30 March 2016

Wednesday 30th March

Probably the official start to the season as first two Matches were cancelled, but Axe Cliff got underway in bright sunshine with the captain leading a pretty strong looking Team. Steady play was underway until the shout was heard for a 'Hole in One' as one of the opposition sunk his tee-shot on the 98 yard Par 3 11th hole. He generously put a bottle of wine on every table. Not sure if the captain will report later, but Farmer Bob with Lyndsey managed a win, as did Alan (sick-bed) Chance with Barry Singleton, the rest of us suffered losses of various degrees so 2-4 was the result. Farmer Bob also got NTP on 7th although Stuart had to note on the sheet that his ball went through the green.

The results were a follows :

Nick Hill and Stuart Pope lost to Graham and Mant 5 and 4

Roger Stone and Keith Branchflower lost to Hornsby and Polley 2 up

Bob Barrow and Lyndsey Gage won by 2 holes against Cox and Bruce

Alan Chance and Bary Singleton won by 1 hole against Cook and Backhouse

Mike Hone and Bryan Frost lost to Grove and Ashbolt 5 and 4

John Pearce and Nobby Hodder lost to Alan Morgan and Leighton Morgan 2 up

Roger Stone and Keith Branchflower who lost by 2 holes were particularly unfortunate to come up against a pair who scored a hole in one and a birdie two on the last hole.

Pretty healthy Roll-Up with 6 early and 21 late and Bob Dennett & John Chance making welcome re-appearances.
Some pretty mean looking teams on display, such as White, Forster & Hunt - but it was Mr. Hunt's drive on the first that was taken on merit.

We always welcome pics & items from anyone and this one from JC describes his own round as he introduces his sore hands back to the rigours of golf.

I had an awesome experience today, playing with two noble practitioners of the art of golf; both greats with the horse, one over the wooden one, and one over the live one. Today their exploits were incredible, and I will draw to your attention just one shot of many, which was music to behold.
After a towering 7 iron, you will see in the attached picture, Mr James Dick ramming home his putt on the 10th hole for a par four; oh to be of that ability!

The only dark spot in our incredible round, was the reluctance of our self-appointed Captain, who I cannot name, but you will see holding the flag, and is of the jumping over the sticks variety, was his refusal to pick his team’s balls out of the wet holes.

Top Three Teams shot under Par Gross, but 32 out & 32 back by Rod Stevens & co left the rest behind. Half the holes were completed in '3' and not a bogey in sight.
Just Two '2's' shared the £13.50 pot and each Member gets £2.

No mention of Handicap Cuts, but unless this is corrected, assume 2 for winners and 1 for 2nd as usual.

Two '2' s from White  & Denning  Group £2 each.

Greenkeepers tidying up on 6th.
The Tree that we mentioned on Monday 'nearby' Norman's House actually took out his phone line, so came pretty close.

We saw Pete Spencer-Farr down at Axe-Cliff playing with Jan as he says it's the only place he's safe from the Web-Site !

Captain has put Team Entry Sheets on Notice Board for Wheathill, Sidmouth & Rushmore - so get your names up there if you want to be considered for selection.

Also need to make sure you are on Sheets for Qualifier on Monday 4th April - do via Pro Shop if you want a slot as draw has been made.

Axe-Cliff told us of a new game they play at Roll-Up which Bryan has named 'A Maverick'.
Before the Draw someone has been around all 18 holes with either Jacks, Queens or Kings, plus a couple of 'Jokers'.  As you arrive on each Green, you then find out how many scores have to count. If there is a Jack, then just 1 score counts, a Queen signifies 2 Scores and a King tells you that you must count all 3 scores. If a Joker is present alongside the other card, then score is doubled.
