Captain's Bowel Cancer Charity Day
Thursday 5th May 2022

Early Leader Board shows Mark Cording's CST 2 Team with an impressive early lead..although the Mathematicians among you may spot reasons not to get too carried away....

Quinny & John..another 10 Hour Shift..checking In, Checking Cards, Chasing Money, The Engine Room of the Day

Our reliable ladies always smiling serving the Seniors at the Charity Day event  and it was only 07:00

Thank You for all the Raffle Prizes and of course for buying Tickers - expecvted to make over £600 on the Raffle Alone.

Dave & June on Duty as Starters.....Yes we know Stuart is late Dave...tell is something new..but their efforts were much appreciated - considering Dave was bedbound the day before.

Plenty of Prizes on Offer....I expect mine are in the post !!!

Whole Course was stunning and perfect weather.

Didn't get a Picture of the halfway House but thank you for all those Cakes and other contributions. Also to Donna & Liz for the early shift and the Ladies that replaced them at 13:00

One of many very generous sponsorships who were featured on every Tee - well done to you all  must have raised close to £1000..fingers crossed........

Captain had been very busy personalizing every Sponsors Board - well done to everyone that participated..we'll attach a full list later.

and then there was a 3-Course Dinner - beautifully presented by the catering team, led by Tim.
Peter was so hungry he started to eat the Flowers !

It's just a pity we lost the Marquee and the old 'Shotgun Start' and Presentation Dinner can no longer be held.   Most people will have left by the time the last group sit down for dinner.

Sunday May1st

From Sir Alex of Hill:- We hope you are well and enjoying your week.

As you may be aware already, today is Stefan's last shift here at CST before he starts his new job at Bridport Golf Club next week. We wish him the best of luck with the next step in his career.

We also said goodbye to Roy Holland last week and wish him the best of luck in his new teaching professional role at Windmill Leisure in Bristol.

And of course, Helen departed last week as well, and we will all miss her bubbly smile and attitude behind the bar!

We would like to thank you all for your hard work, from all the staff and members here at the club. You will all be missed greatly and will all be welcome back for a drink and some golf whenever you please.

FINALLY...If you didn't already know, Helen and Katie are taking part in a sky dive on 14th May for Axminster and Lyme Cancer Support. They are 75% of the way there to reaching their fundraising target! If anybody wants to donate, please                 CLICK HERE.

They are just £150 short of their £2000 Target.

If you are not playing Thursday, not baking a cake or bringing a Raffle Prize - please give this your kind consideration - no need to Register at the end, just put name in and then "Continue without Registering" - you can use paypal if your don't want to use your Card Number.

I'll even do it for you if you just want to  give us cash up at the Club - but even easier you can do it behind the Bar off your account..modern technology makes it much easier to become penniless these days...come on..just £150 more for all those lovely smiles we get from the Girls in the 19th

We hope you have a great bank holiday weekend.

Kind Regards,

Alex Hill

General Manager

Still could use 3 more players to make our 3rd team of 8 - see Captain's Charity pages.

JKP Bids £69.95 ..any advance ?

Dickie did his Monthly Draw with Martin Leigh winning the Hamper and Keith Hunt / memory blank taking the wine & the Chocolates..Captain reminded us about Raffle Prizes for Thursday 5th and of course most important - some of those lovely Cakes & treats for our famous half-way House..so thanks to our lovely Lady bakers in advance...Tee Times will be out shortly for Thurs - starts from 06:45 so please allocate all day for your participation with superb dinner afterwards..couple of extras for ball spotting would be much appreciated...

