Challenge Cup Round 1 Minehead – 23rd March 2016

From Stay-at-home Keith

The majority of seniors were at the seaside playing the 1st round of the Challenge cup at Minehead.  The stay-at-homers met at the club and with eight turning up it was decided to play two teams of four with the best two scores to count.  The draw was made and the teams were: Dobson, Hodder, Hunt and new member John Bloys against Morfitt, Gane, Teasdale and Branchflower.
Bim had regaled the gathering with stories about his dirty-weekend in London, his dismal service at the Travel Inn, which he left and his freebies at the Hilton after ripping a strip off most of the Staff. Lesson being that Miserable Barst**ds are Winners in London !

The Dobson team scored a birdie on the 4th and returned a total of 88 points, Morfitt’s team also scored 88 but had birdies on the 2nd and 18th, an honourable draw.  It was decided not to pay any prize money but to put it into the Captains Charity fund. KB (Treas)

From Skipper
A great day was had by 45 members of Cricket St Thomas Seniors at Minehead today. The first 9 holes were mainly downwind and coming back was mostly into the wind which started to blow a little stronger as the day progressed. Greens were super quick compared with CST, but that didn’t put off our star players who all returned scores of more than 30 points.

The first three places received vouchers for our Pro Shop.

Longest Drive       - Mike King

NTP (4th hole)       - Richard Hall

NTP (14th hole0    - John Pearce

The day was well organised by Norman Markby who presented the prizes.

..and unlucky JKP who made 31 and leaves with nothing...

Maybe it's just me (JKP) - but felt with so many players and 2 hours of Tee-Times it was all a little flat as we staggered in around 17:00 and most had already gone home - some were in before 15:00 !
If Fields are going to be so large, I thing we should maybe consider Top 20 , which is still less than 50% of field, should earn points. as it was today, 35 people (77%) left with nothing after a pretty tough day in a very chilly wind. We could maybe ask Clubs for possibility of a split-start, alternating on 10th with Players already on Course. Would 4-Balls compact the field a little ?
Great Job by Norman who I'm sure would appreciate a 'Sidekick' whilst Mike Light is still out of action, having his Gall Bladder removed this very day.
