up in Alzheimer’s patients appeared to have gone from the brains of those given the highest doses of the antibody.

The scientists, who described their results in a paper in the journal Nature, also said the patients showed signs that the rate of their cognitive decline had slowed/

It's called  aducanumab.

Just think for a moment whom we have lost in the Seniors recently to this horrible disease..probably more impact than covid..

Mike recently lost Wife Gracie and of course Bim with Helen who loved being up at the Club as much as anyone.   Gareth Jones, Tony Fairbanks, Keith Harper .

The sport was so depressing on Saturday that we have to show this from Keith...

Saturday

A bright but chilly Saturday dawns and the Jabs are still flying in. Great many 70-75 being done, so if you are 75+ you need to take some action to get sorted.

The fit , young (73) Chicken Farmer just called in reporting his Jab at Henhayes yesterday. On Monday - he is heading into Shepton for a hernia to be sorted out. His nightmare is to to see the Golf Course Open, the Sun Shining, The Grass Growing..and then being called in - so he grabbed this opportunity to get it sorted & recover.

Richard also informs us That Bob & Barbara Holly have been vaccinated at Morrisons, Maurice has also been done in Chard.

Chris Hiam also at Crewkerne

Rod Y reports:-

Tick for one more. First jab yesterday for Sue and I after a call from Blackbrook  Surgery. Not the race course after all...

Cheers to everyone.   Rod

..as does Jimmy Mac...

Afternoon John,

Linda and I have had our first jab at Taunton Racecourse this morning, very slick and professional.  Booked for April for second dose.

Stay safe and keep up good work with Blog.

 Regards

Jim Mac

Nearly a quarter of adults in Somerset have had first Covid vaccine

Nearly a quarter of adults in Somerset and Dorset have had their first vaccine dose, according to new data.

Among adults in both health systems, 23 per cent have had a first dose, according to Health Service analysis of NHS statistics. The average figure across NHS health trusts in England is 18 per cent.

 Best wishes   Dave  M

John ,had my jab today in Ilminster....so very pleased.

Just as well no golf tomorrow as buggies would be off!!

Cheers to one and all

David  W

For the record pleased to advise just had my first jab at Morrisons in Yeovil.

Before anyone starts, despite having three names I was only eligible for

one vaccine shot!

Pedro.

Pleased to have had vaccination No.1 today. No obvious side effects so far...Mad Mike

OK, she's pretty good, young Grace - some even thinks she's amazing but every time she gets out those flipping Bagpipes - people start crying - which is not great considering how much money they all forked out, something should be done about it..

Thurs

Andrew C and Roger H join the list of those anointed, lots of Emails flying around about booking directly via NHS Website, but Blog has to stay neutral on this one and you all make your own decisions how to proceed.

Golf     Poem

In My Hand I hold a Ball, White and Dimpled, and Rather Small..

Oh, how Bland it does Appear, This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.

By Its Size I Could Not Guess the Awesome Strength It Does Possess.

But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell, I've Wandered through the Fires of Hell.

My Life has not been Quite the Same,  Since I Chose to Play This Stupid Game.

It Rules My Mind for Hours On End;  A Fortune It has made Me Spend.

It Has Made Me  Curse and Made Me Cry, and Hate Myself and Want To Die.

It Promises Me A Thing Called Par,  If I can Hit  it Straight And Far.

To Master Such a Tiny Ball , Should not Be Very Hard at all.

But My Desires the Ball Refuses,  and does exactly as It Chooses.

It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,  and Disappears before My Eyes.

Often It  will Have A Whim, To Hit A Tree or Take a  Swim.

With Miles Of Grass on Which To Land,  It Finds A Tiny Patch of Sand.

Then has Me Offering Up My Soul, If Only it would find the Hole.

It's Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,  and Swear that I will give It Up.

And take to Drink to  ease My Sorrow, But the Ball knows .. I'll be back Tomorrow.

This Ode was sent by   Paoloni - loves any sauce with Macaroni

Wed 3rd and letters increasing---

from NHS telling us to book via NHS Website directly...all you need is your NHS Number.

