4BBB Stableford

Blast from the past

My apologies for not replying before but we have been very busy trying to get ourselves organised and the Christmas / New Year period was particularly hectic.

I really appreciate your email and good wishes. I hope you are well and enjoying life.

The move has been quite challenging both physically and mentally and we don't expect to be totally straight until the end of January. We are pleased we made the move when we did as it would be even more difficult as we get older. It is great being nearer the family as we are able to " pop in " rather than travel 110 miles up the A303. So our reasoning for the move is justified.

I have not played golf since we left Somerset and in all honesty, the only thing I really miss is the Windwhistle / C.St T Seniors and the genuine friendships that I made with my fellow golfers. I have joined Bradfield College golf club. A delightful 9 hole course that is kept immaculately. I intend to start next week, weather permitting. I don't expect to meet such a great group as I played with at W.W. and the fun I had playing there.

Please pass on my regards to the boys and wish them well for 2020.

Thank you again,

Gordon & Phillipa Bareham
( Message was to Ray G.)

A fairly reasonable golfing day saw 38 seniors turned up for today’s 4BBB format. With Neil Cochran from the early birds and Andy Rowland who volunteered from the late group to play monthly rolling stableford. Neil informed me he couldn’t stay behind to play with the late group as he was sharing a car, hence opting to play the rolling stableford.

It has become a regular occurrence that early birds are not checking their cards properly before signing them. For a 2nd successive round we had issues. This time Gordon Brent was on the receiving end as his 2 on the 9th was marked as a 3  which lost his team the share of 2’s prize money. Rod Young & John Evans scooped £18 between them. Please check your cards properly to avoid such outcomes.

The winners today with a mighty score of 47 points were Rod Young and John Evans ahead of Gordon Brent and George Willerton 44 points (B6), Mike Hone and John Pearce taking 3rd place with 44 points (B9) and finally Bob Rees and Chris Hiam also with 44 points (B6)

Extras

Great that Buggies were back and Roger was able to play 18 Holes. Mick, Ted & Bert played the Top 9.
As Captain says above, nobody wins with card errors and it's poor old Bob who has to be 'Mr Nasty' . It is all too common in 4BBB to lose points as scores are put down under the wrong player etc - Gordon's Team had done everything right in the 'Marker's ' column but I guess not cross checked against their marked card. I've heard people say they think it's rude to 'Check the Card'  but I'm sure the marker of their card feels just as bad as the players do. It was a double whammy as a "3" was marked down instead of the "2" a point was deducted as 3 for 3  became 3 for 2.  Golf Rule 6-6 is very specific. There was some talk about Roll-Up being a 'Fun Game' - but we've learned the hard way over the years and Bob has never deviated from the 'Correct Gross Score' rule.

Great to see Ian Giffiths back and competitive.

We had a great tussle with the Pope/Martin combo going down to the last putt on the last hole as Mike complained I was putting too much pressure on him as he is now 70 !
Stuart is enjoying a hiatus as he is booked to have his left knee replaced in a month or so.
Frank hit some great shots, such as when an errant drive on 15th put him on the 7th Fairway. He then reached into his bag, cleaned a minute spec of Pao De Milho from the fifth grove of a 7-Iron and stroked it to the back of the green and was putting for Birdie.

38 new 'Seniors Cards' were added to the Roll-Up box yesterday as most of the hand-written and double -sided ones were retired.

Other reports of dear old Des Denning who continues to struggle health-wise had dropped 5 stones during his latest battle, but maybe some signs of recovery.

Jenny Hall is now walking with just a stick and improving daily.

Vice Captain Mark stood at Roll-Up and thanked Seniors for the much-improved Pitch Mark repairs on the Greens, well done. He further requested we now focus on some of the huge Divots on the Fairways, caused whilst the ground is so soft. A well-trodden-in lump of turf stands a good chance of fooling the Crows in their search for tasty morcels.

Frankie was up there for a Meeting with the Handicap Committee to conduct the Annual Review - so watch this space for some long awaited adjustments.

It's too sensitive for me to make a comment !

With Gunfire all around us..it was nervous every time we passed an open hedgerow as shooting season continues....

My new Knee will have a built-in 10 degree angle.....
