25th September - Fastest ever Round of Golf - at Cricket St Thomas
We were getting desperate for bodies to man all the holes as I dragged Robin; Nobby, Farmer Bob, John & Mairi Wandless and myself out to cover the 4th Hole. The attempt was on to try and break the record set by Mike Wilkes of 14 Minutes and 17 Seconds to play 18 Holes of Golf , covering at least 6000 Yards.
On each Tee were big hitters with rows of balls teed up ready to go. 1st-4th Holes - which would be played 4.5 times. At each selected spot were other Golfers and on the greens another half dozen on each.
So when Steve Holt sounded his Horn, Wife Jackie started the clock and Aaron Crabble smashed a ball across corner on 1st...and repeated it until guys & gals by the laurel confirmed he had made it ands then drove it to green. The moment it was in the hole the shout was 'In the Hole'; and a new ball was smashed from the next Tee. The Seniors party were given the 4th Hole to Chip & Putt it home after Mark Drayton drove it past the humps, for Sam Bennett to progress it to Green for Nobby, Robin, Mairi, Bob etc to sink it and trigger next drive from 1st. John W and Myself were short of green ready to chip.
So we had to repeat this 4 Times for each round. It was funny to see Bob sprinting around the green to chip or putt it holewards. Bob, Nobby Robin etc had minutes before been sat quietly in the Dining Room enjoying nthe Captain's after dinner speech for Match with Long Sutton - so they hhad Jacket & Tie, normal shoes etc.
Their efforts were much appreciated by the Men's Committee.
We made 2 efforts to break the record, both succeded. The 2nd one was slower as it was getting dark and hard to see a 300 Yard drive coming towards us. The 2nd was 14 Minutes 11 Seconds, but the first one was an amazing