..goes on to say " You can chose to await a letter from your GP - and ignore this letter"

.

Ken Trott had  his Saturday, I got my letter today (JKP  73)) - but I had the Vac a week ago when I booked directly. Mike ( 70) & Denise are playing it by the book and are off to Taunton Racecourse Tomorrow.

should expect a lot of Seniors now being called and helping to improve those numbers.

Ray saw the local NHS co-ordinator heading off to work a few days ago , where he had organised his bingo machine to draw the Jab names..but had a wee problem. hence the delay !

I was fortunate to have had my jab a week ago as it enabled me to donate my 102nd pint of O-Neg Blood over at Broadway yesterday...anything for an excuse to go out in the car...

And real Golf News from Norman Markby....

Hi all,

The year is gradually moving on so just in case we are released from lockdown it would be advisable to start preparing. You will notice a change to the prizes and the final which Mike and I agreed some time ago. It is proposed that the final is paid for from a combination of the surplus of the entries fees of each round with a top up from Mike if necessary. Please feel free to suggest alterations to the wording as required.

CHALLENGE CUP 2021 First Round Teignmouth

It may be that we are back on the golf course before the end of March,(possibly, maybe, who knows?) As the first round of the Challenge Cup is on the 23rd March at Teignmouth Golf Club we need to be prepared in case it can go ahead. So this is to invite entries for this event, the cost will be £34 each to include 18 holes plus coffee and bacon roll on arrival. As opportunities to play have been limited this year I wouldn't be surprised to see a large entry and as we are limited to 45 please get you entry in early to secure your place. you can email me at normanmarkby@btinternet.com or send me a Text / WhatsApp Message with your name!! to 07736 250036.

For those new to the Seniors Section the Challenge cup is a friendly individual stableford comp held over three rounds at away courses. This year there will be prizes for the first three places at each event and the winner from each round will be invited to play with Mike Light (instigator of the competition). in the final which will be held at a 'challenging course' of Mike's choosing.

Mon  1st

Hi John

I had my jab on Saturday morning at the Meadows surgery in Ilminster and Jenny had hers this morning at the Taunton racecourse. I had the Pfizer jab and Jenny had the Astra Zeneca  jab. Both were very well organised.

It's the first time we have taken Vaccations in separate resorts ...

 Cheers

Ian Fielder 75+ Group

Hopefully by now everyone over 80 should be complete and a great deal of the 75 plus - maybe you should let us know if you have not been called and maybe we could help...

1st February and Day 28 of this Lockdown - and amazingly NHS managed 600,000 Vaccinations yesterday...wait for it...

That is

9 Jabs

every Second !!!

..adding to our own count  were ...

Hi John

Despite earlier confusion (it seems that the letter from NHS and the text from the Meadows came out in tandem) I had my vaccination at Taunton Racecourse this morning. It was extremely well organised, efficient and slick - very impressed. All involved are doing a great job.

Cheers   Dougie Oliver

and in the next Day or so, CST's youngest and most glamorous jet-setting couple are booked for Wednesday as Nick confirms the 70-75 Groups are now  being called.

Hi John

Over 70s are now being  asked to make appointments. Rosemary and I are going to Ilminster on 3rd Feb.    Nick

Best Graph of the day is showing the really key info of how many people are being squeezed into Hospitals each day  falling nicely, which must be a great relief to the NHS.

Sad to hear about Capt Tom being admitted - disappointingly he has not yet had the vaccine due to suffering from pneumonia - so let's hope they can sort him out....one thing's for sure the NHS   will be using every trick in the book to keep their hero alive.

Sunday

Make that 8, 374, 940  jabs as rate increases and EU put in their place... would have been 2 less without  Paul & Roger...

Hi John

I  had my jab at the Meadows Surgery on Saturday , I jumped in the air and clicked my heels together, I couldn’t do that before.

Cheers

Paul England a mere sapling at  73...

a little more refined was Roger,

Hi John. Just had my. Vaccination.

