Friendly Match Away v Brean.

Thursday 27th July

Match Captain Dave Asquith reported that we had a good stuffing away to Brean today, but it was as enjoyable as a stuffing can be.

For the record we went down 5 - 1, with the only winners being Chris Gingell and Derek Gardener  who won 1 up. Roger Davis undertook the “walk of shame” and collected the match fees.

Thanks to all the guys who played on a tough track with inclement weather.

On Monday, however, - Match Captain Roger Williams led his team to a 4.5 to 1.5 Win over Taunton & Pick yer Ridge.

Jubilee Salver

Great day as Richard completed his latest challenge. My mind was made up when I heard Richard recounting the finally days of his Father as he was ravaged by this horrible disease. Generally considered one of the hardest ailments for sufferers to handle, as their brains remain razor-sharp but the activated neurons that move muscles gradually fade. and die.  I hope he doesn't mind me repeating this, but Richard told us of the final few days, as his Father requested to spend them at home. When being advised against this by the Hospice Staff, he just looked up and said " well just give me an injection right now"

Richard asked us to thank Sir Clive for his amazing efforts in extracting hard cash from all the Seniors and Eggs.

Clive Adds :

John, nice to see Fred Oliver drive all the way from Lyme to CST just to give me a donation!

He also had a brand new CST polo  shirt which he asked me to auction and add that to the funds.

As soon as I told Alan Davis, he said I’ll have it, so the bidding only got to £20!

In addition to Richard’s £550 plus , I’ve now got £630, half paid half pledged!

I think Richard and I are now in a race to see who collects the most!

Cheers

 Clive

Special Message to Norman Markby ....Tribute to Des Denning can be found further down in the Blog but please don't feel under any obligation to read it, something we just knocked up over a cup of tea !

Sunday 23rd July 2023

Now we know many of you are already helping Richard with his 300 Holes in July efforts.

He set a modest target to raise £180 for Motor Neurone - which sadly affected his own  Father.

Well he has already "Smashed it"

raising 240% 257% 290% of his total

We're gonna need a bigger Tin !!!
currently standing at £434 £464  £524 On-Line..but with even more dropping into his cash tin daily

( Clive's collected/ pledged Money not included in above total yet)

Clive reports he has hit £500 with his efforts yesterday, but being caution as afeared of any 'Double Reporting' with Richard...watch this space

Anyway, Sir Clive has stepped in to help with an amazing offer.

I’ve volunteered to get pledges for Richard’s MND CHARITY FUND RAISING.

I know you all do a lot, this is just another important one.

I’m asking for a pledge of £10 or more from members.

If you can let me know, all I want at this stage is a pledge.

£500 Monkey
Clive adds - I have set a pretty high target to achieve and so far have pledges to £200.

This has been smashed this morning, passing £300 so Clive has raised the Bar

 - now aiming  for ....A Monkey

All those who donate will go into a draw. A £10 pledge gets you 1 ticket £20 you get 2 tickets and so on. The winning draw is lunch for 2 at Hugh Furnleigh Whittingstall’s River Cottage HQ, fantastic food and views. It’s at Trinity Hill between Axminster and Lyme.

Wow- pouring in this morning via link and WhatsApp - Thanks to Jeremy, James, Ray, Mike, Dennis, David , Edmondo, Derek, Neil - keep em coming...

In our life-times we have seen massive improvements in treatments for  illnesses that probably killed our Parents, Grandparents etc,

Prostate Cancer - now 97% Successful; Recent news on slowing down Dementia;  Parkinson's that is attacking a current member; Cancer Treatments that you will hear about every day if you attend Roll-Up - it is lurking there for us all.

Hopefully MND can achieve a similar breakthrough sometime soon.

MND is the short term for motor neurone disease, which affects the nerves known as motor neurones. These nerves are found in the brain and spinal cord and they help tell your muscles what to do

Farewell to Desmond Melvyn Denning

Sorry about strange headline, but that's kinda how it felt as the story of Des's Life was celebrated at a Musical farewell in Taunton Crematorium yesterday - not much religion about !

The coffin was as pictured and the theme was all about Family and the part Music played in his life.

A true local man, never strayed very far and this was reflected in a pretty full Chapel, with over 100 in attendance.  Nick Hill & JKP looked to be the only 2 from CST attending - but we did spot Jan & Mike Wilkes plus Mike Banfield - who would have known Des from the Windwhistle Days.

Learned all about his early life and decision to attend Yeovil College where he trained as a Carpenter. Set up a Company with his Brother called Ideal Windows where he was considered an excellent Tradesman and very fair employer. Mike Banfield also worked with him for a few years.  Always involve in the local musical scene and formed 2 Pop Groups - but always happy the play guitar and entertain on his many Family gatherings or at Ilminster Youth Club.

Played Football for Coombe St Nicholas.

Met Celia when they were in their teens and Married in 1966.

Big Family soon ensued, all of whom wrote a "Love Letter to Des" which was read out by the Celebrant Helen Salway-Roberts.  Sons  Andrew & Chris; Partners  Nicole &  Tracey and grandson Oliver to name but a few.

2nd from Left - Des on Guitar
At Blackdown View in the late 50’s there were loads of skiffle groups and budding superstars!!
Forget all that Britain’s Got Talent Got The Voice and anything similar this was the real thing!!
There was the East Boys The Eaglets and the Fabulous Pile Sisters or a combination of all of us and transfers were rife with very small transfer fees!!
Originally this was the Peanuts but reformed with Colin Green to become The Rebels a cross between Skiffle and Rock n Roll !!
This very rare photo take outside Barry Wellman house no 123 BDV from memory!!!
Des Denning Barry Wellman Colin Green Barry Wellman and David Illingworth about 1956 I reckon?

A real Supergroup at that time!!!

Now this is just a personal reflection, but I had the feeling that his time at CST was pushed into the background and did not even get a mention. Just Windwhistle & Lyme Regis - quite a few wearing Lyme Golf ties were in attendance. I had heard Celia was not best pleased about lack of concern & contact from us during Des's long period of Illness - and I'm just as guilty as everyone else.  No pictures of his time at CST were shown in the collage, just Lyme.

Lots of stories about Golfing Outings with Lyme and fun & frolics. One story of a trip involving a stop at a pub where a nearby cottage was being re-thatched. Time to leave and Des couldn't locate his car..until he spotted it buried under a mound of straw !

As you have seen already in the Blog, he often featured in the Blog with daft pictures, very handy golfer. He left Windwhistle in the 1980's after a fallout with owner Len Fisher - as he was about to become captain - so joined Lyme Regis where he shone for a few years.

As usual we learned much about this lovely Man ( always smiling & never too serious although playing off Single Figures) - all too late . As we left the Crem the song "Always look on the Bright Side of Life" was playing . Nick & I didn't feel  it was right to join the wake at the Lord Leaze - in case we caused any issues, so quietly left for the drive back home, reflecting on how we can better look after our aging and infirm Seniors - but maybe 'twas ever thus.

Thanks to Nick for his company.

We'll think about you Des, every time we pass that sign hanging on the 19th.
Condolences to Celia and the Family, sorry we didn't do a little better.