From John Pearce - who was called away Friday to rush Wife Diana to Hospital, so apologies to Martyn for leaving him in the lurch.
For some Months now, Di's eyesight has been deteriorating as her replacement eye lenses clouded over , a common occurrence after Glaucoma/ cataracts etc. After 2 years of delay from NHS we decided to go Private & spend a 4 figure sum to get them cleaned out by a fairly simple Laser Treatment, lasting 10 Minutes.
As usual we were stuck in a 'not my job' loop - looking for correct referrals, diagnoses, appointments etc  - so Di phoned Specsavers to try and get a proper referral to Nuffield. Got appointment for next day, so was in there Thursday where a lovely Optician examined her eyes and expressed concern that her left eye may have a detaching Retina and raised his concern with Taunton.
So Friday arrived and panic calls from Taunton to attend Emergency Eye-Clinic ...but of course Hubby was playing Golf and phone was switched to silent.
As we strode down the 1st ( started 16th) - Penny came down the Fairway in a Buggy and told JKP to get home asap... it was 10:00 and I had to get Diana to Musgrove by 11:00.
We arrived in time ( just) and another lovely Doctor ( Mustaffa) - said Retina was not too bad but needed a repair ( planned for a Month's time) - but 'If we wanted' he would pop next-door and carry out the Laser zapping of the Right Eye straight away.

So after 15 Minutes of clicking and zapping, Doc had blasted away all the offending debris behind the new Lens and sent us home.

As we drove home rather stunned that such a simple procedure would have taken us another year or so to get by other means...was all over & done so quickly.

Obviously her eyes will take some time to settle after all the drops and interventions - but even on the drive home she was saying " I can see that Road Sign " ..or "Clear Left" ....as I wrote to the family..
Diana was Dilated AND Delighted.

Thanks for the calls & messages and I'll take a box of Chocolates up for Nurse MoneyPenny..and buy Martyn a Coffee.

Since then I've been playing with my Mobile - I think there is a way to have phone on 'Silence' but allow a 'Favourite' number to still get through...

..so I'll increase my bid for the Henry to £75.43 ....

Friday 29th April 2022

Wednesday 27th April 2022
Medal Qualifier

Firstly, thanks for all extra names on May 5th Charity and Long Sutton Team

Congrats to CST Teams that visited Sidmouth 4BBB Open on Monday and came away with the Silverware.

David & James pictures with the Visitors Plate

Jim has shed a few pounds lately and the Asquith / Lauchlan pairing amassed  43 Points..with a staggering 27 point back 9 which raised a few eyebrows...and earned them a hatful of Vouchers.

Chris G and Terry R scored 40
James Siabi & Roger Hinds 33

Big Upset in the Summer KO. All Results are being entered ON-LINE on the Club Computer and can be seen in the Competitions Section as below

Eric took out the captain, but faces Mark in Round2
As above, Roger took our newly married Richard
Stuart Pope, Danny and James P also progress

Just hours later, Eric was back in the Pairs KO with Sweetie..where they took out the fancied Saunders & Marsh

Captain still in shock. He was walking up 18th Hole in prime position, Eric was way-right on 5th Fairway.   Suddenly from Dave's right a ball appeared, bounced on the hump of the greenside bunker..onto the Green and followed the contours towards the pin.....allowing Eric to pat the hole, with a shot of course and progress to Round 2.

Captain took a strong Team to Weymouth on Tuesday but as usual, found it tough to steal many points and went down 1 -5 with Mark Cording and the Chicken Farmer being the only winners. Great Day Out for £10 and Mediterranean Lamb Pie.  Heard accounts of dress code enforcements..with black socks being frowned upon.

Please take note those that have signed up for Long Sutton May 12th - there is a Somerset Bowl Match that clashes, so the Captain will be prioritizing that Comp over the Friendly - so more names please so Chris Gingell can field a team to Long Sutton.

Monday 25th April

Big Push for Captain's Charity Day Thursday 5th May

Last opportunity in the Sponsor a Hole for the Captains Charity day 5th May. Sponsor £50 on your own or partner a Senior for £25.
I'm closing the bids today. Email me at: me@clivefisk.com thanks for your support.
Clive

Thank you to everyone that has stepped forward to help raise funds for Bowel CancerUK.
Special thanks to Sir Clive for driving this forward.
Your generosity has raised £1000+.
Please keep on trying for Corporate or Company Sponsorship - all the money will go to further research into this dreadful disease.
Dave Mugridge

We currently need just a few more players to allow us to field 2 full Teams of 8 - playing 4BBB.

presume Captain will pick an 'A' Team - but we need a few 'handy' Players to form the 'Gold & Bold'    'B' Team with the sole objective of beating the A Team.    Couple of lower handicappers would be nice ( jeremy/mark/roger/ian/paul/danny etc etc as the high/low pairings always seem to work best...but Bandits most welcome.
See below for more detail, it is an all day affair, but smart casual for Dinner - and they pull out all the stops for dinner - The Gold & Bold Team will have Wine at the Table and Chocolates & Coffee to finish.