Feeling great.
Hopefully see you soon

 Roger Davis

Saturday

Quite a few added to Seniors WhatsApp Groups by James Siabi.

Lots of dates coming in:-

March 8th   Mike Hone - Ever the Optimist
March 11th  Dickie Hall
March 22nd  John Evans - had a word with Dominic !
March 27th  Edmondo - consulted his horoscope
March 29th  Roger Stone
( All above on WhatsApp Group)

Apparently Canines are now being vaccinated, but due to limited supply, they are hidden on a rooftop with an arduous journey to get there..so no complaints about Human Centres being a bit busy...

    hi john.

Jackie and I had our jabs yesterday in  Yeovil, navy personnel were doing the injections, we had to go in separately, when we met up outside she told me that she had just been impregnated, by a royal naval commando, its ok for some. Blog is great keep at it..

                                                                                                                                                                 Mike Dawson

Just had the jab at Henhayes, and when I handed the young lady my NH number she said not required. I told her Mike Hone said it was needed, she said "WHO"

Fantastic service Astra Zeneca - in and out in 10 minutes   - Ray G

Also feeling a prick were JKP, Norman, Chris, Roger S  etc  great to think by mid-Feb we will be pretty well covered....have to make our 55-70 members play in a separate group ..any ideas on Acronyms...EGGS is the Elderly Gentlemen Golf Society....maybe something like YUCCS....Young  Unvaccinated  Corona Case Spreaders....

OK, you may have seen this before..but it demonstrates why those of us with almost zero hand-eye go-ordination will never be any good at glof...or typing...

Feeling a bit nervous today about what we post as yesterday caused some controversy from Members, feeling we were bucking the system
Strange that all the new Mass Vaccination sites around us are now operating at way below their capacity if you look at the Gov data......
..so today will be a quiet day on the Blog....

I grabbed a Jab at 08:45 today..to me, it's simply a matter of Life or Death !

Wednesday - have we hit the peak ?

As deaths pass 100,000 and the daily count hits 1,600 - which is the normal Tuesday hike, we still have optimism that things will now improve as Vaccinations will pass 7 Million today and confirmation that most over 80's have been done. Many are several weeks into it and if  results are confirmed - should be spared the most severe symptoms if they do succumb to the virus. In the Seniors, we have had a dozen twixt 75 - 80 vaccinated.

Don't print the Seniors Contacts yet - about 20 updates have come in so a new list will be issued shortly, really appreciate all the feedback.

..several have also asked to be added to the Seniors WhatsApp Groups which I will pass to James Siabi ...whatever happened to him ?

Lots of interesting snippets coming in, including a chatty one from Frank & Alyson..

"Hello John & Seniors,

All good with us. Had jabs last week, care home all residents and staff jabbed, Covid free...yippee.

New address  .....Langport.... ( we will add to Contacts sheet)

We love our new home, this will be our forever home in England. Still in love with Portugal, new house still in abeyance, hoping to get there ASAP.

Joined Long Sutton, it’s five minutes away from our new home, CST is fifty minutes...guess that tells you something.

 Warm regards,

Frank and Alyson."

Dougie Oliver had a strange one...

I had a false alarm on Saturday when I received an invitation from the Meadows in Ilminster to book my vaccination only to receive another message a few minutes later withdrawing the invitation! Didn’t even have time to get excited!

Not sure why this happened - maybe I am not as old as I look!   Dougie.

John Andrew, 84 and a Member at Windwhistle Hill  since Nov 1974, serving as Club Captain in 1991, tells us:-

Hello John. Gloria and I had our jabs on 12th  Jan. We came from Curry Rivel to Ilminster.

Just had a thought when Steve & Jackie renamed the Club, why didn't they call it

"The Windwhistle Hill's Golf Resort" -

Amazing what you get if you do a search on the Internet:-

Windwhistle Hill on the A30 is a hotbed for supernatural sightings, according to one UFO researcher.

Gloria Heather Dixon, from the British UFO Research Association (BUFORA), has uncovered many tales of "strange lights, sounds, figures and shapes, unusual and eerie phenomena" on the stretch of road between Crewkerne and Chard.

