County Seniors Stableford 2018
5 th  October 2018

The County Seniors Stableford, the final competition on the County calender, was held at Wells golf club on Friday 5th October.

Eighteen  Senior players from CST represented our club. The weather was again really good with little or no wind and rather warm conditions. Winter rules were in force, although of all the courses that we have recently played Wells had plenty of green grass fairways, however due to recent course maintenance, the greens were not quite up to their normal high standard and were rather slow to putt on. The only down side to the day was that when we arrived to the area around the 11TH Tee we were inundated with ladybirds, which then seemed to stay with us for the remainder of the round, their attendance was most likely due to the late warm weather in October.

The last team to complete their round comprised John, Chris and Trevor who had played with Stuart Pope competing in the October Rolling Stableford. Clearly they were in awe of Stuart, who despite “missing 4 birdies” (yes 4 birdies) set a new target of 47 points. Volunteers will be required for the Rolling Stableford for the remainder of the month.

Great News. Andy Chisnall is back in charge of catering at the club. He will no doubt raise the standards we came to expect from him.

With this in mind, you are invited to the Annual Dinner on the 2nd November.

Come and support your Captain, Barrie Heath. You will find the menu under the "AGM and Captain's Dinner" tab on the blog.

CST Seniors in Dramatic Avalon Rod Ford Semi-Final

Having secured our place in the end of season Avalon Rod Ford Trophy by winning the Seniors Avalon East League title, CST Seniors were drawn against the winners for the past 2 seasons, Enmore Park GC.

News that some of their team had played CST on Monday to get familiarised with the course, and some had taken the day off work to play in the semi-final, meant that Enmore were taking the match and our senior team seriously.

Early news filtering from the course was not good, as CST were down in all matches. But one thing you can say about our seniors is that they will battle to the end.

First match out, Bob Barrow and Roger Stone were on the point of losing 5&4 but managed to get to the 16th tee 3 down with 3 to play. Roger then birdied 16 and 17 to go down the 18th 1 down. Bob was in the front greenside bunker in 2 and Roger 20 feet from the hole also in 2. An up and down by Bob was good enough to take the match to the 19th hole. (every match must be played to a conclusion). Bob, in typical fashion, down the middle, over the corner, onto the green, 2 putts, wins the match for CST.

2 :0

Next out Dave Mugridge and George Wallace were 1 down with 2 to play, but a birdie on 17 by Dave left the match all square going down the last. With George in trouble, Dave hit a hit tree and ended in a virtual unplayable lie in the bunker. Unable to get up and down, they lost the match 1 down.

2 :  3

Danny and Nick Clarke came up against a couple who were in imperious form, and with Danny unable to give 12 shots to a former single figure golfer, lost out in the country.

2  : 6

Needing to win the remaining 2 matches, next up Roger Hinds and Ian Griffiths were 2 down with 2 to play. With Roger birdieing the 17th, again another match went to the last. Solid pars from both CST players won the 18th and sent the match onto the 19th.

..in progress...

Last match out, Chris Gingell and Mark Cording were also 1 down on the 17th tee. Chris birdied the 17th hole but was followed in by Enmore's Somerset County player to halve the hole. A good drive and second on the last left Chris 12 feet from the pin. Needing to birdie the hole Chris's putt finished agonisingly on the lip, and they lost 1 down.

2 : 9

Roger Hinds and Ian Griffiths would have won the 19th hole as their opponents were in trouble, but as Enmore had secured the 3 wins they needed, they were called in, and a diplomatic half was agreed.(aka Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin).

3   : 10.5  plus 2 for most games won.

Although the season has finished with a loss, the CST Seniors Avalon League team have announced their presence as a force to be reckoned with next season and in the future.
