Mates Day & Goodbye to Mates Day

Modest crowd gathered at Taunton to say farewell to Keith:- Mike Hone, Bill Hilson, JKP, Mick & Marie Aldridge, Bernie & Madeline Skeels, Stu Pope, Alan Chance, George Willerton, Bert Robinson, Ian Fielder, Dickie Hall, Trevor & Sandra Dobson, John & Ruth Wallis, Lyndsey Gage, Vic Gane, Brian Marsh, then later Ron & Linda Sutherland plus Dave Blissett and quite a few Golfers from Vivary. We probably out numbered the Family and would have been many more apart from the clash with Mates Day, I know the Captain Barrie was keen to attend.

In a non-religious ceremony, we learned so much more about Keith and his Family.

Born up in London in 1935 but by the age of 4 he was adopted, just as the War was in full swing.

Not much is known about those early days around Leatherhead with his Brother & Sister. Married his 1^st Wife Barbara and after the birth of Son Nigel, looked to move to the SW to be able to buy a property. So they landed in Penny’s Mead in Ilton, where 2^nd Son Alan was born – both were at the Funeral & CST afterwards.

Keith & Barbara were divorced in the late 60’s but at a Valentine’s ball in the 70’s he met Catherine and her 4 ‘ready-made’ Family of 4. So now they were the fearful 6 and would appear to have had a great life with Keith being the Perfect father to them all.  4 Grandchildren , 6 Great Grandchildren and the Family kept expanding.

Lots of Holidays and Family Outings as Keith pursued his career as a maintenance engineer in many local companies – where he first met John & Ruth Wallis.

Now in Chard on the Halcombe Estate and indulging in all his great loves, Crossword Puzzles, Eating & Growing Tomatoes – always scoffed by the kids. He was an award-winning hanging-basket enthusiast and often one ‘best-in-street’ rosettes.

..but one thing the Family all said was that he lived for his Golf and playing with the Seniors.

                            Seniors Invitation Day 07/08/2018

Only 28 seniors played today, which was about 18 down on last year, we have discussed it as to why, is it the cost, is £16 a head a lot for a bacon bap + coffee on arrival plus a one course meal afterwards, should we charge more for visitors & less for home players, do our members feel they have to pay for their guest making it £32 for the home player to cough up then don’t get the chance to play at the visitors club,  Peter or myself would welcome any comments to attract more players.    

We did have some good comments from our visitors re the course & the food, & they would like to come back again, indeed we did manage to hand out some forms for our Open next month. Whilst on that subject our 3-man Scramble Open on September 5^th is only a month away, so come on guys we want more of you entering our last Open of the year, it is on the notice board as well as on Golf Empire, and remember we are doing it ourselves again, so the seniors section does benefit more from this now.

In Memory of Keith Potter. Keith was Cremated today at Taunton Crematorium, followed by the wake at CST GC. I did have a chat with one of the sons and a daughter and handed them a card from the seniors section, I know John has covered it well on the blog already.