She has connected alleged UFO sightings on the mysterious hill, "named very aptly because of the winds whistling through the tall treetops", with the area's history of highwayman, smugglers, a dead witch and even the devil itself.

  Feature in today's Telegraph....

You couldn't make up  this stuff   ....
Concern that Plymouth Hoe sounds too much like the pronunciation of an African-American name for a Woman of Ill repute....

..I guess come December Santa will be in trouble as he says it three times.....

Unfortunately, Billy chose to ignore our advice on the Blog and avoid hazardous DIY Jobs and tackled a Bonsai Tree out in his garden, with horrible results...

Few more updates as Barrie & Lorraine Heath ( 75) are booked in for Thursday. No rest for Barrie as he then has to have a Covid test before going under the knife for a quick 'cosmetic' Op...all this with moving into their new home in Chestnut Avenue, Crewkerne.  Not too impressed with their new Post Code.....TA18  7 DQ

others on the move are Farmer Bob & Margaret who are now beautifully settled in their brand new home in Axminster...10 miles closer to the Golf Club.

I'll send out an updated Seniors Directory shortly.

Handy tip from Mike Hone for you:-

Gents,  I don't know if you had the same problem but when I looked for out NHS numbers all I could find were our NHS cards from 1964. These showed  numbers consisting of letters and numbers, not the 10 digit number which is required.

A quick call to our surgery elicited the correct numbers, but I think it would be worthwhile giving
people a 'heads up' on the blog....

should look like   475 053 5431    10 digits no letters.

Regards Mike

Just in Baron Philippe de France has been pricked..

"Hi All,  Hope you are keeping well. I had my jab last Saturday at the Ilminster surgery. Really well organised. Can't wait to get back to golf.

 Phil  Hunt - a youthful 77 !

Tuesday dawns as the snow melts away..hope the EU threat about Vaccine supply does not delay things as UK cooking on gas..but we have enough to complete all over 70.

Nice call from Bryan Frost who says he is quite enjoying the new relaxed life...Got a text asking him to attend Henhayes where the Oxford magic potion was administered. He was getting worried , being 81, that he had been missed but now happy as Larry.

Another to come in was from Egg-Man Mike Banfield....

Hi John.

Was contacted by Tawstock medical centre at 10.30 and jabbed by  6pm (  Oxford vaccine). Lower 70s now being called. Wife still waiting for call.

                                                      Regards Mike B.

We are sure there are several of you out there that we don't know about and we respect your privacy. Only publish names / details where you indicate you are happy to be published by your newsy submissions, which are always welcome.

Guess who is 70 today.....

" I'm expecting a call for my jab today now I'm well into my 70's....."

Monday 25th..

Daily Cases definitely on  the downturn..despite another 300 Idiots at a London Rave yesterday..

..and the experts tell us Deaths should turn 2 weeks later...

which looks like we are about there..
..

Hope to see 75 to 80 Year olds start to get called for Jabs this week......

Hi Clive,  ( Passed on to Blog)

Hope you are continuing to improve. It’s not the weather for long walks so just be careful when you are out and about.

I’ve just finished a wasjig puzzle which we borrowed from Nes, it took ages to do but that’s the point I suppose. On a more upbeat note we both had our vaccine jabs yesterday, at Tawstock, roll on round two.

Being left handed, Penny & I had to follow different arrows at the entrance to get our arms in the right position for the jab, and met up at the exit which worked great.

I want to tell the blog , how and who do I contact? I thought you would know as you’re usually on it somewhere under Sir Clive...

I see its snowing again – blooming stuff.

Take care

Terry and Penny  Hackling - Terry is a mere 76, so the age is reducing.

JKP took Diana to Taunton yesterday, driving through the snow proved no obstacle as we arrived 30 mins early...failed to blag myself a jab but Di was in and out in 15 Mins as she had the Oxford variant...one thing to bear in mind, no point arriving miles ahead of your time as they have good control of the process.

Sunday updates:-

Morning John,

Rosemary and I had our vaccinations yesterday evening; there were quite a few CST members down there as well. Quite  a queue when we arrived but very slick operation and didn’t take very long.  Keep safe and well.

