What would Roll-Up be without controversy, pretty boring I imagine !
18 Holes open, 2 Temporaries and no buggies. Couple of light showers but quite mild.
Anyway, 8 Early birds with Malcom & Bernie doing individual, followed by another 6 9-Holers with the 09:00 Brigade, Ken, Mick, Keith, Geoff, Brian etc - and they would have really struggled walking 18 as most came in pretty knackered with the boggy ground.
Another 22 for the Roll-Up with Chris B graciously pulling out so we had 7 groups of 3.
Heard a few stories during the round, like Trevor asking for his 7 iron to be passed as he was up on a hill in the bomb crater on 7th, took the shot, hit a tree and then discovered that Colin had passed him his SW instead ! - Mind you Colin was no better with his own Clubs as he inadvertently picked up his chipper instead of his putter to gain another Farmer Bob bollocking. Another shot of note was Mike Burt attempting a 40 foot putt from under a tree on 16th that rolled up rather short !
I was pleased with myself on the 10, making a Par for 3 points & was checking cards to see if I was alone...until I found that man Hilson again who scored 4 points !
Phil Hunt was a revelation today as Frank was talking him into accepting another couple of shots on his 28 handicap, when Phil stepped up a gear and made Par on 8th, with points on another 8 holes to make a valuable contribution to our mid-table 65. Frankie is now 100% Cricket St Thomas Member as he's signed off from his other 9 clubs.
Did you read about owners of Wentworth that want to reduce Membership from 4000 to 800 and have demanded from the 800 selected few a £100,000 payment to secure their ongoing Membership.
Also heard about new Paul Deeprose Golf Academy at Henlade that opens at the 'Swingrite' Centre.
Anyway, the results have changed after a conversation between the Adjudicator and the Vice-Captain who agreed that an error on one of the Teams scoring 72 meant the card would have to be withdrawn from consideration, which was unfortunate as the points were correct.
So the Treasurer and his motley crew claim the spoils today, despite a miserable 31 points on the front Nine , a 7,9 finish saw them power ahead of the field to take the win from a strong finishing Farmer Bob and his partners.
Usual cuts for First & Second. Birdies were worth 0.90p each.