Menu is as below:-

..plus extras for Gold & Bold team.

THE Harper 3-Towns Matchplay

Lost & Found on 1st Tee Ladies ball Marker, complete with Clip Celebrates Straightest Drive
Left with Matt in Pro Shop

A big thanks goes to Stuart Pope who stepped in at the very last minute to help Crewkerne to victory.

I must admit to being a convert to this 3-way Matchplay scoring system that keeps the game alive until the very last hole in some cases. Dave Asterisk won our trio with a magnificent iron to a metre from the pin on 18th...but he was always ahead as JKP and 3-Names fought to catch him up.
JKP broke hearts with a Par putt from off green on 10th - that ran across the slope and then turned left 90 Degrees to hit the flag and drop-in  at about 8 mph.

Wonder if Farmer Bob is reading this whilst sat on his Coach Trip to Lake District.

Monday 11th April

Friday 8th April

  • Nobby is out of Hospital - Collar-Bone Injury and you should see the bruising - he was in Musgrove overnight on Friday.
  • Bob Dennett is back home and recovering

  • Nick Hill is having a Hip Replacement on April 19th
  •
  • Richard Holmes is getting Married Tuesday
  •
  • Alan Davis was back with us today and sunk a 40 foot Birdie on 12th

Wednesday is the Captain's Charity Greensomes.

Thanks to everyone who contributed raffle prizes and to those who participated in this morning's Captain's Charity Canadian Greensomes.

The weather was good to us, with the final group getting slightly damp as a shower blew through as they played the 18th.

The winners were Phil Hunt and Nick Clarke, with a magnificent score of 54 pts.

You have to feel sorry for Jeremy & Brian who were 14 points behind before they even teed off, with just 19 shots compared to Phil's 33.

They pulled back 8 of them with a magnificent score of 24 out & 24 back, playing some of their best golf of the year...a Gross 77...and the only "2" of the day...

..but he did manage a smile as he walked off with a nice Litre of Bells Whisky from the raffle.

The sleeve of 3 Mizuno balls each for nearest the pin on the 9th was claimed by Normski and Dickie Hall.

The nearest the pin in 2 on the 18th was claimed by Barrie Heath and Chris Gingell.

Dickie Hall ran his usual brilliantly successful raffle,
which raised £156 towards Bowel Cancer UK. Another £60 was raised from the entry fees.

£216.00

Monday 4th March

Not sure if it is correct, but looking at Handicap Index changes from Yesterday.

All Top 5 were reduced:-
Keith Hunt  20.6 down to 20.1
Jim Lauchlan  22.3 down to 21.4
Dave Asquith  27.2 down to 26.4
Dave Mugridge   8.7 down to 8.3
Derek Gardener   21.3 down to 20.7

Friday 1st April

Phantom Pro (Andy) elevated both teams that used him- with 8 Par Holes, he added 8 points to the Gingell Group and presume similar to team Jeremy who had been the bridesmaid just about every day this week - nothing personal Jeremy, honest !

..talking about Phantom Pros...many Seniors are sad to see the loss of Roy, who has held so many of those group sessions especially for the Seniors.

We are sad to announce that our PGA Professional Roy Holland’s last day of coaching at Cricket St Thomas Golf Club will be Friday 22nd April.

Please ensure you contact Roy directly regarding any outstanding lessons as Roy is retained on a self-employed basis only and the golf club takes no liability for incomplete packages. Roy’s contact is royholland@gmail.com.