Alan Davis

It's Snow Sunday as we have a light covering everywhere, with some major road closures overnight as it was very icy - hopefully  things will clear a little this morning.

Few more Jabs yesterday, with Bob Rees (77) breaking the record for Notification to Needle....as Donald would say "by a lot"..

Hi John

Was contacted by Summervale Surgery in Ilminster at 10.30 this morning by phone. Midday appointment and jabbed by 12.00. Oxford Astra Zenica vaccine.

Lots of people there in the queue getting done.  Bob Rees (Just over 77)

...with Mike & Sue Burt joining the Jabbers..

Hi John,

Sue took me for my vaccination today at 12.30 to Tawstock medical centre, Sue was booked in for 5.30.    A very nice lady in the car park asked Sue what time her appointment was and immediately went and asked if she could have it done at the same time as myself.   Couldn’t ask for better service.

 Regards Mike,

As mentioned below, I'm driving Diana to Taunton today ( weather permitting) - so will be armed with my NHS Number to see if I can blag-a-jab myself if they have cancellations..see how important all those snippets you keep giving us..keep them coming.

What lovely people there are around, today's TG -

Poor 80- Year Old, thought she had a food parcel arriving and in they came...

Saturday 23rd.

Hi John,

Just for your update, Sue and I have both had first jabs. Sue went to Ilminster, Meadows and I went to Tawstock this morning.

Both were very well organised, Sue is batting for Pfizer and I am batting for Oxford..

All the best

Tony Church..78 not out !

John, Val and I  had a call from Springmead surgery  chard Friday afternoon asking if both of us could attend Tawstock surgery in Chard today Saturday at 6:10 pm!

They are wanting couples.

Looks like someone is well organised!

And Val’s only 42!....Sir Clive....being very Gallant

Our 3rd Saturday arrives and Lockdown appears to be on track, with just the 'Death' figures requiring a week to catch up.

How frustrating for us to give up so much when a Jewish Wedding Party with 100's takes place in London - should be a jail sentence as the probability is that someone will die as a result of it. Lots of incredulity in Seniors WhatsApp about Taunton Races shutting down the Vaccinations Centre for a day and losing 1000 Inoculations.

Couple more Seniors Bookings, with Jolly Roger Stone ( 75 3/4 ) - booked for Henhayes on Wednesday - where he will see Ray Gudge who is attending on the same Day.

I'm off to Taunton tomorrow with Diana  (Jab ) - with just the forecast Snow and the road closure near Barley Mow to deal with..anyone know if we can still get onto the Taunton Road just past the Barley Mow or do we have to navigate through the dangerous village of Combe SantaClaus ?

All sounds a bit naggy above..so you deserve 2 minutes of tranquility - along with advice on how to have a good roll in the mud with your Girlfriend,  methods of entering the bath when you are a bit stiff, how to get attention and of course when you see the perfect hat..just go for it...all clean fun and suitable for your other half to watch with you...

Ahhhhh....

Stupidity ?/?

SOMERSET’S only mass Covid-19 vaccination centre is closing this weekend - to allow for HORSE RACING to go ahead.

..now we know we have many Racing fans in the Seniors but REALLY !!!!

Nick H reports:-

I walked up the lane past the 12th tee today. It's covered in grass - looking good. Then onto the 11th green. All the divots from James's "putts"  have gone.

I had a zoom session with the Doc 2 weeks ago and noticing my double chin ( I blame poor posture at my PC) - he suggested I should try a 10-Mile walk every day...which I have been doing religiously...

..Yesterday he contacted my on my Mobile asking If I could pop in an take a blood test as he had a spare 30 minutes......" You must be kidding ", I replied.....

.." I'm nearly 140 Miles away  "....

...I'll explain later Nobby ...

Sir Clive reminds us that last night there was a unique milestone...

Tonight at 9:21pm it will be 21hrs 21minutes 21 seconds of the 21st day of the 21st Year of the 21st Century!

on the mend, will ( cleverly) time my recovery to coincide with the first day of golf.

