CAPTAINS XMAS MESSAGE

On behalf of the Committee, myself and my family, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Xmas.

My Captaincy started in a slightly unusual manner, as we were unable to have an AGM, however all but the weather has so far gone well.

David Mugridge accepted the role of Vice Captain and so far the responsibility has not hampered  his golf.   If you have not met either of us before, please introduce yourselves when you see us about.

Hopefully, it will not be long before some social events can be held and we can meet our newer members and their Partners.

John Wandless, Stuart Pope and Myself are currently working on the four opens for next year and sincerely hope these will be held outside of Covid restrictions.

Barrie Heath has worked hard organising the Inter Club matches and Dave and I are very much looking forward to improving on past captains results.

The schedule is published and with a very busy summer program, we are looking for as many of you as possible to want to represent the club.    The matches are all fairly local and whilst highly competitive always great fun.    A round of golf and dinner afterwards all for about £15.00, excellent value in today's times.    Please let us know if you are interested in playing.

Your personal copy is available from the Treasurer on payment of your £3 Membership.

Our popular roll ups have been shelved and for the foreseeable future we will need to carry on entering online.    To make JW's life slightly easier please enter early, we need to set closing dates and whilst we always try to accommodate late entrants, it is not always easy.

In bad weather, particularly when buggies are banned, many changes are needed so please bear with us.

There have recently been several incidents of players deleting their whole team from competitions, instead of just themselves.   Lisa and John are seeking a solution but fundamentally, if you cannot play, please phone the pro shop first thing in the morning.    We are endeavoring to maintain team games during bad weather but may have to revert to single play on occasions.

My charity for this year is SURE, a locally based organisation, that is run by volunteers with 100% of fund-raising going to provide equipment for the Cancer Unit of Musgrove Hospital, Taunton.

Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment

Dickie Hall is contemplating restarting his draws from January and how to arrange this within the rules, so watch the blog for details. The £80 raised by the recent Gingerbread House Auction, is an example of how we are having to adapt. Great Job Mr. Hall and of course all of the 'Bidders'

I will leave you with a somewhat apt ditty from the wonderful and much missed Spike Milligan.

                                             Smiling is infectious,

you catch it like the flu,

When someone smiled at me today,

                                              I started smiling too.

                                         I passed around the corner

                                         and someone saw my grin.

                                         When he smiled I realised,

I had passed it onto him.

                                         I thought about that smile,

                                            then realised its worth.

A single smile, just like mine

                                         could travel round the earth.

So if you feel a smile begin,

                                          don't leave it undetected.

                                        Let's start an epidemic quick,

                                          and get the world infected!

Let us all stay healthy, enjoy Xmas  and hope for a better 2021.

                      Mark Cording

                    Seniors Captain

The Timberlay Cremant de Bordeaux is listed in the Times as one of the :-
The 40 best wines for Christmas 2020 and is not cheap:

This is really good cremant - foamy moussey bubbles, dry but not aggressively acidic, and freshly yeasty without tasting like you're baking brioche in your mouth. We've been so impressed by these, but unfortunately so have some media wine writers so the price is likely to escalate soon.

.

The heavy overnight rain, on top of the already saturated ground, unfortunately meant there were no buggies.   A little juggling and some fortune allowed us to have exactly the right number for 9 fourballs.   If we were horses the going would have officially been soft and with the strongish wind made it a particularly tough back nine all in all a bit of a slog.    The blog thought the winners would be under 20, but that was impossible to achieve.

Our handicap guru also made a prediction, that scrutinising the cards might prove difficult, this one was proven to be more than accurate.    All nine cards were scored differently but more concerning was that most were encoded.

I brushed off the enigma machine and finally verified the cards in with a  chance of winning.

There were still some handicaps missing which would have lead to disqualification if on the podium.

Given the previous confusion and the need to convert your Handicap Index into your Course Handicap for the day,

PLEASE ENSURE BOTH FIGURES ARE ENTERED ON THE. CARD.

Another card raised an interesting question, as either an Ian Howditch or Ian HILDRED played with Messrs. Chance, Beale and Rowland, tough to verify handicaps if the name is not right.