We thank Roy for his service and all of his help over the last 3 years and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

Thursday Update

March raffle - Dickie Hall drew the Numbers today with another 3 figures raised for Bowel Cancer UK

  • 121 - Richard Holmes - Litre Bells Whisky
  • 211 - Dennis Hussey - Litre Vintage Port
  • 250 - Brian Marsh - Tin Sweets
Bob Dennett

Still in Hospital on Oxygen and  a new course of Anti-Biotics - hoping for some improvement tomorrow.

Sounded quite chirpy when chatting with Captain, can't wait to get onto a nice warm Golf Course.

Update on Nobby Hodder

Took his shot on 14th fairway as Chris G & JKP strolled ahead. Looked behind and expected to see him appearing over the horizon in his Club Buggy.  Walked back up to find him sprawled half-in / half-out of the buggy and immobile.  Got him to seated position in the buggy after a few cries of pain as we man-handled him.

He claims he had a dizzy outage as he turned back from his shot and clattered the buggy with his shoulder as he fell to the ground. He wouldn't be driven back to Clubhouse, so we wrapped him up well and Chris took over the driving,

May well have dislocated his shoulder as it was giving him gyp - left him in the Clubhouse for CST Staff to see him safely home. Apparently he had a similar spell on Wednesday - so there is a problem that needs resolving by the look of it.

Fish & Chip Supper

On Wednesday evening, about 40 members of the Ladies & Seniors Sections, along with partners attended a Fish & Chip Social evening, held in Horizons at CSTGC.

It proved to be a very successful evening with excellent Fish, Chips & per, along with Tartare and Curry sauces. The proof of the quality and taste of the food was the cleanliness of the plates at the end of the meal.

Dickie Hall ran a raffle and the Captain ran a quiz, which proved a little too difficult for most. The winners of the quiz were Mark & Jean Cording, who went home with a bottle of Red wine and a bottle of white wine, as well as the basket of fruit from the raffle.

Feedback (pun intended) was good and it is planned to hold similar evening at about 2 monthly intervals, across the Summer.

Seniors Captain

Next event already on NB- with further options added -

Match report, Friendly away at Wheathill.

A team of intrepid golfers from CST took on their counterparts at Wheathill on Thursday. The weather was very cold, with a strong (2-3 club)`northerly wind blowing throughout. There were occasional snow flurries to liven up the proceedings and keep play brisk..

It was their last day with winter rules, so playing the course over the next few weeks will prove challenging, as growth is irregular in some areas.

The food dished up by Vicky was, as usual, excellent - a very tasty Chicken & Ham pie, with plenty of roast New Potatoes and vegetables, followed by the choice of 3 puddings.

Sadly, one team member had not noted the time or date of the fixture, so Steve Holt took on a better ball pair alone. As he said at the end of his match, “I lost the first 3 and it didn’t get any better…”

The winning CST teams were Mark Cording & Edmondo Paoloni and Keith Hunt & Dave Mugridge. Roger Hinds and Stuart Pope halved their match, coming back from 4 down.

Result:  CST 2½ - 3½ Wheathill

 Dave Mugridge

Seniors Captain

Wednesday 30th March

Farmer Bob  -back as team manager...determined to get the Drives in early...

Even Bob the Builder was impressed with speed of play today - with rounds completed in around 3 1/2 Hours..

Mike Hone had just 1 inch to go for their  Eagle 2 on 17th....but Bogeying 1,6 & 10 meant that even this came a little too, late.

Morning Alex

Bobby Dennett has been struggling with Covid for the last two weeks until eventually he was taken into hospital yesterday in a pretty bad way.

He can't have visits, but he does have his phone for texts, WhatsApp etc.  I don't know his buddies at the golf club in the seniors and Avalon League these days but if you could pass on to who you think might want to send him a message.  Anything might help right now.  He probably wouldn't respond but that doesn't matter.

 Thanks Alex

 Brian Severn

Announcement made at Roll-Up that Seniors will no longer be allocated Tee-Times on Bank Holidays - which will affect Friday  15th & Monday 18th April initially - so you can get in early to reserve a Tee-Time from Friday Morning if you wish.

We have seen this before in the Seniors, but in truth there is never a sudden influx of Members booking those Tee-Times as people don't necessarily take Bank Holidays off any more.  All they end up with is a deserted Clubhouse and Golf Course...so let's see how this develops.