Eric also noted that event on Whatsapp where all the Seniors 'Funnies' are being posted -- have you joined the group yet ?- but a warning as some of the postings are not for the faint-hearted....

Wednesday dawns and jabs increase, although we get the feel there are more out there we don't know about.

Farmer Bob, at a tender 78 has his booked for Seaton on Monday.

It was funny as he left home yesterday and curtains in Colyton tweaked as he loaded up his Golf Buggy & Clubs and headed off on his normal route...

..but he was just doing 'removals' as they near completion of their move to Axminster.

Bob was telephoned by his Practice to book his Vaccine.

Further news from Malcom Roy who wrote:-

"Came 2nd in the vaccination stakes at Taunton Race Course today and feel better for it already..
Can thoroughly recommend the arrangements there.   Regards   Malcolm"

As an ace reporter, I asked for further info and got the interesting additions..which make great sense...

" No I am 81 but Jill who is obviously  younger had her over 70’s letter the morning of my jab.

The organisers at the racecourse allowed her to have her jab with me even though I had booked her in for the 27th.  "

Well done to Taunton, save an extra trip and unnecessary risk.

Mike Hone as been following closely the latest petition to get Golf re-started which easily got the required 100,000 signatures.

A precis of the Gov reply is:-

" No government would want to be in a position of needing to close sports facilities including golf courses. Golf has great reach across society as people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can take part in the game; it brings people together to experience the outdoors and enjoy nature. Golf courses were one of the first sports facilities to be reopened following the initial lockdown and they were also able to stay open in the local tiered restrictions, including tier 4. However, the current spread of the virus risks the healthcare system becoming overwhelmed. This is something we cannot allow to happen and is why the current national lockdown was introduced."

....just to be clear, this is DJT, not  MH taking things badly....

Couldn't resist this one, from a German Care Home, where Vaccine is limited so the Ladies have devised a test to see which Men are worth saving...Brain Function, Heart, Digestive System etc...Thanks to Birdman Ray...

Edmondo reports:-

Hi Taunton experience last night :just perfect : cannot fault the organization /planning / service/

was informed race meeting is off due to rain !!!!!!¬  ( Private Joke)

I was also approached by my local surgery in Crewkerne ( for a different date)( but  my doctor said ignore it if you have already one direct from NHS - my second one is booked for the 6th April - we had the Astra Zeneca - felt  slightly dizzy this morning  but recovering well this afternoon all is good - keep well and safe .

Edmondo

Age is dropping as Bim Morfitt is now booked into Taunton Race Course next Thursday, same day as Tony Stenhouse.  Bim is a sprightly 78, but may well have had a 'Medical Upgrade' ..although Billy H replied "I didn't know that being  a Curry Addict was a Medical  condition "

Hi Seniors

The Turkey Trip has had to be rescheduled and we are looking at late November 21 or February 22.

We have one spare place .... or if 5 more fancy a week of golf and 5 star hotel we could expand the group.

All Inclusive please contact Mark Cording or John Wandless.

 Mark

..you wait ages for a Bus , then 2 come along...

Diana got the NHS letter Monday and duly booked at Taunton Race Course, just like Edmundo & Jacqueline, Tony & Jacky etc..

..now today a Text from Springmead Surgery inviting her to book a Jab at Tawstock Centre.( one-off Clinic on Saturday) ..tell you not to phone and if you click link, only option is to book another Jab or select "I do not want a Covid Jab" - this could cause more anguish and confusion...wonder if Nick knows the answer ?... opted to just ignore for now...

It's Monday ands we reach day 14  and the buzz continues..

Hi John,   just been catching up with seniors web site.   I had my covid jab first one at Ilminster on Thursday 4th Jan. the second day of the health centre opening for covid. very well organised. Janice had hers on Wednesday 13th Jan.  it seems that Crewkerne health centre was well in advance of others!! people having their second already.

Keep safe.    Regards Geoff Dean, a sprightly 86 !  ( Chard Resident).

