Captain’s Drive in – 23rd
January 2016
This year’s Captain’s drive
in competition was a four ball Texas Scramble, played over 18 holes on the main
greens, for the first time this year. Twenty four teams, with a shotgun start,
completed the course in about 4¼ hours – not bad considering the size of the
field.
The winners by 1.2 shots were
Paul Gamble, Trevor Paul, Anthony Roy and Terry Rutherford scoring 56.3. The
best placed Senior team was Nick Hill, Frank Martin, Nobby Hodder and Andy Beale with 60.8, followed by Bob Barrow’s and Roger Stone’s teams.
Following the match, a
delicious stew was provided and enjoyed by all (except those who don’t like
gravy). During the meal, a considerable amount of advice was offered to the
Senior Captain concerning the drive in which followed shortly after.
In the event, the three
captains, Steve Holt, Barbara Wilton and Nick Hill managed to move the ball
reasonable distances off the tee, although the Senior Captains effort was
described as closer to a wedge shot. Nevertheless,
Ian Fielder correctly placed his peg nearest the spot where the ball landed and
so won a bottle of champagne.
I would like to thank
everyone who came and supported this event and hope that we all have a most
enjoyable year.
From Barbara
I’d
just like to send my thanks to you all for your support in so many ways over
yesterday’s Drive-In.
Chris,
Carole and Rosalie were great playing partners in the Texas Scramble and put up
stoically with my indifferent play throughout the morning! Particular
thanks to Chris for doing the card! Sue, Iris and Rita (the wife of our
Club Captain, Steve Holt) did a magnificent job selling pegs to the crowds in
the hour or two before the Drive-In. I gather trade was brisk and people
were wonderfully generous – I don’t have the precise amount to hand, but from
what Steve told me, I think over £200 was raised, which will be shared between
our three charities. This is a terrific result.
It
was so good to have so many of you there for the Drive-In itself – I really
appreciated seeing you! And thanks also to the ladies who weren’t able to
be there on the day but who sent encouraging emails beforehand; it all helped
to keep the nerves under control! In the event, each captain’s tee shot
was good, so there was relief all round.
Congratulations
to Steve and Nick for what was a thoroughly successful and enjoyable day.
And thanks especially to Liam, Dave and the green staff for working so hard to
ensure that, despite the awful weather we’ve been having, the course was in
such good condition for us. And last but certainly not least, to Tess and
all her team for such an excellent meal afterwards.
Thanks
again to you all and here’s to many more ‘shared’ events.