Wednesdays competition has been changed to a 3 man Scramble (Medal) 5 drives each due to the 18 temporary greens.

Monday 28th March

Friday 25th March

Just ordered a free lateral flow test ( box of 7)  from Gov Website - get in quick as they won't be free for much longer.

I would advise all Seniors to request an at home “poo test”. Once you’re over 75 you don’t get one unless you ask for one .

FROM THE NHS

If you're 75 or over, you can ask for a kit every 2 years by phoning the free Bowel Cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 60 60.

Good score from Terry & Chris who carded 40 Points

Strange looks from Terry, Chris, Andy & Chris as Farmer Bob takes a 3-Rescue Club for his next shot.....but he was not heading  for the nearby pin but for one 200 yards South on 18th Green after his Partner was rather errant from the 18th Tee - name withheld for Security Reasons....

Peter splashes out on 8th with 3rd shot enabling partner Martyn to make a 6 for 1..
but Peter had other things on his mind such as his Mum's 94th Birthday Party this evening.
Mrs Pat Spender-Farr- Moore lives just down the road in Broadwindsor so the whole Village
will be whooping it up no doubt...until 19:00 anyway.. when Emmerdale comes on...

Feisty Ian & Jim on 1st Tee..where Ian hit a lovely tee shot down the middle.....
moments later Ian was in action again playing their 4th shot as Jim's opening effort was never to be seen again.....and 8 on 1st and 4th  meant this was one trophy that was not heading over the hill to Collumpton..or even further to Colluden....

Wednesday 23rd March

Welcome back Phil- we've missed that smile.

Narrowly missed winning Div3 yesterday with a Gross 60,,well on the first 7 holes anyway.   Keep trying Phil..meantime many of us are heading upwards to meet you one day...

Ive been asked to remind all players that when a ball that is lost, or is out of bounds. You must replay the shot and add a one stroke penalty.
The local rule on the card that allows you to drop a ball at the point where the ball is lost only applies in casual play and not in any competitions.

Knighton Heath Team posted in Inter Club Matches

I telephoned today (119) and getting the 4th Jab tomorrow at Beaminster thought perhaps seniors would like to know that it is now available

Friday 18th March 2022
Mark Cording with a superb 23 points on the back nine secures the win on count back

Wednesday 16th March 2022

It never happened as course was fogbound all day..and if it started to lift it started to rain..earlies hung around until 09:00 so Captain drew the raffle.

It was funny as Prizes were picked out by winners and everyone ignored the "Fish & Chips for 2" Vouchers, preferring the Mateus Rose and Liebfraumilch etc..until Barry had the last  Prize and had little option. He was rather pleased when he opened up the 'Voucher' envelope to find it contained £30.00 cash to pay for his Meal & Drinks on Wed 30th....

Captain's Charity Greensomes, Wednesday 16th March.

Monday 14th March 2022

Covid Update:- We have to report that Jolly Roger and peter 3-Names have fallen to the pandemic and are isolating at home. Neither say they contacted it up at the Club and they were due to external activities - both are doing well at this time we believe,.

Hi John just thought I would let you know, I would have been back playing, but I had a slip down the bottom three stairs at home, no I had not had a drink, happened about 4.30 PM before I went out, really sore knee, so would not be able to swing a club at the moment. Hoping to pop up to club on Weds or Fri this week, even if only to pay my seniors subs, hope to see you then. Happy to play off 8 Handicap as before until I get back up to speed.

All the best Bim.

We will be playing  away to Yeovil in 1st round of the KHKO on 24th March, with a 1st tee off time around midday.

Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Mushrooms, Tomatoes, Hash Brown , Baked Beans and lashings of toast & butter... something it would be good for main peloton of Seniors to do sometime.

Standing proud Steve Atyeo  & his trio who won the Trophy and a nice brown envelope.

The 'Ringers' team - Pearce/Markby/Trott came firmly last with 67 !

Steve. Malcolm & J-Mac were nearer 60 !

Welcome to Kevin Rosenberg - new to Seniors but been out a few times with Ian H and others.
Yes Keith, Chris G extracted £3 at 08:15 and posted in letter box.