Hi John
Have got my jab at Taunton race course next Thursday at  10.25 and my wife same morning
Quite easy to book
Hope it goes ok
Regards
Tony & Jacky Stenhouse...( Shepton Beauchamp)

..and our first update from Devon....

Hi John

Some good news from Devon.  My next door neighbours,  both in their early 80s,  have been called into Axminster surgery for a jab next Sunday.  Looks like we are on the move.  A few others ( I have been told ) have had both jabs at Seaton Hospital .

Happy days.  Keep up the good work 👍🏻👍🏻

Regards John  Evans

No jab for JKP yet, so spending as much time as possible outdoors...but not sure how impressed Diana was with my latest creation using old coconut shells from bird feeders..water is supposed to cascade beautifully from the top...but may need  fine tuning..

..nice to see lots of bulbs emerging and the snowdrops are out already...

Now we are up and running as Letters beginning to arrive..Sidney writes a nice note below, expect many more through the week..keep them coming please.

325,000 Vaccinated yesterday

Hi John, pleased to tell you, wife & I received our 2nd jabs last Sunday. Carried out at Henhayes Centre Crewkerne when some 500 attended. The organization was 1st class, one minute intervals and including the compulsory recovery period we were out in 20 minutes.

God bless our NHS!

Keep safe and well, all the best, spring's just round the corner. Sid.& Pat Crisp ( Crewkerne).

Letter also dropped into the Pearce Mailbox as Diana was invited to book in at Taunton Race Course.   Simple Phone Call or visit to Website gets you your 1st & 2nd Jab dates confirmed.

Taunton start on Monday, With Edmondo & Jacqueline being some of the first, they hope to do 900 a Day...  ( Crewkerne)

Come back Ed...your  Italian Skin was too thick for a standard UK needle...

Saturday

90 Year old Victor Gane reports...

Lot of chat on the blog about COVID Jabs and Somerset falling behind Dorset. As an old retired member can I just  say  that I had my second jab on 8th January at the Henhayes Centre Crewkerne. Feel very lucky as many are waiting 12 weeks for second jab.

Best wishes to all,   Vic.

( OK, no need to rub it in, Vic)

..and just in from Edmondo..

Hi John got my  covid jab booked at Taunton race course on Monday the 18th (also for my wife), but she's 30 mins behind in the Novice Stakes...-cheers Ed

Things seem to be moving as daily jab rates increase every day

Just been reading in the Chard & Ilminster about a 92 Year-Old that has heard nothing...

but Sir Clive tells us that his neighbours in Chard, both 80 plus just has theirs in Ilminster, which seems to be our Main Centre at the moment.

NHS are talking with Post Office about using special Blue envelopes for the 500,000 letters that are going out very soon, they will be an invitation to apply for your Vaccine..but at least it's a a start.

We are finding it hard to believe that no  Senior  in Somerset has been jabbed yet ( apart from 1 NHS Responder) - are you not telling us  ? ...plenty of ways to communicate...see Seniors Committee Page for contact Details.

Some good news to be found around, such as new Dementia Drug that was announced yesterday.  Donanemab  is apparently really good at slowing down the onset.

Covid Figure for new infections also look promising, see graph.

First number to drop has to be New Cases...followed a week or so later by admissions and deaths, so middle of next week we would hope to see those numbers following suit.

but unless we are just not getting the info from you, we are way behind the curve with Vaccine in Somerset .

Many thanks to those that have kept us informed.

As we are glued to the screen with Covid  around the World, and the Political turmoil in the USA, ..maybe we should pause for a while and think of how future generations will label us..as we mess with our one and only chance of keeping our fragile world...

oops - Blog in trouble again....

Morning John

Sorry but I must take issue with your blog item about telephoning surgeries about the COVID vaccine.

In the surgeries where I work, the girls are spending nearly half their time fielding phone calls from people asking about the vaccine meaning that others with a genuine need to contact the surgery waiting extra time. It is not 'waffle' as you put it. The vaccination programme is being co-ordinated from defined locations and not the surgeries. It is a massive programme and not everyone can be vaccinated straightaway. Could I please ask everyone to be patient, you will not be forgotten. Please comply with Government and NHS England advice and DO NOT phone your surgery.

