15 Hole re-arranged Scramble
Waking to see only the top nine open, seemed to put many seniors off. However the 3 early birds and 13 later starters found 15 holes open by the time they arrived at the club.
The weather was actually good, with no wind or rain and the holes that were open played well. Despite the heavy rainfall in the past 36 hours there were still several main greens to play on.
Given the low numbers and early uncertainty the early birds played a stableford and we followed with a Texas Scramble, played under 'ready golf rules'. Quite simply you do not need to wait for the player whose ball you choose to play to play first. The first player to reach the ball can mark it and play their own ball, in other words you can play in any order. This allows for such things as tapping in puts and if you are not teeing off (if you've got your drives in) waiting up the fairway and playing first. It was well received and seemed to genuinely speed up play. Scrambles should technically be fast but rarely seem to be in reality.
The scores were good with several birdies shared amongst the first three teams but their thoughts of wealth were ruined by the last group in with the single 2 to scoop the huge pot.
Gross. Nett.
1. Mike Hone, Norman Markby, John Evans 57. 48.83.
2. Chris Gingell, Mark Cording, Bryan Frost, Bill Hilson. 57. 50.40
3. Bob Barrow, Roger Davis, Chris Hiam. 60. 50.67
4. Bob White, Nobby Hodder, John Pearce. 60. 51.17
The weather looks set fair for Monday and our last roll-up before Xmas, so let's hope for a bumper turnout. If we don't see you have a very Merry Christmas from James, Mark and the Committee.

As Clive , Mark & David strode through
We were soon blessed with early sunshine and no sign of wetness above
We certainly knew there had been rain as 2nd Green was quite flooded and glancing down over the Somerset Levels, there was quite a lot of visible flooding.
Nobby forced to hoof-it drawn with Bob White setting a target of 51 for the others to beat
We are so lucky up at Cricket that even after torrential rain on Thursday, we were happily playing Golf in fair conditions, although 8 Temporaries were in play. Bob striding up after his great Iron to the Green on 7th.
Playing really well was Team 3 who were to be the only ones to break 50 !
The much fancied 4-Ball on 12th and Billy Hilson testing his shoulder for the first time in competitive golf.
Due to their speed, Bob & Co held the lead in the Clubhouse for nearly 27 Minutes until Johnnie Evans placed his immaculate card onto the Umpires Desk,Just in from Norman, indicating that his Team's Nett 48 was not beaten by the 4-ball and they hung on to win today...and giving us a lovely shot of Mike's face for some future ridicule.
Normally this picture would have made the front page but we liked the scenic one better and we didn't want to scare Mike's Grandchildren...
Roger presented Billy with an early gift..until noticed they were Penfold ball who ceased trading in 1979..but he must have used them from what the Vice-Captain said...
Some great little one-liners came out today.
Like when 4 foot 2 inch Billy was asked if he was playing replied 'Only if you're short' -
Or like when Stu Pope arrived at the 19th with lovely hot Sausage Rolls baked by Maureen, as Norman remarked 'Didn't Mo's party go down too well then Stuart ?' - dangerous words Norman..they were lovely and much appreciated.
Big Tony leads the Eggs around in tight formation as they did the top-loop a couple of times and were very Gentlemanly as they let several groups go through.