Can I exchange Mr Pearce for the Phantom Pro  ? .....Normski looking gloomy on 8th after a 'modest start' but minutes later he was much happier after making a '2' on the 9th

Usual busy interchange of 7,15.14.13 - people going everywhere.

Good Evans striding up the 3rd as Bob puts one just short of Green.
On 6th Hole JE sliced drive right and played his 2nd to new green ready for next year - Hole 7 as it will become.
He then pronounced " You know, this isn't a bad route to take for this new hole'..which should prove popular with players striding up the 17th !

Captain has posted Team & Pairings for Avalon League on NB, also taken down entry sheet for Bridport Friendly- as it had 149 Names on it....so let's see you keep it up for the year.

Wed 2nd March 2022

MARCH HARE moved to Fri 18th due to ongoing inclement conditions...

today the ground was particularly wet & slippery

Earlies went out in a single group and played an Ind Stableford
in some of the worst weather

Roger & Bob stride up 6th as weather hung on tenacitiously

Chicken Farmer was reluctant to play but picked the right trio ..they were the only ones under par gross and the only ones with birdies..so probably deserved the win...for reference, the Chicken Farmer is the one facing in the wrong direction...

good Day for Mark as he wins the Feb Draw , his new Sofa arrived and he won the Golf...

Well done to Dickie for keeping the fund-raising going as he made another £3.75 for Charity after expenses, travel & settling his Bar Bill.

Mark  C Won 1 Litre Brandy Number 211
Mart L Won the Red Wine on Number 65
Mark S won the Quality Prize on Number 71.

Captain thanks you once again for your support of his Bowel Cancer Charity

(by the way, we were joking about the £3.75 profit)

On Temps, Pedro would have  made an easy 2 on 2nd hole...

Bob's Trio were fastest around the course today, but were embargoed for Russian  and looking rather suspicious in Red..JKP was an innocent bystander...

Monday 28th February 2022

OK..discard 1st, 2nd & 3rd and we still have enough
to get ahead of that annoying 'Hunt' person....who seems to keep winning everything and The Captain who called me "2-faced"

Credit to Keith Hunt, who re-invested his vast winnings pot and treated the whole Family to an all-expenses Day Out up at CST on Sunday.

They arrived early and played the 9-hole Course and then were seated at a VIP Table in the Clubhouse where Katie & the Team looked after them .

Keith said it was all " Very Very Good " and the Family was most impressed.

They have yet to discover that the Golf was Free as part of one of Alex's half-Term Promotions  and the Kids even had a Free Carvery Dinner as part of the deal.

Granddad - You are BUSTED !!!

If I win this game Granddad, can I get at least a couple of shots on Sunday...Playing off Scratch is tantamount to Child abuse.....

CST Famous Sunday Carvery is now back on from 12:00- 15:00 on Sundays and numbers are restricted until they get back up to full speed .
Phone 30231 and get booked in or you may be too late.

Friday February 25th 2022

Busy 2-way traffic on 13th..although some on 14th..nice to see Stewart Seery back with us playing

James & Roger wait for Green to clear on 5th, whilst in the background are Farmer Bob, Jolly Roger, Ian Covid and James 'Pasty' Lauchlan - forced to walk the course.

Few 'Dream Teams' out today but none topped the leader board

Martyn chips one to 7th ..you can see ball if you look closely.  Remember clicking on any of these pictures allow you to zoom in.

Yes it was close and he made the 2...

Roger W calculates the age of fallen tree on 6th to be 47 Years old..meanwhile out of shot stands Martyn in half-teapot pose having missed to put for par.
Seemed to be an unwritten law today - if a putt is heading for the pin,  it will miss as they all seemed to veer off when within 6 inches...

Just liked the shadows on 15th - no real reason for it..except maybe to mention that this was where Steve & Bob D managed a big fat ZERO !!!

Well Done Barrie, Richard and Martyn, you were too good for us all this year

Good defence from Champions Pope/Chance/Evans but the 11 Points they were behind after 1st Round were never recovered.