Thank you

Nick

Trusted Person's  Card

Thousands of people now depend on others to do their shopping, withdraw cash and pay bills on their behalf because of the pandemic.

But this has put them at a greater risk of fraud. Last year, there were 29,180 concerns raised over financial abuse, according to NHS records.

And if you hand your bank card to a neighbour and tell them your PIN, your bank will not be obliged to refund you if you are defrauded.

Yet many banks now offer cards for carers — special accounts that allow a trusted individual restricted access to a person's money.

Most Banks now offer this, not a good idea to hand over your own card. Did you read about the Grandson who empties Grannie's account to pay his drug  debts....

Just had an interesting chat with an 86 Year old Senior, still playing regularly. As usual waiting patiently for the call, until his Daughter took executive action...  phoned the local Practice and after a load of waffle, finally admitted they had tried to call him on phone, no answer and that was it, they moved on down the list.  After the intervention they had great service - booked to Digby Hall in Sherborne  for last Friday, which was very well organised.  Pfizer Jab completed ( with Wife as well) - 2nd dose booked for 19th March and all is well....so despite all the waffle about not calling..if you are in the top age group, don't leave it too long before a gentle reminder.

Really appreciate these calls as we can't keep rack without you.

Salutary Warning

We are hearing from Hospital Insiders of  major changes and some dire warnings - with face-shields now being compulsory for all staff, even admin , and shrinking facilities.

Please think carefully about undertaking any activity that could require you to seek medical help - it could cost you your life !!!

  • using power tools, especially with blades
    • Nail Guns, Circular Saws, eye injuries
  • climbing ladders
  • slipping on ice & snow out walking- clearing snow
  • shopping - interacting with infected people
  • unnecessary driving - and what you may meet or encounter
  • heavy lifting
  • opening packages - anything with sharp knives
  • slipping in bathrooms

The Doctor will see you now Sir  !!!

SIR CLIVE HAS IT CRACKED ( OBVIOUSLY FEELING BETTER)

John, in view of the statement below,

I’m promoting  "Course Golf "

I’ve attached a  golf ball to my  fishing rod and will cast from the 1st Tee. Should be able to get beyond the corner . A shorter rod should get me to the green in 4 .

Covid-19

Statement from the Angling Trust: Update January 7th 2021

The Government have now formally responded to the representations made by the Angling Trust. We have promoted the huge benefits of fishing on individual health and wellbeing and have been able to present a case to which the Government have listened. On this basis I am pleased to announce that fishing will be permitted during the third national lockdown in England.

The DCMS Sports Team confirmed the following:

“fishing is allowed as exercise so long as participants adhere to the rules on staying local, gathering limits, social distancing and limiting the time spent outdoors”

Cheers

 Sir Clive

..if you are a tad queasy,  DO NOT do an Internet search on 'Fishing eye-injuries'....

..it's  pretty horrible...why did I do it ?...JKP

"A plea from NHS staff. Please please please make sure you and your family all dig out your
NHS number and have a copy of it it immediately to hand for when you or they are called for the COVID jab. From my colleagues on the front line this is far and away the biggest bottle neck when it comes to administering the vaccine to as many people as quickly as possible.
You can find your NHS number on any NHS correspondence or through the app .

Edmondo

Also beware:-
The Scammers are about - Never give any bank details or Pay for the Vaccine -
give one of us a call if you are in any doubt.
Thanks for updates on Vaccine, we have our 2nd Senior who tells us he had his 1st Jab 3 weeks ago and Tomorrow gets the booster...but he is over 90 - but things will start moving very quickly now and we appreciate any updates. Remember, unless Seniors vaccinated starts to increase, Golf will be most unlikely as it should mirror the rest of the UK.

Below is another Scam - don't do it !!!!!!! - do not follow any links....ASK SOMEONE IF UNSURE

..now just tell me you Mother's Maiden Name and  I will  rob you f***ing blind  !!!!!!
